Haunted, written for @lawlightweek2026! This is for the first prompt Revive/Restart, and the full piece can be found on ao3 :)
"Good evening, Light," L said, but there was a problem—L was dead.
"What? Ryuzaki?"
Light couldn't quite tell if this was real, or if it was a product of his hallucinations again. For the first couple of years after his death, he couldn't stop thinking about L; he was his obsession. Whenever something bland would happen he would think that it would've been more interesting if L had been there, and he couldn't shake the thought of him. It was all consuming to the point that he dreamt about him most nights, with scenes that Light himself didn't even understand—some being them spending time together alive and as friends, some being him in mourning. Neither of these things happened in real life, so why were they happening in his sleep?
for lawlightweek 2026, for the first prompt i ran out of time, so here's some wips of one of my animations for you for the prompt of revive/restart :) i can't wait to show you the finished version soon!
this prompt strongly reminded me of Frankenstein, so I wanted to create a short comic to illustrate that! :D
L does remind me of the creature - a strange collection of lanky limbs, thin with jet black hair and lips, wide watery eyes that stare uncomfortable out of a pale face <3 — there’s also his isolation and difficulty blending seamlessly into society. A Lonely Monster

Prompt: Restart
Rrr-rrr-rrr-rrr.
The engine caught for half a second, coughed, and died.
Ryuzaki tried again, turning the key.
Rrr-rrr-rrr.
A weak ignition and a halfhearted shudder through the chassis, then… silence.
“I told you restarting the car would not work.” Light sighed. “Yet you ignored competent advice.”
Ryuzaki was the epitome of easygoing. “My deductions have now definitively established that restarting the car will not work.”
“Wonderful.” Light’s condescension was no longer particularly concealed. “We will be late for work if we continue this way.”
“Maybe.”
Light now was properly pissed off. “You know what. Why don’t you try restarting it yet again and let us see if maybe the car will actually explode, if for no other reason than to simply be given the opportunity to stop talking to you.”
Ryuzaki looked at him. Then, unexpectedly, he smiled. “Are you not having fun, Light?”
Light regarded him with disbelief. “This entire ordeal is not what I would describe as fun.”
“No?”
“No.”
Ryuzaki leaned slightly closer across the center console with a light lilt in his voice. “We could make it fun.”

Sticking only your upper body out of the tent to lie on your stomach is not the best move because it leaves you mostly defenseless, but you’ve never had to worry about attacks from within before; no one you mistrust has ever gotten close enough. This clean, sterile, germ-free (germ-free, Watari) territory is yours and yours alone. Also, you never did take up Halle’s invitation to capoeira classes. So. Your legs being trapped is hardly a loss, combatively speaking.
You lace your fingers together and stare.
In your little cage of video, Light Yagami takes a potato chip and eats it.
Again, you think, and click to replay.
Every time: the plunge, the prolonged twitching of the hand within the bag, the withdrawal. A robber dies in an alley in Kyoto without surveillance cameras. A chip dashes itself against the shore of Light-kun’s teeth. July twenty-first, forty seconds past eight. You could measure his muscle contractions with your eyes closed by now.
Again.
It’s ridiculous what murder investigations come down to, sometimes. A college student with a heretofore unused talent for ambidexterity. Your friend eating consommé chips. For the first time this does not strike you as very funny. For the first time none of it seems funny at all.
It used to comfort you, that a video always plays out the exact same way. It used to feel like having control for once.
Again.
This clip does rank very low on the list of evidence damning Light. Everything you have is circumstantial, but odd movement within a potato chip bag is, what, a circumstance of a circumstance? You’ve never bothered with lawyer terms. Moving on. There are much stronger points in your case — has the entire task force forgotten about Light vanishing from the surface of the Earth days before turning himself into confinement, you wonder; well, no, not Yagami-san — but this is the only piece of it you have frozen so solidly in amber. (And that conversation with Amane, but you’d rather not dwell on that.) Here: the image of Light Yagami under your thumb. Your home-grown mass murderer. You will never trap him in a way that matters.
You miss him. You watch him reach into the bag. You wish the miniature Light would turn to face you the way he did on the last day of surveillance. You wish the script would break. You’ve never wished for anything this much ever since escaping your irrelevant long-dead childhood and the debt must have accrued because you feel you could choke on it, drown in it, collapse tomorrow suffocated with blue light and wanting. Would he want to watch you die? If so: how many times?
Why are you doing this? you ask him in silence. Your only friend. Don’t you know you’re doomed? Don’t you know all you’re doing is soaking the world in blood? Can you hear me in there, Light-kun?
He’s a hopeless murderer. He’s unsalvageable. The chip snaps in half and you press replay.
