Orwell (video game)
So… I was fortunate enough to play this game before the dawn of the Trump administration. And I’m so glad, because I don’t know if my nerves would stand it now. BUT, it still needs a hearty recommendation because it’s awesome. A really thrilling story combined with an excellent and immersive interface.
You play as an ordinary citizen turned agent of the government utilizing a program called “Orwell” which has the power to spy and store data on members of the populace. It starts off innocuously enough… find out who perpetrated a terrorist attack by sniffing around on social media. But when you hit brick walls like privacy laws and such, you discover that the laws have been… loosened in regards to what the authorities can do and access if someone is a suspect or person of interest. As an agent operating on Orwell, you sift through the private lives of fellow citizens and you choose who to implicate, whose data to pass on, and who to protect. But who is the terrorist? Is there even a terrorist? Is suspicion alone grounds for this sort of invasion of privacy?
And let me tell you… this game is good at what it does, and that is immersion. It’s a wholly absorbing experience as you pick apart people’s lives, searching for even the barest hint that they might be up to something subversive. And when you find what you’re looking for, you gleefuly pass it on to your superiors… only to stop and think a moment later… “What the hell am I doing?”
Get it… it’s one of the best story games to come out last year, and it’s got DLC coming out soon!
