there’s something about HxH that hits you really hard when you realize that in most other series Leorio wouldn’t be the “normal one.”

i’m just sitting here like. man. he. leorio. he cares so much. he’s so kind and determined. and also an idiot. willing to throw his life away for his goals and also willing to shank a bitch he hates even if he’s laughably under-leveled. loud and impulsive chaos man with a knife, can’t sit back and let people face harm. TRAGIC backstory as a casualty of heartless capitalism that led to his friend’s death and led him to pursue a form equity to the point of risking death for some tuition money. in most series all that would make him stand out as a main character!!! it’s easy to see Leorio (or dismiss him) as “the normal one” only because his abilities and his arc aren’t centered on “best at destruction and punch real good” but on compassion and care. if hxh was any other series (except for One Piece) he wouldn’t be “the normal one” and that speaks to how intense and batshit hxh is. of course he looks normal next to killua’s background, kurapika’s pain and self-sacrifice, gon’s drive and destructive power, of course he seems ordinary in a world where chimera ants and city-sized wastelands exist. look at me, he has one of the most powerful nen abilities in the whole series but it took him three times longer to get there than his friends and we didn’t even get to see it, do you hear what i’m saying? professionally overpowered hunter ging freecss is impressed with it. he has all the hallmarks of a major character or even a protagonist but he isn’t because this is Hunter X Hunter.
