I’m not crying you’re crying
doctors in the 19th century really were like maam i diagnose you with woman
Doctors today are still really like ma'am I diagnose you with woman
I am saying this as a native New Yorker, SHOWS ARE ALSO FUCKING EXPENSIVE. But truly, I know so many people who are fans of shows that I’ve seen but they’re unable to because of their location or financial struggles. I do think that musicals should be more widespread and accessible, but saying that this doesn’t hurt the industry is a bit of a stretch. I mean, if you’ve already seen the professionally recorded video of the musical, why go see the show? It wouldn’t work as well as you think it would. And even if this was the case, add revenue wouldn’t bring in nearly as much money as they get doing live shows on broadway. I do believe that there should be a way for more people to get the theatrical experience that we do in New York, but by some means that wouldn’t hurt the show’s profit or turnout.
But people go to concerts for their favorite musical acts all the time. Even though they can watch their videos or listen to their music pretty much anytime anywhere.
Yeah, I watched my VHS of CATS to death as a teen and I had two different soundtracks and I STILL went to see it when it was touring near me THREE DIFFERENT GODDAMN TIMES. Having a nicely filmed version of the show, if you like the show, just increases the urge to go see the real thing when you can afford it!
There is nothing that compares to a live theatre experience. Just from the standpoint of sheer energy. So yes, people will still go to see live theatre. I have the recording of the last broadway performance of RENT and I’ll still go see it live when it’s near me. People who love theatre and who have the means to go will do it. This just helps people who can’t afford it.
I remember when MTV aired a Legally Blonde the Musical on TV and it was awesome.
Also it makes musicals accessible to people who physically CAN’T go see them. Professionally-shot videos can have subtitles. Live performances can’t. Professionally-shot videos can be paused if someone gets overwhelmed and starts screaming. A live performance will be disrupted if that happens.
Refusing to make musicals accessible to a wider range of people is a whole bunch of -isms put together and there’s no fucking excuse for it.
#podcasts are almost all 100% free to listen to#yet thousands of people still pay to go to podcast live shows they could get for free at home#theater would still be alive if they recorded their shows
In addition: If they’re so worried about money, the recordings don’t have to be free- just have them available to rent online for a couple bucks Recordings are the only way some shows will even be seen if they flop too soon. Heathers didn’t last long but the bootleg got super popular and now it’s practically a classic. The original Lion King was re-released in theaters a few years ago. Despite it being one of the easiest movies to find in a home or library, people still went to see it in theaters, even in 2D. Broadway is continually making musicals to target a younger crowd (Prom, Be More Chill, Mean Girls) but young people aren’t the ones who can afford to see these shows, let alone travel to NYC. They make shows for them while ignoring if anyone can actually see them. The only reason I would ever care about seeing Newsies even locally is because the recorded version was on Netflix. I wouldn’t have cared about the show nearly as much if all I had was the soundtrack and the underwhelming 1992 movie. Even if you had the money and opportunity to visit NYC and buy tickets, a whole bunch of people aren’t going to spend their one shot at a Broadway musical on a new play they don’t know much about. Hardcore Beetlejuice fans might want to see Beetlejuice without much context, but most would make a safe choice and go for Lion King or Book of Mormon, not King Kong the musical

This is why we punch Nazis. This is why this vile ideology must be stamped out viciously every time it tries to come out of its hole.
Never. Again.
