our house was in the middle of nowhere surrounded by woods so when i decided i didnt want to wear dresses anymore if we were going to some event & my parents insisted i had to wear a dress i would just go hide in the woods. was so committed i almost made us miss a flight once bc my mom packed a dress in my suitcase

5th grade was the last time I wore a dress for school pictures. When my parents attempted to force the issue for 6th grade, I climbed onto our roof and pulled the ladder up after me. My dad borrowed the neighbors ladder. As soon as it touched the roof I pulled it up too. By the time I had 3 ladders they were willing to negotiate, and 2 hours late for work.

i really really loved how the supergirl 2026 movie subverted the 'if you kill them ur no better then them' trope, i loved that the conflict was not that he doesnt deserve to die but rather that ruthye deserves to not have to kill him, that she is just a child and should not have to carry that burden along with everything she had already been through. i really loved how kara killing him recontextulizes her actions leading up to that moment, how it becomes clear that it was never her intention to let him live, but to keep ruthye safely away from the fight.

ive always disliked the anti revenge narrative because sometime people do just do things that are unforgivable and wont be stopped by the current system, but here kara never said ruthye should forgive him, but rather that ruthye deserved to live on and it is made far more impactfull by the fact that it is in the same fight where kara accepts the suit and truly becomes supergirl. superman is the shield, supergirl is the sword, supergirl fights so girls like ruthye dont have to.

I think the reason the new Superman and Supergirl movies are so effective is that they're way more willing to be sincere than most mainstream superhero movies for the last decade. The MCU movies got a pretty well-deserved reputation for undercutting their dramatic moments with cheap jokes. Schneider's films always gave off the impression that they were kind of embarrassed to be superhero movies.

In contrast, James Gunn embraced the basic premise of Superman and made a movie that asked the question, "What if there was a guy who was strong, like, the strongest guy, but also, he was nice and he cared?" And it's like, oh yeah, this character rules actually, it would be really cool if there was a guy who was really strong but also nice.

Supergirl starts off her movie as kind of a wastoid who doesn't care about anything except for the never-ending party, but when her dog gets hurt, the movie is willing to say that it would suck if your dog got hurt, and they never undercut that emotional weight with a joke. The movie can be high-octane fun and have Jason Momoa show up as Lobo while still retaining that emotional core. When Supergirl ends the movie by visiting her cousin, it's like, yeah, she learned that she should treasure the things that she cares about, because her dog nearly died.

I was going to end this post by saying that every movie should have Lobo show up, but that feels like the kind of disingenuous joke that I'm criticizing superhero movies for making. I think Lobo is unironically super cool, but also, he's a galactic bounty hunter that rides a space motorcycle and looks like a member of the band Kiss. He's a ridiculous character even by the pretty ridiculous standards of superhero stories. He works in this Supergirl movie, because the movie was willing to say, "Hey, here's Lobo, he got into the space bounty hunting business after his Kiss cover band fell apart, and he represents the dark violent side of Ruthye's internal moral struggle." It ends up, this goofy character is both a good representation of that half of Ruthye's internal moral struggle and also very fun.

Superhero movies should just be okay with the fact that superheroes are a pretty juvenile concept. If you're constantly undercutting that to seem cool or making your movies super edgy and dark to seem cool, then it's going to seem juvenile. If you say "Hey, let's have a two hour adventure with my pal Superman," that ends up being pretty cool.

I’m gonna need you all to get more obsessed with Supergirl 2026. It’s literally every single sarcastic, messy, depressed, grieving, male lead from recent media that accidentally adopts an angry, young girl (also grieving) which forces him to confront his self destructive behavior and realize the impact he can still make. But she’s a girl. This is the character you all love in every piece of media. I’m begging you all to adore her the same way.
