The mental alters the physical.
Here's a little tip to those on psychiatric medications. A study was done proving treatment was much more successful when medication therapy was combined with psychotherapy. Putting our mind and attitude into the right mindset physically alters the brain...in a good way. That goes to show that mind over matter is right on track. People who are always pessimists don't achieve a great reaction from the meds. Here's something I do after a bad day. Point out one good thing from the day. There always is one. It may be a small minor thing like getting extra sprinkles on your ice cream. Something so small but yet it sets off an explosion of psychological growth. I had to learn myself that there is power in positive thinking. It can't be seen by the naked eye, but your neurons are working better.
Aware of what we need in treatment.
As a patient we must become self-aware of our needs and how to grow from treatment. We must figure out what we need out of treatment. Both with meds and psychotherapy. The first thing that must be established with your therapist and medication provider is trust. If you don't trust them, you are not going to get the treatment you need. I have had tons of providers that I didn't trust. Which did lead me to feel I needed to lie to them which of course will lead to no progress. We as mental patients fear involuntary commitment to the hospital. So, we lie in order to protect ourselves. But by lying the original promise isn't worked on. I can definitely say through experience that if you have a 2-way trusting relationship with your treatment team you won't face involuntary admission to an acute care facility. Your provider won't need to do that if they themselves can trust you and hold a rational conversation with you. The provider has to feel they can trust the patient too.
So, I'm Holden. I'm a writer as well as a student. This blog is going to be fairly specific. I have struggled with bipolar disorder and BPD since I was 15. 16 years and a lot of bad treatment later I have finally figured out what I need from my mental health providers in order to get the best treatment possible. I have already shared these views with some providers, and they agreed and managed to change some of their ways. I'm going to be sharing a few key things to enable more successful treatment. As well as sharing other things on psychology and psychoanalysis. Being a bibliophile and an art lover literature and art will make their way in. I hope I can reach a large scale with this blog. Eventually I want to lead seminars on what the provider can learn from the patient to secure the best treatment plan. Every patient should already be a self-advocate. Nothing changes if you don't stand up. I know it is easier said than done. Let the many voices of mental illness be heard. What do we need? What do we wish our medication provider or therapist would do differently? They don't know until we tell them. A group called NAMI is supposed to attempt this, but they have dwindled. I do not have a clinical psychology degree as of yet. If it called for life experience I would have it. I'm just someone with mental illness who became sick of over a decade of bad treatment and realized what needs to be done. I made this blog to share my views and hope to gradually grow larger.
