irl believe it or not I do run into people who find it weird that I regularly reread stuff like the Iliad and the epic of Gilgamesh and whatnot.

These days when someone says one thing like “I could never read that” or “I don’t know how people read that it’s so boring” or “why would you voluntarily read that?” I just reply with “Well, it’s a good book.”

This usually stops them from going on a rant about how much they hate English teachers or something.

A few weeks ago my own grandmother asked me why I bother with rereading the odyssey and I told her “Well, it’s a good book.” and that somehow shut her up. She never shuts up when she dislikes something that you like.

It’s not foolproof but when someone seems like they’re about to go on a rant about how much they hate something that you like, being like “well it’s a good book” or “I just think it’s fun” or whatever often shuts them off.

Are you really gonna argue with a guy just saying that it’s a good book or that it’s fun and leaving it at that? No. That makes you look like the asshole.

"Have you tried listening to an audiobook?" also goes a long way toward shutting people like that up too.

Plus it also gives people who do genuinely struggle to find the time or attention span to consume classic lit an avenue to do that.

Not to mention, when it comes to The Odyssey or The Iliad or Gilgamesh, these stories were originally told orally anyway, so listening to the audiobooks kind of feels like engaging with them the way they were meant to be engaged with.

Yeah that’s good. I used to TA for a GE British Literature class and I always suggested to students who struggled with medieval and early modern texts to try listening to an audiobook or watching a performance at the same time while they were reading and that helped a lot of them.

So I was very briefly a flagger, you know those people who hold the stop signs at the beginning of construction sites to coordinate traffic through dangerous areas? That was me. We're required to wear highly visible vests and in some cases depending on the area high visibility pants as well. In my state neon pink was allowed for safety gear and I wore it every single day but I never meant a single Foreman who didn't try to tell me it wasn't allowed. But here's the thing everybody when you're a human person standing at the beginning of the construction site in a state that's famous for its constant rain and dreary weather, yellow or orange high-vis gear is it the same color as all the orange and yellow high visibility equipment immediately behind you . Traffic cones, signs, big pieces of machinery, barricades it's all orange and yellow. So you as a human person blend into your background which is the opposite of what you want because people drive more carefully when they can see human people in front of them instead of a bunch of stuff. I grant that it does not feel like they drive more safely. But they do.

You know what color you can't find on any of the signs and safety gear behind me? Bright fucking pink. So I had to keep a copy of the fucking law with me at all times and show it to Foreman all the time. Every time I went to a new construction site, I'd have the samw argument. And even though I was only a flagger for a year I never even had a close call with traffic because I stood out as a human shaped thing in front of all the construction. Which is unusual. Flaggers have close calls and get clipped by or just flat out hit by cars all the time. This was a case where wearing pink actually made me safer and better at the job I was supposed to be doing but they still fucking hated it.

I had male colleagues who frequently wore camouflage under their High VIs vests. In Washington state where you are frequently standing in front of construction equipment and a backdrop of evergreen trees in no form in ever had a problem with that.

Help there's even substantial research in this area proving that bright pink is the safest color you could wear. Why is it for debate. It's probably a combination of the fact that it doesn't blend into nature or the construction equipment behind you, but it might also play on people's sexist nature to be more gentle and careful around women otherwise if it keeps me from getting hit by a fucking car I truly do not give a shit.

something i adore about hadestown is that it still meant something, y'know what i mean? like okay, no orpheus's song did not convince hades to give up his empire. hades' love for persephone isn't enough to deconstruct the machine he's built and has convinced himself that he needs in order to protect what he has. but he let them go. he saw the love eurydice and orpheus had for one another and it convinced him to let them try. orpheus may have turned around but they still walked, they almost made it. doubt set it but they were right there. that's further than anyone else can say. nobody else had made it that far. who's to say someone else can't make it a few steps further? persephone is able to leave the underworld and go home again when she needs to. spring has come again, if we're lucky autumn just might too. will this change be permanent? we don't know. but it's something. it doesn't knock down the wall but it's one brick out of it. and that means something. it wasn't all for nothing. it's a crack in the wall. there's a reason we keep singing this old song.
