Liam Imagine
“I hate your goddam guts,” you say to Liam as you jerk your arm away from his grasp. He sighs his deep long sigh. It’s the sigh he uses when he knows a fight is upon him, and he doesn’t have the stamina to put one up. Hearing it only makes you angrier as you stomp away from him.
“C’mon, don’t be like that. You know nothing happened,” he says loudly as you march up the staircase, him following you.
“Do I? Because I wasn’t there,” you yell. You don’t turn to look at him, being that it would only make your state of being worse. You were livid because he had lied to you for the second time about still spending time with his ex-girlfriend Sophia. Liam tells you that he and she are just close acquaintances and that they’re meetings together are just friendly ones, but you don’t know what to think seeing that he had to lie about being around her. You wouldn’t have allowed him to see her if he had asked or had told you about it regardless. Sophia is his ex, his past. You feel like it should stay that way. Not to mention that she’s beautiful in every way. You can’t help but feel intimidated.
“You know I would never do anything like that to you, Y/N,” Liam shouts as he enters the bedroom you two share together right after you.
“Liam, I don’t like you being around her! I don’t know what could happen. And you might say you’d never do something like that, but maybe your feelings change when you’re around all of that,” you say kicking off your heels as hard as you can, mostly to get some of the rage out without actually hurting him or yourself. If anything, you’d want to hurt Sophia. But you would never do it, because there’s too much humanity inside of you. And sometimes you hate that you’re always a good person when others around you aren’t.
“Oh, so you don’t trust me? Sophia and I have been apart for three years! Three! I’ve spent the past three years with you! Falling in love with you, wanting to be near you, planning a future with you! Why would I want Sophia?’ he asks you.
You always hated how Liam could put his words together so quickly to make you seem like the bad guy, like you’re the one that wrecked things. And make you instantly regret doubting him, make you love him even more, make you believe that he truly does love you. But for some reason, this time it doesn’t work so fast.
“Oh, I don’t know. You’d want her because she’s beautiful. She’s…” Your anger is washed in blue, and you suddenly feel despondent. “She’s lovely. She’s gorgeous. She’s stunning, elegant, graceful. She’s everything I’m not.”
Your insecurity wins you over as you sit down on the bed, still not taking a look at him. Tears brim up around your eyes, but you hold them back, not wanting Liam to see how weak you are right now. You feel him sit down beside you, and you almost flinch away when he wraps you up in his arms. Instead, you just let him pull you close into his chest, where you can hear his beautiful heart beating.
“Y/N…If I was satisfied with all of that, we would still be together, Sophia and I. But I needed more than a pretty woman beside me. I needed someone I felt attached to, someone I knew I could spend the rest of my life with. And it’s not Sophia.”
Liam pauses, and an unintended tear slips down your cheek. You disregard it, paying it no attention as if it were never created by your pain and sadness and anger. “But then I found you,” he begins again, “and from the first few words that were exchanged between us, I knew that the woman I was looking for was you. You make me see things in a brighter light. You make me want to be a better man. You make me smile and you make me hurt when you’re away for too long and you make me feel better when you come back.
“When I hold you in my arms, I swear it’s like I’ve discovered Heaven on earth, and when I have to let you go, I feel parts of my heart crack open. When you smile, I feel like I’ve uncovered buried treasure, and when you cry, I feel like I haven’t tried hard enough to love you like you should be loved. I get goosebumps when you laugh and when you touch me. I still feel nervous when you come close. And I could go on forever about the way you make me feel. I’ve never felt this way with anyone. Not with Sophia, not anyone.
“You make me wanna live life as much as I can and settle down and start a family and be the best I can possibly be. Every day I wake up and I give my all…for you. Sophia never made me feel this way. She never will. Now, she might be beautiful, but you? You…you are so, so much more. You’re the picturesque definition of perfection. You’re intellectual, you’re facetious, you’re gentle, you are absolutely everything I’ve ever dreamt for. Sophia is no comparison. And, Y/N, believe me when I say that I love you with all of my heart. You are my true love.”
You finally look up into his sweet auburn eyes, and he smiles, making your insides melt. You’re so overcome with elation and exultation that you let the rest of your tears spill over. “You mean it?” you ask him in a raspy, small voice.
