project Hail Mary is everything to me. That being said I do think the concept of grace crashing out over not having enough fuel multiple times in the book and movie while being AT THE PETROVA LINE is genuinely fucking hilarious. Man dies of thirst in freshwater spring, More at eleven.
now, I know that it would very much undermine the impact of the story and Rocky grace save stars wouldn’t make my life a million times better but literally it did not even have to be a suicide mission. They didn’t know if Tau-ceti had a line so they wouldn’t have gambled that, but tau-ceti wasn’t the next sun over— stopping along the way couldn’t have been out of the question, right? Intergalactic roadtrip style. And if they had a shorter trip to the next galactic gas station they could have even launched sooner lmaoooo

The Solarians
An introduction by Anthropologist Bráss
The Solarians– "space-blobs" or "star-children" as they are popularly know- are a race of space-faring aliens from the λth planet orbiting ES-I+V+, "Hellio" or Sol star-system. They are a carbon based organic species who lives in extremely cold environments, with a thin, oxygen-rich atmosphere. They consist mostly of water and host a variety of essencial micro-biomes within their bodies to keep those working, along with constant controled-combustions that powers their organs and blood flow.
Despite all that, one of the most notable aspects of this species is their natural ability to sense light waves, and, subsequently, hear the stars and planets. Because of this ability, from the dawn of their history to present day, the Solarians have cataloged the void, around which they have build vast mythology- most evident in the planets of their own system, that are all named after gods.
By the time Savior-Grace left her home planet, solarians already had a space program much more advanced than ours, with about II+ billion stars mapped, having traveled to their natural satellite and sent data collectors into their closest planets and orbiters, and when the Star-Greeter begin their journey to our system only ∀V human years later, they had stablished settlements in both the Home-Counterpart and The Warrior-Protector, with plans for posts in orbit of The Thunder-Ruler
Due to time dilation, years have already passed on Earth by this point, so it is impossible to say what else they have; however, speaking with the crew from the Star-Greeter, they report that the "Save Stars" program became top priority when the Taumeba arrived on the planet.
In Solarian Mythology, our own star is part of a group of about VIV stars that represent a river or river deity.
rocky is soooo unjealous & chill. he can even accept that grace has a rocky plush to squeeze
I cannot express enough just how badly I want some kind of epilogue to PHM where the Humans and Eridians are fully in contact with one another: sharing their cultures, teaching each other their sciences, travelling to each others systems for diplomatic & research purposes as well as offering each other whatever help they can while their populations regrow.
I wanna see the unbridled joy on the faces of human schoolchildren who get to meet the first Eridians who come to visit Earth. I wanna see the Eridian ambassadors insisting to the humans that they get a chance to meet their schoolchildren, because they themselves were schoolchildren when a human teacher came to their planet and inspired them to become astronauts.
I wanna see humans getting permission to set up a small embassy somewhere in the Eridani System, possibly even giving a very elderly Grace a chance to see humans again. I wanna see how surprised the humans are that he doesnt want to come home to Earth, but also see them quickly realize just how amazing it is to live, study and teach on an alien world.
I wanna see Humans & Eridians joining forces and creating a massive space program with the goal of inoculating every star in the Milky Way that has been infected with the astrophage. I want to hear them say "the fact that there are three Systems with life this close to each other implies that the whole Galaxy is likely teeming with life- probably even whole civilizations. And none of them deserve to go through what we went through. Screw any ideas about a 'prime directive.' We CAN help, and we WILL help. Lets spend the next 1000 generations saving the galaxy, together."
I wanna see more of this world, generations after these two planets were saved by a pair of alien scientists who became best friends, and who each risked everything to make absolutely certain that the other's world was just as safe as their own. I wanna see these two great peoples coming out of this horrible generational trauma, coming together to celebrate the life that they all get to live with their newly-found cosmic neighbors.
This world makes me feel so hopeful and excited to see what these people can do with each other aaaaa
Why are eiridians different colors (do they have different minerals, perhaps?)
Thank you for asking this question! I jumped out of my seat in joy in anticipation of answering. I will be explaining some speculative ways of how Eridians were able to evolve different colored carapaces :)
Traits in general can be sorted onto a spectrum: they evolved because they are in some way advantageous for survival and reproduction, or is so neutral to evolutionary success it just never needed to be selected out.
Eridians don’t percieve colors, so different color carapaces probably lands closer to the "no effect" end of the spectrum. Happy coincidence that (at least with movie depiction) we have colorful little pebbles!!
