physically i’m here but mentally i’m floating face down in a river
one of my favorite minor things about RotE is that althea gets the first use of the word “fuck” in the entire series and, more importantly, it was in response to her and amber catching lesbian allegations
There is a tragedy of ROTE that is a time too late, an era expired, a missed chance, something once beautiful decaying into dust. There was an era where everything was wonderful but now we live in the era where that’s gone and only a few people can remember it. There was a city here and people lived their whole lives in it and the only people who will ever understand that are the last dragon on earth and a man whose brain is actively dissolving into a soup.
everything in realm of the elderlings comes back to dragons... who will the saviours of the six duchies be? dragons. what are those weird rocks? dragons. what are these weird boats? dragons. what about these aquatic sea serpents? well, this may come as a surprise to you,
the pseudo-benign genteel conservatism of the Vestrits is so beautifully woven through every single character in the family, it's 10000 times better and more interesting than any of their more likeable traits. Love seeing them clinging to it in all of their different ways, love seeing it challenged, love itttttttt.
Ronica and Althea sticking by Davad's useless traitor ass bc he's an old family friend bound to them by the shared trauma of the Blood Plague even though he BUYS AND OWNS PEOPLE NOW
Althea's particular derision for Kyle's ~foreign~ looks, to the point where she wonders how her sister could ever be attracted to him
Keffria's attitude to women and sex and women having sex
Ronica attributing Malta's opposition to her as her "taking after her Chalsedian father"
Malta feeling so extremely othered in her own house by the women of her own family that she overidentifies with Kyle even though he's just as dismissive of her
Ronica and Malta considering the merits of owning slaves
Ronica standing atop the hill looking at the city, deciding that she can't help her community bc first of all she has to think of her immediate family (the problems of the city will grow to affect her family)
Althea not committing herself to the side of the conflict brewing in the city bc first of all she has to think of her immediate family (the conflict in the city will grow to affect her family)
Althea taken aback and bristling at the thought of Amber, a FOREIGNER, buying Paragon off of the original divinely ordained charter-approved Old Trader family
Kyle should have never gotten Vivacia bc he's a piece of shit but also!! Because he's a foreigner
Althea multiple times for some reason: the Six Dutchies are SAVAGE
Malta's everything
My favorite Malta take though is her deciding that her unwed mannish aunt and the local weirdo foreigner beadmaker and also the mannish foreigner savage bodyguard lady must be having crazy lesbian sex. I wish Malta I wish.
Amazing. When Selden walked in on everyone finally hugging and immediately went "So Malta and Papa aren't bad anymore?"... that moment went platinum in my reading nook, 14 minute standing applause. Children notice everything and are incredibly tuned in to family dynamics, so true auuuuuuuuuuuuuu.
gold dust woman
It was really funny of robin hobb to have this guy in her high fantasy book series who is literally the worst most misogynistic man you have ever seen, and his name? The name of this terrible misogynistic high fantasy antagonist character? yeah it’s Kyle.
niche (?) rote moments that might eventually drive me to wailing and tearing my garments outside of robin hobb's washington state home
the fool blushing + turning away when seeing fitz's hedge witch love-me necklace. telling him to put it away. the depth of love beloved feels for fitz gives me psychic damage
this-finger-will-never-wear-a-priest's-ring. bodily trauma + crushing worldbuilding out of left field specifically to harm you. thank you!
assassin's quest. fitz sees the memories the fool put in girl on a dragon. one of them is a vision of himself as a boy running across the yard at burrich's heels. (thinking of little fool watching little fitz that raptly, from a hidden place? what that memory might have meant to him? was there a moment of realization there? im eating paper)
also assquest: fitz finding out he has a "little daughter" (bawling.) and wondering "what would i have named her?"
we've discussed this before but the keffria v. kyle scene. "consider how long it took me to awaken you to a woman's feelings" ha ha ha awesome
not that niche but "can you not call me that?" and fitz's long long long silence... his stiffness after... the courage he'd worked up to call him beloved at all.... robin hobb can you hear me i'm outside
fitz's comment in fool's errand about knowing exactly where dutiful's hair will grow oddly in the spot beneath his chin. lines that made me put the book down
the baby doll in the fool's room. can anyone hear me
everything anyone ever said about chivalry farseer. "did he laugh easily?" chivalry you will live on always in my heart and in my blog.
this goes for you too, keppet's mom. "in a voice that would sound young to me now." yeah.
and there are more. there are more
thinking of amber's "harder still, you have to admit to yourself that perhaps he has needs you cannot fill." and fitz's "i must wonder if that was always what I was to you. only the catalyst?" both of them thinking the other can't possibly be satisfied with them, that they lack something fundamental that they can't offer for the other to be truly happy. but also both of them always wanting more—more of beloved, more of fitz's affection, yet feel as if they've given enough and can't possibly give more. and whenever they ARE given more, they refuse it as reality and think that it can't be true.
amber and the paragon
Bingtowners, totally unprompted: we’re nothing like those Six Duchies barbarians. We’ve got manners and talking ships and glass windows and women’s oppression and slavery and
wokeship traders
i read the divytown chapter of ship of destiny last night and am soooooooooooooo obsessed with wannabe pirates wannabe lovers brashen and althea. they just want a life together!! is that too much to ask for robin hobb???? oh.... yes...? okay yeah.... that's what i thought but i just wanted to check.
anyways my take on them!! they saw you from across the bar and absolutely hate your vibe (they're too busy being obsessed w each other rn sorry)
I know Robin Hobb was giggling to herself kicking her feet writing this entire interaction
Amber telling paragon she hears herself talking to her friend and knowing how he would respond and fitz wishing the fool is out there somewhere making toys like he would want to and missing him I’m going to jump.
that basement is not enough i need to feed him to the rain wild river
the one thing I'm sure of is that Kennit would have loved the Sims