“Every single word, love,” Liam says gleaming at you, his hands squeezing your arms. “Do you feel the same?” You giggle a bit, feeling stupid for being so apprehensive. Of course Liam loves you. Of course he’d never do anything to hurt you. And of course you love him, too. You love him more than anything in this entire universe. He’s your best friend, you lover, your superhero, your motivator, your everything. You can count on him no matter what happens. Even when you feel like you’ve lost hope in him, his optimism in you is always stronger than ever. You know he deserves so much more than your petty arguments and bickering and accusations. And you plan on giving him more, being a better girlfriend.
“Yes, I do. I love you with everything I’ve got,” you say smiling at him. You lift your head and lightly place your lips on his creating a sugary kiss.
“I’m glad you said that, because I have something to tell you,” Liam says releasing you from his arms. The instant he does, you forget all about your commitment to stop doubting and begin fretting over what he could have to say. “I should tell you what I’ve been meeting Sophia for. See, I couldn’t exactly tell you, because it would ruin the surprise.”
“Surprise?” you ask a little confused. “What surprise?”
Liam doesn’t answer. He even lets his smile disappear a little as he stands up and crosses the room to the closet. You hear him rummage around a bit and you try to guess what he could be coming out with, what he had to lie to you about, what he needed Sophia’s assistance with.
He comes back out with a gift bag and sits down beside you in his previous seat. “Here you go. I hope you like it,” he says handing you the bag. You take it and look inside the bag, seeing a box enfolded in gift wrap. You shoot your eyes at Liam only to see him wearing a smirk. You can’t help but put one on yourself as you stick your hand inside of the bag and pull the box out.
You tear the wrapping paper off to reveal the box’s velvet exterior. A ring box. Your anxiety builds up as you pull the top open. You see two rings side-by-side; one for a man, one for a woman. They’re matching rings, the woman’s ring bearing an infinity sign in the middle of the loop and the man’s band in sterling silver with the same symbol engraved right in the median. You release the breath that you were holding, seeing that it’s not an engagement ring.
“The jeweler said that they’re supposed to be promise rings,” Liam says when he notices that you hadn’t said anything. The reason you hadn’t commented on the rings wasn’t because you were disappointed. It was just because you were still trying to figure out what they were for. “Sophia helped me pick them out. I wanted them to be perfect, so I took a bit longer looking around than I intended to, but when we saw these, it reminded me of you and I. Or should I say what I want us to be.”
“Forever. You want our love to be forever,” you whisper, overcome with intense feelings.
“Yeah. I wanted you to know that I want to be with you to infinity and beyond.” Liam smiles. You know him well enough to recognize the reference, and love him even more for using it. You take the woman ring and slip it onto your finger, smiling from ear to ear.
“Liam, I love this so much. Thank you,” you say.
“You’re welcome,” he says. He takes his ring and puts it onto his own finger. When it’s on, he flexes his fingers a little bit, and then takes your ring hand in his. “There. Now our love will officially last forever.”
You laugh. The notion makes you swoon. This is the most adorable, most thoughtful thing anyone had ever done for you, and knowing that Liam did it makes it ten times more special. There is always the chance that your love won’t last forever, and you know this, but forever seem like something easy for you to conquer with Liam. And there’s no reason to think about forever when you two have now together.
zayn imagine (part two)
...I come face to face with Zayn. He stands in the dim hallway of my apartment complex, his hands tucked into the front pockets of his black skinny jeans. He raises his eyebrows. “Hey. Were you expecting Niall?” he asks.
“No, uh...I just thought it was him. Surely wasn’t expecting you, though,” I reply. My heart pounds on the inside of my chest. It took everything in me not to let my words get caught in my throat.
“I’m sorry. May I come inside?” I stare at him debating whether or not I should let him in. I’m in a vulnerable state, and I don’t want to subject myself to any more pain. “C’mon, (Y/N). I just want to talk to you.”
The way he’s looking at me, I couldn’t possibly say no. I step aside and allow him entrance into my home. He comes inside and stands in the middle of the living room as I close the door. “Nice place,” he says.
“Thank you,” I say as I sit down on the couch. He follows suit and sits down beside me.
“So why did you think I was Niall? Does he come here often?” Zayn asks me. My first thought was to dismiss the question; he hasn’t been in my life in a year, and he has the audacity to be intrusive. But then I hear the hint of envy in his voice and decide to entertain it.
“After we broke it off, he and I became close,” I tell him truthfully. “We’re really good friends. I needed someone to lean on, and he was there for me.”
