I don’t know if someone already pointed this out, but every avatar (at least from kyoshi) was in love with someone from (or at least mixed with) the nation of the element that is the next in the avatar cycle.

Let me elaborate:

As we know, the avatar cycle of reincarnation is earth -> fire -> air -> water ->earth... and it goes on

Starting from Kyoshi (earth kingdom 7ft tall goddes), she is confirmed from the graphic novel to be in love with Rangi, a fighter from the fire nation

After Kyoshi kicked asses and defeated death for 230 years, there was Roku from the fire nation, who was married with a noble woman also from the fire nation but, as we can see in the image, she has grey eyes that means she probably has some air nomad ancestor.

Then, after Roku lost his fight against a volcano (duh) it’s Aang turn, who falls in love with Katara (a water tribe queen)

And dulcis in fundo there is Korra with her wife Asami that is confirmed to have earth kingdom blood (green eyes) mixed with fire nation
