To All Amara x Dean Haters
So, like a lot of you, I’m dying to see the next episode of Supernatural after this intense mid-seasons finale but apparently unlike a lot of you, I actually find the Darkness (Amara) and Dean dynamic amazing and I can’t wait to see more of it. After coming on here, I found basically 3 arguments haters of this relationship are using:
1) Dean should only be with Cas
2) Dean doesn’t even like her, he’s just brainwashed
3) Dean shouldn’t even be with her because that would be pedophilia
I think we can agree the first one isn’t even worth elaborating on because let’s face it, Destiel is not and has never been a “thing,” it’s just something the fandom has tried to force down people’s throats (much to the continued dismay and discomfort of the Supernatural cast.)
Secondly, Dean’s encounters with Amara, the Darkness, suggest that he is influenced by her presence for obvious reasons (tied to her by the mark) but I disagree that he has no genuine feelings for her whatsoever and that he has no free will. Since their meeting he has wanted to ensure her protection from the virus and thereafter personally drove back and forth to the house where she was staying after hearing she was in danger. His encounter with Crowley solidified this in that he was extremely defensive and wanting to protect her from the demon when Crowley told Dean of his plans with the child. Next, each and every scene where Dean was met with the decision to take Amara out -- his natural reaction from his father’s training (hmm, isn’t that actually brainwashing though??) -- his eyes darted around, his jaw clenched, and he closed his eyes and took deep breaths, as if prepping himself for the actions he knew he had to do even though he didn’t want to. I think we all agree he is confused, concerned, maybe even fearful at times because well, who the hell wouldn’t be?? BUT let’s not get carried away and join the hate bandwagon. Amara is JUST as effected by their bond as Dean, despite how powerful she is and maybe even more so than Dean. The difference is she accepts it. They share the need to protect one another when they’re in harm’s way. Dean is conflicted. They’re relationship is not traditional. That doesn’t mean it’s not real.
And thirdly, when Dean kissed the Darkness, Amara was already a grown woman, so that renders this argument completely invalid. Yes, there was some sexual tension in earlier episodes, but overall their relationship continues to be more on the protective and just genuinely caring side. But if you want to get into it, then deal with the fact that even though Amara initiated the kiss, Dean still responded and yeah he looked like he was enjoying it. He only stepped back (eventually) because he could recognize that it was wrong...not that it felt wrong.
Basically, you guys are just upset that Dean is with someone -- in whatever form this comes in. A lot of people seem to think Amara is genuinely evil and are constantly comparing her to Ruby’s hold on Sam but that’s just plain wrong and has been acknowledged as such by Jensen himself. Amara may do ‘bad’ things, but she is not evil in and of itself and she is not manipulating. She has a higher goal in mind (to find God, get revenge, and reinvent her own world), but everything she does along the way is for that purpose and we can plainly see that she is very upfront about what she wants. I like that the writers framed her this way as less of a traditional ‘baddie’ but more of someone we can all relate to...This story is creative and the best we’ve seen in a while and I can’t wait to see more of it unfold.