He nods his head and looks down at the floor, his lips tucked into his mouth. “So, you guys are like best mates now?”
I almost laugh. “Strictly…” I trail off. I love Niall, but my feelings for him are truly platonic, and vice versa. “Him and I are just friends.” His face lightens up as he nods once again. “Is this why you came over? To make sure I wasn’t dating your former bandmate?”
Zayn looks at me with a stunned expression. “No. I came to apologize for tonight. It...things just didn’t go well during our conversation.”
“Does your girlfriend know you’re here to do that? She must be getting very lonely without you,” I retort, angry at how my encounter with him panned out because of her.
“That’s not my girlfriend,” he snaps at me. I stare at him in surprise.
“But she said---”
“I know what she said, but she lied. She and I don’t even know each other that well.”
“Then what exactly is your connection to her? Are you guys dating?”
“Not exactly. I took her out for dinner on one occasion and we hooked up. But other than that, there’s nothing. I don’t even know how she found out about the party.”
It was my turn to nod at his statements. I’m relieved to know that him and her are nothing serious, but still, that doesn’t mean that they can’t be. “She’s trying to guarantee her spot as Zayn Malik’s girlfriend,” I laugh as I shake my head. Zayn stares at me smirking.
“You looked better than words tonight. I didn’t get a chance to tell you that,” he says to me.
“Thank you. You didn’t look half bad yourself,” I reply. I could feel my cheeks burning. A compliment from Zayn outweighs any compliment I get from anyone else. And I’m glad he noticed the way I looked.
“Thanks,” he laughs. We stare into each other’s eyes for a moment, the feeling of opia setting in. It feels as if he could see right through me, and it makes me feel so open for him. “If I’m completely honest with you, apologizing isn’t the only reason I came over.”
My heart skips a beat. I look at him with my mouth slightly ajar. I shake my head and look down at the floor, chuckling. “Why else did you come over, then?” I ask.
“I...I’m not over you, (Y/N).”
This is all I’ve ever wanted to hear him say ever since he broke up, but him saying it right here, right now, only makes me question if he even means it. “What do you mean you’re not over me?”
“I mean I’m still in love with you. I haven’t been able to get you off my mind since I left,” he says, sounding just like the climax of a cheesy chick flick. I just stare into his big brown eyes, not knowing what to believe, or even if this is actually happening.
He shifts in his seat. “Look, just listen. I know you probably don’t believe me, and if I were you, I wouldn’t believe me either. I pushed you away because I thought that I needed a whole new slate to start off my solo career. Truthfully, I thought you were going to hinder me, but in hindsight, I threw away my biggest supporter.” His talking becomes rushed. He makes arm gestures at me, just trying to get me to hear him out, trying to make me understand and believe. “I know I was gone for a year. I shut you out, I made it seem like you and I were never together. Part of that was because when I realized my mistake, I felt as if it was already too late to turn my decision around. I figured you were over it, you found someone new and you were just being low key about it, that you wouldn’t want me anymore. After accepting what I had done, I just decided to stay away out of bad judgment. But (Y/N), seeing you tonight, you being in front of me right now...I’ve never had more confidence than I do at this moment. I don’t want you to feel like I’m trying to force anything onto you, but I love you. I love you, and I never stopped. And correct me if I’m wrong, but I believe you still love me, too.”
His words swirl around my head like a cyclone, repeating themselves over and over again. I look at him with a pitiful smile, ecstatic to hear that Zayn never lost his love for me. “I do. I love you, Zayn. Never stopped. Could never move on,” I whisper to him, a big grin spreading across his pretty lips.
“(Y/N), I’m not saying we have to get back together, I don’t want to rush you. But...I just want to be in your life again. Your spirit, your energy, your love, your compassion...it’s what I’m lacking in my life. I miss it. I miss you. But I don’t want to be in your life if you don’t want me here, love.”
I laugh at his words. I know he doesn’t completely know my heart, but I do, and it says to grab on and never let go again. It says to fight for love when love is due. I cup his face with my hands, his cheeks soft against the rub of my thumbs. My eyes brim with water, knowing that this year without him was the hardest thing I have had to go through, and the prospect of having his love back with me was almost too much to handle. “Of course I do.” He sets his hands on top of mine.
