schrodinger's chekhov's gun. a detail in a story that looks like it should have some big payoff but it's too early to tell if that's relevant or if the author just has a passion for lovingly describing guns.
schrodinger's chekov's occam's razor: you find an inconsistent or inaccurate detail in a work that would be brilliant if it was foreshadowing a plot twist later on, but it's too early to tell whether the author expects you to be smart, and the simplest explanation is that they fucked up

ok not to be that guy but like. labor rights and working class rights can coexist with 24h services and late amenities. its certainly hard to do so without worker exploitation in this political and social environment, it’s not a conflict likely to resolve overnight. but 24h services are important and especially valuable to those of us that are disabled or are on a different circadian rhythm. in fact more professional, health, and government services should be available or at least possible to work on asynchronously (if applicable) during late or odd hours, while workers also get sufficient pay for their labor and proper consistent scheduling. this would be much easier on the workers with night schedules if the entire professional world didn’t grind to a halt at 5pmEST
SHIFT! SYSTEM!
A 24 hour day can easily be broken into 6 four-hour shifts, four six-hour shifts, three eight-hour shifts, or 2 12-hour shifts - the suitability of those shifts depends entirely on the intensity of the work (though there are very few things that any human can do continuously and competently for 12 hours in a row)
If a service must be provided 24/7, but it's only ethical to make a person do that service for three hours at a time, then congrats: You need to employ 8 people to do that task in 8 shifts!
The distinction between 'part time' and 'full time' workers, and the rights and protections afforded to each being different, is a fucking racket and needs to be dismantled.

this is a book series that will have you rocking back and forth and ripping your hair out and bashing your skull into a wall but then you have to look someone directly in the eyes and say yeah it’s about a fake sport with fake drugs and also the yakuza is involved
thoughts on tron: ares spoilers ahead
so i walked out thinking that it was pretty mid. there were a lot of things i liked and they were mostly audiovisual. there was just enough interesting stuff to keep my watching the movie, but also be frustrating and making me want to write a tweaked script because my god go girl give us nothing in terms of themes and messaging.
- the question/discussion of ai in this movie feels very contemporary and not really OF the tron universe? idk how to say that and it’s been a long time since i’ve seen tron:legacy, but do they actually say ai in that movie? i just remember that concept feeling more sci-fi coded than just like modern ai. because they frame it as ai so you’re expecting them to comment on that - especially in the climate we’re in right now - and it is the most basic and out of touch take. good vs evil… war vs abundance. blah blah blah i think it might have been funny or interesting to have ares say some objectively false things because that’s what his learning language model concocted rather than just like create his points of reference from skimming eve’s file (which how does this file have her entire life story on it???? i could understand her employee file being on there, but home videos and all that???? no. find that shit elsewhere or something. seemed a little too convenient). i can understand the lack of generative ai commentary and LLMs if the programs stay in the grid, but since they are out and learning from the real world, i think it was a missed opportunity to build on that with ares and contrast that with athena.
- as i was watching it i couldn’t get away from the thought that ares should not have been a man and that athena should not have been a women (let alone Black). like they should have switched or something. idk i just think it would have been more interesting for a woman to break her coding/directive. and then you could have had a lot better/more empathy from eve and maybe the sister storyline would have been more influential (and fleshed out because that was like man’s dead wife smiling under diaphanous white sheets level of undeveloped) to the relationship between eve and ares. could have been neat!!! and then athena being a man and good little soldier who’s loyalty and obedience to power is what uplifts and then ultimately destroys them in the end. ugh it would have been so much better. this is the main aspect that makes me want to a write a fix it fic.
- okay that scene where athena is dying/derezzing/whatever and she was basically like was it worth it why did you do it what is your purpose now and ares was like “idk man” SO UNSATISFYING. like it makes me so mad. to just say i don’t know but i’ll find out is the most anticlimactic shit i’ve ever seen. like you try to make parallels to frankenstein’s monster and i know that is a contemplative character but you churn out this dogshit character that takes the blandest impetus of motivation from its skimming of kindle’s most underlined passages. that was an interesting hook! give me more. actually explore that influence/connection. my take is that i would have liked ares to say something like “life is about following your own directives.” just give us something - and not just a love of depeche mode and rubiks cubes. take a stand! have a take! give us a point of view! show some critical thinking!
- i did like most of the visuals. i think i loved tron:legacy because most of it takes place in the grid. this one taking place mostly outside of it with very little exploration of the dillinger grid/server was kind of a let down for me. i think i would have rather had like a foot chase or something through the dillinger server than the bike/drone chase because the pseudo water thing was kinda weird to me and i didn’t enjoy it. also the sound mixing in that part was atrocious. i couldn’t understand anything they were trying to say. also couldn’t tell if they were trying to be provocative/sexy with the way they were positioned on the bike at first with eve on her back and ares above her — glad they moved out of that position — but it definitely fell flat and zero chemistry found. but anyway a foot chase would have been a neat foil/parallel to the physical hacking of the encom server that ares did earlier in the movie. cos i thought that was interesting but that chase to the transfer bay or whatever was not. also breaking glass is like the least interesting or impressive thing to me and there was a lot of that in this movie. the lasers were just supped up 3d printers like they even had all the support stuff on the outside like real 3d printers do so that was a neat detail.
- like i get it for “realism’s” sake but why did we have to have the police and military make an appearance? ugh disney military industrial complex strikes again. gotta get that DOD funding. but i think this gripe ties into my want of more time in the grid rather than the real world.
-the humor was not successful. there were like one or two times where i found something humorous and all the other times i was rolling my eyes at just how hard it was trying lol. idk if this means anything but it felt like snl comedy - like stupid or just overly random or drawn out asides by fringe side characters. jared leto is not the actor you get to deliver humorous listing monologues. honestly more of an evan peters gig. couldn’t help but think that they were trying to give ares like a glen powell personality?? which glen would have been a wild choice for that role but that’s what it felt like they were going for (but my mind might have been influenced by the running man trailer before the movie).
so yeah i feel like i had more gripes with the script than anything because those characters were FLAT. only julian and his mom had any razzle dazzle but i think that came from the actors than from the script. the pacing was so back and forth. the irl chase scene could have been cut in half and those minutes could have been devoted to character development, especially ares and giving him a bit more of a solid motivation. overall pretty mid but there was a lot of potential that could have been really cool given different script development and actors.
I was actually just reading about this in Caste: The Origins of our Discontent. The author talks about how one’s body goes into stress or anxiety or defense mode when the person knows they’re being followed, watched, or otherwise scrutinized. She brought race into it. A Nigerian man, who was just a person in his country, was healthy as anything. He got to the U.S. and within a year, his doctor told him he was suddenly pre-diabetic and had high blood pressure. He never had those things in his country. He learned that being Black in the U.S. is a very different experience than being Black in a Black-centric country. The author elaborated more about those in poverty, women, and being a minority in general. Having that “fight or flight” triggered in the body, sometimes for hours or days or weeks at a time, degrades the body’s natural defenses, making them more vulnerable to disease.
being poor or a minority literally takes an average 10-15 years off of your life

