Local LGBTIQ+ organisation LEGABIBO welcomed the government’s move, describing it as “a necessary and long-overdue step toward restoring dignity and aligning our legal framework with constitutional values of equality and human rights.” The group said the change sends “a clear message that LGBTIQ+ persons are not criminals, and that their lives and relationships deserve protection, not punishment.” LEGABIBO noted that the colonial-era provisions had long cast a shadow over the lives of LGBTIQ+ people in the country.

one of the most poisonous ideas normalised in our current neoliberal capitalism fuelled society is that a person must be exceptional (usually at generating profit) as a means of justifying their access to resources. from the inspiration porn stories of disabled people "overcoming their challenges", perpetuating this idea that to make up for the "drain" on society that disability is one must be outstanding in some way, to seemingly innocuous ideas we all parrot that one must earn rest, that someone must work hard to have worth, etc.

it's an amazing gift to be exceptional at something, and many of us are remarkable at one thing or another, but to base our access to life sustaining needs around this curbs our ability to be so. an overworked, burnout person worrying if they will have enough money to afford food will not be able to be exceptional when they are already barely able to survive.

WAIT HOLD ON I cannot fucking believe when I was like four years old my parents were cajoling me to walk with the family and trying to get me to keep up even though I kept insisting that I was "tired" until they took me to a doctor and found out my LUNGS DIDN'T WORK. how insane that we live in a world where reasonably loving parents think their FOUR YEAR OLD is trying to be LAZY. like they were mortified to be clear. adults are just so trained to ignore children's complaints as untrustworthy, kids just need discipline, they can't possibly speak for themselves. what the fuuuuck.

I think also it pays as a parent to remember that whatever is bothering them might be expressed as a silly thing but still be a more serious thing.

My daughter as a 2.5 year old used to throw a tantrum every time we tried to get her to sit on the "wrong" side of the couch to watch TV. It made no sense, she couldn't explain what was the problem, it wasn't worth the argument so I usually let her be without thinking more deeply about it.

So anyway at her 3yo health screening it turned out she was basically cortically blind in one eye. For whatever reason she had trained her brain to not read the input from that one eye... which was why she had a preferred side of the couch, because she'd put her bad eye towards the wall and her good eye towards the TV and the rest of the room.

Nothing that couldn't be fixed by wearing glasses, thankfully, thank you free mandatory 3 year old health screenings in my country, qualified thank you expensive optometrists. Without the screening there's every possibility we would have missed that completely until she was in school because she didn't have the language to express what was up.

But yeah just goes to show: sometimes with kids a recurring lowstakes problem is actually the only obvious sign you'll get of a high stakes one that is more fixable the earlier you catch it.

this applies to teenagers as well btw. so many times I was dismissed for being a "mood teen" or having "an attitude". not to say those weren't true, usually because I was horrifically depressed which wasn't taken seriously either. but many times I had physical things going on. the incident that comes to mind is when my dad spent all day forcing me to go hiking and every time I said I was tired, I'd be told off for dragging my feet and needing to be more active (I was still doing extracurricular sports at the time). turned out at the end of the day when we got back to the hotel and I was beyond exhausted I had a 39+C fever, like I said I did btw. what a surprise that it was hard for me to spend the day awake at all, let alone trekking through the forest.

currently watching: I was locked in on The Pitt, but since the season 2 finale came out I started watching Kingdom (2014). It's about an MMA gym and features Nick Jonas playing a repressed gay MMA fighter, what's not to love

currently reading: I've been reading a lot of academic papers for the four different literature reviews I have to do for my final papers at uni, otherwise I haven't been reading much for fun. I got about halfway through In August of 1944 by Vladimir Bogomolov, but I haven't had time to read it lately and lost interest in the meantime.

current obsession: I feel like I have a new hyperfixation every day, or more like I'm cycling through my already existing ones so its hard to pick a specific one. I think the most persistent one this few months has been MMA. I used to be relatively good at it, but quit in high school due to a mix of mental health, studying and health issues. I only got back into it since last semester, like 7+ years after quitting and it's been a journey... definitely want to get better, it's one of the only sports I genuinely enjoy. aside from that I think my username and recent posts kind of clues you in on what my general interests are lmao

currently working on: I'm finishing the first year of a master in political behaviour, and as it's the end of the semester I'm working on final papers for my classes. I think the most interesting one is on the topic of how militarised masculinity, following the unprocessed events of the Yugoslav Wars, influences anti-gender discourse in Serbia. I'm generally interested in Eastern European/Balkan countries and democratic theory through a queer lens.