“Can I kiss you?” Zayn asks in a delicate voice. I nod my head, and with that, his face slowly creeps towards mine until our lips finally touch. It’s faint, but to me, it feels like I am lifted off of Earth and taken to an extraterrestrial place, floating in a world with no gravity. With every lasting second, the kiss becomes harder and harder. I feel like a recovering addict taking a hit of the thing that controls them the most, and for me, that thing is love.
I begin tugging on his shirt, bringing him deeper into the kiss. I throw my leg over him and saddle him without thinking, placing my hands on the back of his neck, lightly scratching it. Zayn grips my hips, his lips tainted with passion and yearning. He bites my bottom lip, and it sends tingles throughout my entire body. His hands run up my waist and wrap around me, pulling me closer to him. He moves his lips from mine to my cheek, my jaw, then my neck. The sheer feeling of it makes me whimper. My loins were ablaze now, and I couldn’t help it any longer.
“Make love to me, Zayn,” I whisper in his ear. He looks up at me, the dim lighting in my living room hitting his face at an angelic angle. I place my hand on his jawline, stubble sticking my fingers in the process. He looks so beautiful as he smiles at me.
“I’ll do whatever you want me to do to you,” he whispers back. I give him a sly smirk with my plump lips. Leaning back away from him, I cross my arms and pull my nightshirt off and toss it to the floor. Zayn marvels at my bare chest as if it’s the first time he’s ever seen it, and it makes me feel powerful. I stare him square in the eyes.
“I want you to show me how much you’ve missed me. Show me how much you deserve my love.”
His touch travels down to my exposed thighs and kisses me in between my breasts. I can sense the want in every breath he takes. In a blink, he picks me up and sets me down in the place he was seated. Zayn stands in front of me, his body tall and lean. He follows suit and pulls his blazer and t-shirt off, letting them fall limply to the floor. The sight of all his tattoos drives me crazy with lust. I sit with my legs open wide, my hand placed in the middle part of my legs. I rub myself through my shorts and panties as Zayn unbuckles his belt. He notices. He licks his lips and grins at me, unbuttoning his pants in the process. Once the zipper comes down, he drops his pants and tosses them off along with his shoes. He now stands before me in his briefs, his manhood practically begging to come out.
I cross my legs to control myself. I then stand up and take his hand in mine. I lead him down the hall to my bedroom. The city lights glowing through the window provides us with all the light that we need. I seductively sit down on the edge of my bed with Zayn watching me tentatively. I stick my thumbs inside of my panties and pulled them down my legs along with the shorts. I sit before the love of my life and the man of my dreams, naked for him for the first time in a year. Naked for anyone for that matter. I slide back onto the bed, my forearms propping me up.
He places himself in between me, his mid touching mine. I feel him pressed up against my vagina, and I imagine what it will be like to have him inside of me once again. I shiver at the thought, warm sensations flowing through my body. Leaning on his elbows, Zayn’s hands rest on my breasts, his thumbs circling around my nipples. He kisses me on the jaw, slowly moving down to my neck, my chest, my stomach, squeezing my breasts all the while. I lay back and run my fingers through his messy hair. He nibbles at the skin on my hips, and I bite my bottom lip to keep from moaning.
Zayn makes it down to the middle of my legs. He pecks my lips lightly, then abruptly runs his tongue between them roughly, tasting all of my wetness. I yelp and gather some of his hair in a loose fist. He puts his thumbs on either side and pulls them open, exposing all of the lacquer pink. I sit myself up on one of my forearms so that I can observe what he’s doing. He places his mouth over my clit, and I can feel him swirl his tongue around it slowly. He then takes his index and middle finger and pushes them inside of me. The sensation to me almost feels foreign, but it makes my entire body lights up.
I bite my bottom lip and lay back down on my back, the feeling of euphoria being washed all over me. I close my eyes and allow myself to enjoy the feel of Zayn’s fingers going in and out of me. His tongue continues to tantalize my pearl, rubbing roughly against it. The stimulation of it all made me want more.
I feel myself get wetter with each pump, each gradually becoming faster and faster. He went from licking to nibbling on my clit. I lick my lips and smile to myself, anticipating what else there is to come, but I was in no rush. It had been so, so long since I felt Zayn’s touch. I wanted to savor every moment of it. Every kiss, every stroke...everything.
My one hand is placed on the back of his head, my fingers stringing themselves gently through his silky hair. My other hand sits on one of my breasts, circling around my nipple. I moan quietly to myself, relishing in every second of it. Zayn’s free hand runs up and down the side of my leg, his nails grazing lightly on my skin. Then I feel him slightly curve his fingers inside of me, hitting that one spot that always drives me mad.
