heyyy it's me with another RT tarot wip post (see the earlier one here). it’s time to finally paint them as I’ve assembled everyone I need for now

yapping on inspirations below the cut

so, on to Lizzie as Death. I tried to combine the ideas of literally bringing death (in the form of weapons behind her back) and new beginning, which is supposed by the actual tarot (as she is looking into the future and it looks very bright (c)). in terms of composition, I was heavily inspired by Der Wanderer über dem Nebelmeer. when I get to paint her, I want to covey this coloristic unity of fore- and background that Andrey Remnev has (I recommend checking out his works, they are superb, the textures get me every time)

for Idira, the composition is taken from the original tarot card (kinda), so there’s nothing new. the main idea was her hesitation between reaching out and touching the forbidden power and staying how and who she is. in terms of color, in the future I want to add some color highlights as is shown on example no. 1 and (I HOPE) create an eerie feeling similar to early 20th century expressionist cinema, much like this shot from house of wax on example no. 2

and Argenta. Honestly, i still don’t know what to do with her, it’s hard т_____т but i want to convey whatever this exact “vertigo” poster and the concept of black lodge has. The feeling of something being wrong and the overall atmosphere of threat. Also red and black being the primary colors with a little speck of violet

it’s Wednesday already where I live so WIP Wednesday!!

Trying to solidify the concepts for characters tarot (see older post), these three are kinda done and waiting to be colored

ok so I like to yap from time to time! And this time I want to share small bits of my thoughts on the process.

Cassia right there is quite symmetrical, like religious figures on paintings. I want her to look like one :p also I seek to implement some stylistic elements of bysantinian icons, such as the way of drawing eyes and maybe fabrics? also (x2) I LOVE Botticelli and try to learn from his painting techniques! Also (x3) I want to paint Cassia in most radiant colours because of her vision theme.

On to Heinrix and more orthodox imagery. I highly recommend you (anyone who reads it) watch “Ivan the Terrible” by Sergei Eisenstein, its absolute cinema. What I want to say is, the characters here are rarely alone. The interiors of the palace are filled with faces of saints, and it resonates with WH40K visuals for me: it is rare not to see the Emperor’s image somewhere around. So for Heinrix’s card I chose to add such ever-present image, so he would feel additional guilt for his actions, duh

And Kibellah! As a religious follower, she is also symmetrical, mind you, and I wanted to utilise next concepts: her being chained by the beliefs and her being a part of the ship. So the purity seals around her (believe me they will stand out more….) shall be like a spiderweb, and the background… it is like a mix of muscle tissue and capillaries that surround Kibby and maybe pull her back? Either way she must feel like a logical continuation of it. Also want to give her a bit of tradgoth makeup :p

Now, to the yapping part

Why is your character’s eye colour the way it is? Is it random, or not?

Elisabeth's eyes are dark blue, on cloudy days and inside they seem black; the colour comes to live when it's sunny — her eyes turn to a more radiant blue.

I gave Lis dark eyes because I wanted her to have a somewhat eerie feeling; not like a voidborn (which she is not), but like a person who's seen too much. Also I do like the combo of pale skin and hair (it started greying after torture + age, so its not a vibrant color really) with dark eyes. Makes them stand out.

Who gave your character their name?

Canonically, her parents. She didn't change names, only titles, both military and RogueTrader-ish.

Technically, the choice of her name was an impulsive one, but not too random. When my friend recommended I play RT, I read bits of WH40K lore and was like - they speak fckin GOTHIC? And, as a goth music lover, I instantly remembered our lady Elisabeth Fraser and her undecipherable manner of singing. Like, yeah, speak your Gothic language, my child.

Does your character have tattoos? What do they mean?

I think Lis had an aquila tattooed on her back when she just enlisted in the military and when she was a pure dogmatic. But years passed, and it got sort of covered with scars. Moreover, when heretics tortured her and cut a nice little chaos symbol on her forehead, she forgot about the tattoo and covered the scar with an aquila instead, so no one should question her loyalty.

Sometimes I think that it may be uncomfortable as fuck. Like, can people with such implants move their... brows? Their facial expressions should be really limited... So I also headcanon that Lis was a radiant young girl before and showed much emotions, but with age and all the shit that happened to her she became colder.

you might've seen my older post regarding the same theme, but I wanted to redesign Lizzie a bit, remembered that Heinrix states red as his fav colour and NEEDED to put Jae in pretty clothes + rewatched Pride and Prejudice (1995) and yes. the only remaining brain cell was activated

growing up on Carthago Prime, a forge world, Elisabeth wanted to be one of the Skitarii, but failed and enlisted in the Imperial Guard. she made a name for herself as a brilliant sniper and a great planner, and was soon promoted to an officer. still, she remembered her people and petitioned for better conditions for mere soldiers.

when she covered her troops' retreat on Asclepius VII, heretics captured her and tortured for a month until her own troops came back for her. her whole body was scarred and broken, heretical symbol on her forehead, but Elisabeth was alive.

since then she didn't go in the field much, but held a position of general militant in her army and commanded from the HQ, until a message from the Coronus expanse demanded her departure...

finally got to draw my Lizzie and make her a character with a story instead of a self insert for kissing Heinrix
