So, since we have another entry of the Yellow Wallpaper, I have decided to read what were the treatments for "hysteria" as an illness, and it's incredible... this pseudo-scientific "being a woman" illness has been mentioned since ancient egypt.

From hypnosis, straight up pregnancy, and smelling salts the treatments for this made up illness are so bonkers that all of them showcase the misogynist dismissal for women's health to either a silly mental womanly problem, or the uterus somehow going crazy. Therefore, the "treatment" showcased in the Yellow Wallpaper falls in line with the image of hysteria in the 18 to 19th century, where it was associated with the brain as a neurological illness, which in turn made neuropsychiatrists of the time order stuff like bed rest, and avoidance of activities so the brain could not be "overstimulated".

No wonder the lady protagonist is frying her mind observing the yellow wallpaper again and again, on top of hiding her writing in fear of it being taken away, there is literally nothing for her to do! To read how the protagonist is desperately trying to convince herself that all of the "treatment" imposed on her by her husband is somehow helping, then recalling how he keeps dismissing every single opinion she has, only to switch to her obsessing over the patterns on the wallpaper because she is exhausting her talking topics it's really melancholic.

President Mahama has said he must scrutinise it before signing it, which would make it law. But the pressure that's been placed has already caused sentences to be reduced and exemptions to be made comparatively to previous versions. More pressure is important even if this latest update was made because of the way the President, facing much pressure, has assented. The last time a similar bill was passed it did not end up getting signed (by Ghana's last president President Nana Akufo-Addo), so this pressure is definitely not meaningless or without hope.

This is why it is so crucial not to be silent about this. This version is better than the prior one even if it's still devastating and must not be passed. Pressure about human rights violations is not meaningless.

Oh, it’s even better than that.

What happened was the lease to The Theatre (actual name) was coming to an end, and the asshole landlord Giles Allen refused to extend it. He even tried to argue that since he owned the land, he also owned The Theatre itself (see: asshole).

So the Burbages and/or Shakespeare came up with a very clever solution: While they did not own the land The Theatre was on, they did in fact own The Theatre itself. So they hired people to dismantle The Theatre in Shoreditch on the sly and take the pieces to set up a new one in Southwark.

The plan was successful, and they reconstructed their new playhouse by the summer of 1599: The Globe, now famous for being the home of Shakespeare’s later plays, from Henry V or Julius Caesar on.

Definitely one of the most badass moments in Shakespeare’s actual life.

I also think that the strength gap is at least partially manufactured women would in fact be stronger overall if little girls were encouraged to do physically taxing games and activities and eat their fill while they’re growing vs having to constantly diet and be sedentary indoors (or god forbid do intense cardio while under-eating). The amount of adult women honestly afraid to lift weights bc they think they’ll get bulky as though bulking isn’t a full time job that athletes have to spend all their time on and anyone on earth gets shredded from just using their adult muscles for their intended purpose, girl your bone density 🥀

if you say women are intentionally nerfed from birth in 2026 people look at you like you’re insane and start condescendingly telling you about how women are just better at different things (but not during their periods haha) but this was a completely basic feminist talking point I grew up with like “girls can do it too! "everyone should get more aromantic" can appeal to tumblr's sensibilities but I genuinely think everyone should also get more asexual. I don't mean everyone stop having sex, what I mean is

Sex is not essential. You can live without it. Full stop.

Not having sex isn't shameful or a sign of failure. It also doesn't make anyone boring.

You are not entitled to having sex with anybody and nobody is entitled to having sex with you.

Sex is not what makes someone an adult.

Nobody's worth is defined by how much sex they have or don't have.

Sex is not equally important to everyone.

You can have fulfilling and happy relationships without sex.

You should only have sex on your own terms, not because you feel like you owe it to someone, or because you feel like you'd be incomplete without it.

Know your boundaries around sex and be firm about them. Know how to respect other people's boundaries.

The previous point also applies when it comes to discussing sex. If someone doesn't wanna talk about it or hear about it you have to back down.

Anything can be sexual but not everything has to be sexual.