I gasp at the suddenness of it. I push my hand down on his head, mad for more. I’m feeling things that I hadn’t felt in so long that I hardly knew what to do with myself. I breathe deeply into my lungs, my moans becoming a little louder. Zayn grips my thigh, then slowly pulls his fingers out of me. I look down at him, his eyes meeting with mine. His fingers are damp, and he puts them up to his mouth, licking all of me off of him. The sight of it made me yearn for him more than I already did.
Zayn wipes his mouth with his forearm after he’s done. He then stands to his feet, and pulls his briefs off of himself, never breaking our lustful eye contact. I can’t help but look down. Zayn was definitely more than equipped and ready to finish what he’s started tonight. He notices me staring. “You missed me?” he asks as a sly smirk creeps onto his lips.
“More than you know,” I say back. I grin, and he takes that as his queue to tower over me. I place both of my hands on either side of his face, studying his seductive brown eyes before his lips smash into mine. We kiss each other rough and deep, breathing each other in for dear life. His hands saunter all over my body, leaving a tingling sensation everywhere they went.
His hands stopped on the back of my thighs. He pushes them towards my chest while sitting himself up onto his knees. He takes his dick in his hand and strokes it while looking at me. I grab my sheets in between my fists, so excited that I can hardly contain it. Zayn leans into me just a little. Close enough for him to rub his tip around my clit. I hate that he’s teasing me. “Zayn,” I accidentally moan. I instantly bite my lip afterward.
He eyes me, one eyebrow raised. “Someone’s impatient,” he observes. And with that, I feel him push his shaft inside of me. The suddenness makes me gasp, but it doesn’t take away from any of the pleasure that I feel. Zayn slowly slides himself out, then in again. I shut my eyes and allow myself to feel every moment. With each thrust, he gets a little faster. We begin to feel like one; his body meshing into mine makes me feel more alive than I’ve ever felt.
I wrap my legs tightly around his waist, pulling his body closer to mine. He moves his head down until our lips touch. Zayn kisses me as deep as his strokes. My hands find my way onto his back, my nails digging into his skin. I want to leave my mark; I want others to know that he is once again mine, that our love never dies, that we were always meant to be.
He pulls his lips from mine and lets out a moan into my ear. I love it when he does. It’s my way of knowing that I’m doing everything right. “Fuck,” he mutters.
I smirk to myself, feeling proud. The sound of our bodies is like music to my ears, a melody I missed so much. Minutes go by like seconds. Zayn nourishes me with all kinds of feelings, some I didn’t even know I was able to feel. He reaches both of his hands up to the headboard, grabbing on tight. He keeps his stroke going, his muscles in his arms flexing. His sculpted body towering over me gave me all the more pleasure. Our eyes lock with each other, and the amount of lust and love between us is too much to begin to explain. He bites on his bottom lip hard. The sound of the headboard syncs with his strokes.
I decide it’s time for me to take control. I push him back while sitting myself up. Zayn eyes me with furrowed brows, sweat trickling down his forehead. I get closer and push him down onto his back by the end of the bed. His confusion turns into anticipation as I climb on top of him. He places his hands on my thighs, drawing tiny circles with his thumbs.
I look down at him, feeling mighty. All this time I’ve been without him, I could have easily moved on. Getting a man was no difficult feat. But my heart was always tied to Zayn, even after he broke it. My loyalty never wavered, even when there was nothing left to be loyal to. He had me on a string and didn’t even know it. I would, and still would, have done anything for him. I was submissive to Zayn. But now that he’s back, confessing his faults, it’s time for him to submit to me.
I take his manhood and my hand and begin to caress it. I feel it pulse within my grip, staring at him all the while. His eyes are so telling; I look in them, and all I see is mesmerization and love. The best part is that it’s not my own reflecting back at me. This man loves me the way I love him.
I get myself into position and slowly slide him into me. Zayn quietly moans to himself as I do so. I slowly move up and down on top of him, slightly winding my hips in the process. He watches me carefully with his lips folded into his mouth. I start to go faster, up until I’m bouncing on him. I let myself bask in the sexual thrill of it all. I moan out loud, rocking and grind on him as I tilt my head back with my eyes closed. I place my hands on his chest for support. Zayn grips my hips to assist me, my name leaving his lips in the process. It only makes me hotter.