We can see the difference between an advantageous trait and a neutral trait demonstrated by the fur coats of wild cats vs house cats. Wild cats don’t have nearly as much fur variation within a species as house cats, because in the wild cats have a way higher need for good camouflage as it is crucial for hunting for prey and hiding from predators. House cats, however, coexisted with humans for centuries -- humans provide cats with shelters, food, and way more variability in types of environment (so a specific coat is not selected for) so even unusual fur patterns could be passed on with way more success.
Colors are likely a byproduct of other physical traits, so let’s consider some physical traits eridians CAN perceive via sonar: 1) texture, and 2) silhouette.
Silhouette is straightforward enough: by how sound bounces off a surface, an Eridian can get the outline of another Eridian, down to the unique spiky protrusions of each finger. They can also get information via the texture of the surface: sound bounces off differently on different textures. This combined with silhouette can allow very fast person recognition!
The Eridian carapace is entirely inorganic, being composed of oxidized metals. If “Eridian” is all one species, all Eridians over Erid probably have very similar carapace makeup, especially Eridians living in close proximity, because they consume similar foods. But if they are different species of the same genus (think modern humans and neanderthal humans), it could allow more possibility for more carapace variation. (If you are interested in the speculative biology different species of Eridians, @lutheban has a great post on it under the tag #eridian biology !!)
Addressing the second part of the asker's question: can the colors be result of different minerals? While pure mineral/crystal Eridian designs are super cool to see, it unfortunately is not super biologically viable (unlikely to be evolved consistently). Eridian carapaces are comparable to shells and scales, being grown and shed as needed; it would take way too much energy to maintain pure mineral carapaces when a mixture of what is most available is an option. But at the end of the day, spec bio is spec bio: if Erid is strange enough, even the strangest traits can become necessary and be evolved.
Now that we know these factors, we can go into the main possible reason Eridians develop different colors: variation that comes along with the mechanisms that create the unique textures and sillouhoutes of each Eridian. Perhaps every Eridian breaks food down just a little differently, making the carapace a little different between each Eridian. Color, in this context, is similar to human fingerprints and palm etchings: due to it having no evolutionary effect, it’s allowed to randomize to no bounds -- to the point it’s pretty much impossible for two humans to have the same etchings!
Random colors then mix and match and go wild with no selection for it or against it! Some of the simpler inheritance patterns are listed. Keep in mind that most of the time the actual genetics of inheritance are way more complex than just one gene, but these are very classic representations. If this is interesting to you, you can look up the term "non-mendelian inheritance" (YouTube and Wikipedia are both great resources), or ask me in the comments! :)
I really do think that to Eridians, the most alien thing about us is our obsession with space.
Space (and stars) are a much newer concept to Erid, at least relative to us. They cannot perceive stars. They can't even see their own sky.
And then here we are, utterly obsessed. The number of songs, movies, and TV shows that reference stars, the moon, our sun, it's light, astronauts, space — we can hardly go five minutes without bringing up at least one of those things. NONE of them are things Eridians have an established affinity for; to them, they're scientific concepts, and that's pretty much it.
And yet, stars are one of the first things our kids learn how to draw. We have a specific name for the connections we trace between them, and those constellations have been built into thousands of years of our history. We fought a proxy war based on who could get to them the fastest. I absolutely believe that, to Erid, this would be our defining characteristic above and beyond anything else.
It's almost cliché. How thematically on point it must be from their perspective, that an alien from a species so in love with the stars was the one to show up and save theirs.
You know, in other circumstances I might dislike making a character immortal, but I think that the Eridian medical thrum were faced with the choice between trying to solve Rocky's severe co-dependence and PTSD in less than thirty years time OR unlocking the secrets of the human genome and turning off Grace's aging and felt that the latter was a MUCH more realistic prospect.
he looked so good when he was absolutely miserable
I really do love that we've collectively decided that Adrian is the Eridian equivalent of Jessica Rabbit. They're so super hot and everyone is trying to court them while Rocky is away, especially now that it's been like ~50 years, but they just won't because no one could brighten their day like Rocky, and if Rocky doesn't come back, the sun might as well die.
James Ortiz shared his headcanon of Adrian and Rocky being in an arranged marriage that surprisingly worked out and they ended up being perfect for each other. I have ten billion questions about these important families and the expectations of this arranged marriage. And of them realizing they actually do love each other and this arrangement isn’t so bad!!!! Ortiz is a genius someone get him a tumblr. Get him a microphone and a stage, I want an uninterrupted hour of what he thinks abt these characters

One of the biggest tragedies of half the TADC fandom rejecting Jax's transness is they're not appreciating the fact that goose trojan horsed her transfem character in the shell of a tumblr sexyman and then made it canon in cinemas
