cut dialogue from a workprint of the Doctor Who TV movie
Ooh! That finally makes sense of the little prologue in Unnatural History.
the tardis medicating her beautiful wife
now you've seen his face
and you know that there is a place
in the sun
for all that you've done
One of my Dr who pet peeves is when people talk about classic who like oh haha they had a shoestring budget and all the effects were tinfoil and bubblewrap, that's how doctor who is SUPPOSED to be, it doesn't need a budget! And it's like ok but classic who was made by professionals who worked very hard and often had good special effects ):<
People dunk on the tinfoil cybermen but like cmon these are complicated specially made costumes that were re-designed several times over the course of the 60s and they are good! Look at these guys they're great!
would like to clarify that my issue here isn't really with people Insulting the way classic who looks (tho people do also do that) but with the more specific phenomenon of people trying to be nice about the show and in the process insinuating that people making it were something other than consummate professionals doing a good job.
See, the way you make good Doctor Who is you set out a mission statement that you're going to make the show more serious or toned down, and then you accidentally hire the exact wrong people to make that version of the show.
1970 they went "we're going to make Doctor Who a more grounded adult action series" and then they got a hippie with a fetish for psychedelic chromakey to produce it.
1980 they said "we're returning Doctor Who to Real Hard Science" and our new head writer is The Computers Mystic.
1987 they had a mandate to take the show in a lighter more kid-friendly direction, and then brought in a bunch of 20-something comic book nerds who wanted to kill Margaret Thatcher.

The hiatus between Gallifrey War Room 2 and 3 is now officially longer than the televised RTD2 era

Wait what announcement?
I think you’ve all been misinformed as to the actual IP situation of dr who in the 90s. Fans did not “own” dr who in the wilderness years and it’s a massive stretch to even say we controlled the direction of it. Like it’s an actively romanticized and ahistorical view of that time period to say it was a uniquely free time that we can never return to. Because it wasn’t. The major difference is not in how much control fans have as fan-authors (big finish has been actively hiring new fan-authors to write new original dr who stories this whole time) but in the specific content standards of Media In General these days. Like it’s true that we’re not getting Doctor Who: Sex And Violence like we did in 1991 but I wouldn’t even say that element of the VNAs is a major defining characteristic of what wilderness era who looked like.
Which is all to say that it’s going to be more similar to the old wilderness years than you think, but that’s because the old wilderness years were a lot worse than you remember
also: it is an objectively true fact that there are more avenues for fans to contribute to licensed dr who media now than there ever have been in the show’s history, regardless of whether the current moment becomes a “second wilderness years” or not. Do not let nostalgia for a time I Know many of you were not around for fool you—the pool of authors for the VNAs and EDAs were tiny compared to the amount of new writers big finish alone is bringing in. It wasn’t populist, it wasn’t The Fans taking Control, it was a few specific fans (overwhelmingly white and male fans with a very narrow view of what doctor who is or should be) taking direction from editors who ultimately reported to the BBC. It may not seem like it but we have been in a great time for fan labor being recognized and compensated by the bbc for a while.
Doctor Who remains an important part of the BBC
the TL:DR:
Christmas special cancelled
Russell T Davies and his production company are leaving the show
RTD has confirmed on Instagram that there was never a script or proper plan for the Christmas special
The show is going out to competitive tender.
For anyone who is confused as to what 'competitive tender' means:
Caveat that my knowledge of tendering comes from a completely different industry but roughly speaking: other TV production companies will now have an opportunity to pitch their plan for making Doctor Who to the BBC and how much funding they would need and the BBC will give the show to whatever company can do it best and cheapest. Show will remain with the BBC, they are just looking for a new contractor for the production.
Essentially whether this is good or bad news really depends on the likely outcome of the tender and i have no idea what the likely outcome is.
the best case scenario here is that the BBC find a new contractor who can make an acceptable version of Doctor Who for less money and in a few years time we get a whole new version of the show with a new Doctor etc.
and then obviously the worst case scenario is that no-one wants the show or can meet the BBC's funding requirements and then you know. Wilderness Years 2!!!!
my mum asked why the tardis would like chang lee so much she would let all that plot happen and this was my first thought
that one scene from seasons of fear
