this was so funny but at the same time so fucking surreal because until this movie, I don’t think I’d ever seen nostalgia-based humor aimed squarely at me. 1980s nostalgia is all over the place but that’s before my time, and I guess we’re just now getting to the point where 1990s nostalgia can be a thing, and it’s just like…it was funny! I loved it! and also it was fucking weird and I felt very old thinking about how many kids were seeing this movie and not quite getting what was so funny about Windows 95 chugging away at a file or taking forever to connect to the internet (with a dial-up modem, in a fucking internet cafe).

I was there when this happened. My gf and I were helping a group hand out free food and water by the entrance when we saw them across the street. They crossed the street, passed by the gate and us, and kept going, waving their swastika proudly.

They were surrounded by cops. People were shouting and shoving and the cops were pushing everyone back. I shouted at a cop and he looked right at me and said “They have the same rights as you do.”

According to people that followed them, someone threw a water bottle at the nazis and was quickly swarmed by cops.

As people were walking up to the gates, I shouted to be careful, as there were nazis nearby being protected by the cops. A cop that was close by directing traffic was getting real upset with me, so I moved down a ways so he couldn’t hear me.

This is why cops don’t belong at Pride. They don’t protect us, they protect the ones that want us dead.

being gay has changed almost all of my/my friends interactions with the rest of society so PLEASE stop saying it “makes you no different” and “it doesn’t affect you” and “everyone is the same”. this is a childish, ineffective way to address internalized homophobia.

your intentions are good, but you’re erasing years of trauma, abuse and isolation within gay populations caused by homophobic violence.

closeted or not, every gay person has had their interactions with others shaped by fear of homophobic retaliation. it’s not as simple as “they like the same sex”. it’s cultural. it’s beaten into us from reading age to reject “gayness” and femininity.

gay people do act differently from straight people, not because they are gay, but because they are raised in a society that rejects them, even before they know they’re different.