A thing that bothers me about wizard schools in popular media – outside of the magic-grade-school stuff, anyway – is that they're typically depicted as being basically magic universities, but their actual curricula and pedagogical approaches look much more like those of a technical institution. Like, buddy, that's not a wizard university, that's a wizard trade school. You can't just slap university student culture on top of trade school pedagogy. It doesn't work like that – the one emerges from the other!
"Well ACTUALLY wizards are" wizards are made up. They can be analogous to whatever real-world class or vocation the author wants. Wizard-school-as-university and wizard-school-as-technical-institute are both perfectly fine; what I am grumping about is wizard-school media that doesn't seem to have a clear picture of how different sorts of educational institutions actually operate.
Okay but now I really want to know what a Wizard technician would look like. Would he wear magical overalls with all kinds of reagents and magic tools sticking out of his numerous pockets?
A guy like that walks into your tower with a toothpick in his mouth, takes one look at your summoning circle and goes
“I see yer problem. You used chalk B12 instead of S3. B12 is only for transmutation circles. Gimme a sec I think I have a piece somewhere here.”
He fixes your circle, test summons an imp and goes.
“There ya go. Fit as a fiddle.”
“It’s the chalk.”
“The chalk? I always use that chalk, it’s never been a problem.”
“Ah - yes. This stuff will work just fine for most circles, but, uh - here, take a look with my loupe. You see the off-color flecks? Can’t hardly see them with the naked eye, but those are impurities. Silicates, might even be some iron in here, to be honest. Usually won’t cause a problem, but - you said you hadn’t tried this particular summons before?”
“First time trying a 5th level, yeah.”
“Those silicates will make your scribing a little fuzzy when viewed from the astral plane. You see, for example, these three fine lines here? With this chalk, on the astral that looks like one thick line with fuzzy edges. They can’t tell exactly what you want, and they’re picky lil’ critters so they just won’t do anything in response.”
“Really? Oh. I always thought the expensive chalk was just fancy to be fancy.”
“Making pure chalk is difficult, you need a dedicated production line or dust gets in the finished product. To be honest, you don’t need to bother with it for most things, but 5th and up, 5th level and up, it actually is necessary. Anything with lines within about two millimeters of each other.”
“So I need to start over?”
“Unfortunately yes. You’ll have to erase all this, but with some good chalk it should work just fine. Next new moon your summons should go off without a hitch.”
“Dang. At least it’s not my sigils, I was worried it was my sigils.”
“Nah Your sigils look good. Even and balanced. You know what you’re doing, it’s just an equipment problem.”
“Thanks for the help, sorry to make you come all the way out here.”
“No problem! It’s my job.”
