Laura Lee knows that her hair had lost its shine (just as van had complimented her during the party) and her face looked duller when paired with her sunken eyes. The combination of the harsh lake water and lack of nutrients had already done its damage. It doesn’t bother her that much. Except when Lottie stares at her intently—like she’s always observing Laura Lee. Like she wants to absorb everything she can about her. She thinks that it really shouldn’t matter. She and Lottie had only looked at each other before the crash during practices.
She doesn’t think she was a particularly pretty sight then. Her hair, although shinier than it is now, had always been drenched in sweat. Her cheeks were often flushed with patchy spots of red, and her clothes were in disarray. Girls like Lottie survived practice like it was nothing—her face remained clean, and her curly hair defied the atmosphere every single time. Really, it shouldn’t matter if Lottie had started staring at her longer and smiling at her while she does so, except it does. Laura Lee is shaken with the urge to hide and escape or at least do something to flatten out the frizz in her hair. It matters so much to Laura Lee because how can she know if Lottie liked what she saw.
She really shouldn’t have worried. After all, as Lottie is about to die, she pictures Laura Lee with her shiny hair adorned with a black headband. Her cheeks are full and rosy in Lottie’s dreams; it always gives her the urge to reach out and touch her, hoping to feel that it’s warm—that it’s real.
Laura Lee might have not considered herself a sight to behold, but it’s her beautiful face that Lottie wishes to see every single day. So much so that she had been willing to give her life up just to see her again.
