This was supposed to be how to make a video for your 4D studio art class but it turned out to be more like how to make a YouTube video. I wanted to showcase the more creative side of YouTube so I choose YouTubers to emulate, what i thought, demonstrated that. I also wanted to show YouTubers that I thought conveyed a style that pertained to 4D. From what I had envisioned, the final product would have turned out a lot different than what it is currently. Some of the thing I would have changed would have been the way I executed filming the scenes for step 3, The type of music and the way it was controlled in the background of the piece, and just the whole process of how I made the piece. In step 3 I felt like the scenes that I had planned turned out different and they seemed, at least to me, super unorganized because it just jumps from one subject to the next with little indication other that the text of who I’m trying to appropriate in the bottom left corner. For the music I had little time to pick which song I thought fit with my piece the best, and I originally wanted it playing the whole time with more parts subdued than others, but I couldn’t figure out how to execute that so I just ended up putting it in scenes where I thought it needed it more. If I were to do this again I would have chosen something completely different because this did not come out how I envisioned it would.

“Video art has achieved its greatest success when it parallels and articulates ideas coming out of contemporary cultural, art, and political movements. Whether it is AIDS, activism, feminism, anti-war sentiments, racism, global trade, or other emerging issues, video is a medium engaged in questioning, stirring up, provoking, engaging, educating, inventing, informing, and articulating new ideas.”

I agree with this quote I pulled from the article because of the fact of how far technology has come. Without technology advancements such as social media there would have been minimal ways to share such video art but because of the technology we have today and with social media having a great influence on current events its easy for these videos to have great success.

Chris Burden is an video artist from the 70’s. The pieces of his I find really interesting are the series of strange commercials that he created that aired in Los Angeles in the early 70’s. The commercials I found include a 10 second clip of him climbing over glass in his bare chest, one where he simply says “science has failed, heat is life, time kills,”one where he has the names of famous artists on the screen and his name is the last to pop up, and my favorite one where all he shows is his gross income, business expenses, and net profit. I think it was a creative an innovative way how he decided to show his work to the public. He could have just set up a show in a well known gallery but somehow he decided to use the television as his platform, and he would set up the commercials so that they would air on popular channels at popular times of the day. My only question to him would be why air those specific commercials, why not air some with a little more meaning and more creativity but I’m pretty sure I know his answer already and that would be “why not."

The piece I created is a soundscape using sounds that I gathered from YouTube, sound websites, garage band, and from collecting sounds from the outside world. I choose to use more naturalistic and ambient sounds (with the exception of the middle of the piece) because I felt that it somehow complemented the softer melody of the piano, which was my stating point. I also used a lot of fade in and fade out’s because I felt that it also complemented the sounds that I was working with. But then there’s the middle of the piece, which I feel like it doesn’t belong with the rest of the piece. In the middle it’s more beat oriented and I guess more structured than the rest of the piece so it makes sense that it doesn’t seem to belong since the rest of the piece has this sort of mellow tempo. So why even keep the middle you say? I kept it in because it mixed up the other wise simple and boring (and to some other peaceful) track.

At first I wanted this piece to have the meaning of finding peace or finding something to believe in because that’s what Tyler Joseph is talking about in the beginning, but I didn’t really know how to convey that message through out the track. So the meaning could really be anything that the audience can imagine weather it be peace or happiness or even something completely different.

Artists Statement

The traditional inkblot tests are made up of ten standard abstract designs. Patients are given the inkblots to determine what they see, and that data is used to tell their personality. I wanted to use these tests in my pieces because of the meaning behind them. Since they are meant to be interpreted in any way just by looking at them I wanted to change them and interpreted them in a different way physically, and even by doing that there are still going to be different interpretations of my interpretation of the inkblot tests.

Initially I was going to just draw what I saw on top of the original inkblots and make them look cooler (and by cooler I mean really colorful), but then after I started it wasn’t going the way I had imagined it would so I decided to make gifs out of the usually static inkblots (and also made them look cooler). I figured that they could be interpreted in a different way each time the frame changed. After I ran out of ideas of how to make a different gif from the rest I took to tumblr and found an image that peeked my interest and I decided to try to recreate it using the inkblot images. After I was done creating a those, the pieces went from inkblot to something completely different which was what I was originally going for I just wasn’t sure how to get there.

After I was done with this project I decided to take an inkblot test myself just to see what I would get and according to BuzzFeed’s seriously accurate inkblot test I am “dangerously intelligent.”