I lean down closer to him and tighten my walls around him, wanting to drain his entire soul from his body. Zayn cups my face with his hands and pulls me even closer to him, our lips touching. He kisses me passionately as he begins to meet me halfway with his torso. The feeling of our bodies hitting each other with the same force doubles the amount of pleasure I’m already experiencing.
I can’t help but moan into our lip lock, all of it too much to bear, yet not enough at the same time. I move my head to the side of his, needing some space to catch my breath. He begins to plant kisses on my cheek and earlobe through my hair. He smooths his hands down my body and over my backside.
“I’ve missed you so much, baby,” he whispers as he smacks me on the ass. I smile to myself, pleased with how the cards ended up falling tonight.
“I’ve missed you, too,” I say into his ear. Zayn wraps his arms tightly around my back, hugging me to him like he never wanted to let go. And I never wanted him to. Not again.
I can feel myself getting to my peak, and I know his coming too by the way he’s moaning. I begin to give it my all, determined to make this the best he’s ever had. Our sweaty bodies slap together in unison over and over again. Then, Zayn pushes and holds his body to mine, and he lets out a loud wail while squeezing his eyes shut. He keeps me there like that for a moment, heavily breathing. His arms finally go limp, releasing me from his grasp. I sit up, stare at him in triumph, then collapse onto my back at the head of the bed.
Zayn moves so that we’re lying side by side. I turn my head towards him to see his eyes looking back into mine. He smiles at me as he shifts onto his side. “That was amazing,” he says to me.
“Yeah, it was,” I say back. “I see you still got it.” We laugh a little. He takes his hand and places it on the side of my face, rubbing my cheek with his thumb. I put my hand on top of his and scoot closer to him.
“I can’t believe I have you back,” Zayn says. “I want you to know that I love you. You know that, right? ”
“I know,” I assure him.
“No, for real, (Y/N). I love you. I meant everything I said earlier. I fucked up what we had before. I know that now. I’m probably not even deserving of you anymore. But I love you, and I want to be a better man for you than before if you’ll let me.”
I purse my lips and wrap my fingers around his hand. “I love you, too. So much. And because of that, you have all the time in the world to prove yourself to me now. Please don’t make a fool out of me, Zayn.”
“Never. I won’t make the same mistake twice,” he tells me. I silently sigh as a grin back at him. After an entire year, I finally feel at ease. I feel safe, whole, complete. My missing piece was returned to me tonight. And as my soulmate lays beside me just as in love with me as I am him, I can’t help but feel content.
I finally got my man back.

zayn imagine (part one)
“You look gorgeous,” Niall says as I step out of my room in the skin-tight sequin dress I bought earlier in the week. I sigh as I run my hands over my hips.
“You think so?” I ask him nervously. I absentmindedly bite at my bottom lip. Tonight is the night Harry is holding his party celebrating the release of his new album since the band split up. He invited all the old members: Niall, Louis, Liam, and Zayn, AKA my ex-boyfriend.
Zayn broke up with me a year after he left the band. He said that he just needed his space to truly find himself so that he could focus on where he wanted to go with his career, and leading me on for the ride would have just hurt me. Him focusing on his career would leave no time for me, and I understood where he was coming from, but that didn’t stop it from hurting like hell. Zayn was my first real boyfriend, my first true love, and without him, I feel lost.
Niall has been truly one of my biggest supporters when it came to the breakup between Zayn and I. He personally feels like Zayn and I were meant to be, and that he made a mistake when it came to leaving me. Since then, he’s been my best friend. And he out of all people knows how big this night is going to be not only for Harry but for me as well. It will be the first time I see Zayn ever since he broke up with me, and that is huge for me. I might have accepted the fact that Zayn was no longer in my life, but I never got over him.
“Trust me, (Y/N), you are absolutely stunning. When Zayn sees you tonight, he’ll realize what he’s been missing this past year,” Niall assures me as he stands up. I smile, as I’m a little relieved.
“You look good, too, Niall,” I say back. He’s wearing a nicely fitted suit with a solid blue tie. I think about how there’s probably going to be people dressed in their best, but I know for a fact that Harry will probably just be in some nice pants and a half buttoned-up blouse. I can only imagine what Zayn will be wearing. But with this dress and these heels, I expect him to do nothing less than drop dead at my splendor.
“Thanks, love,” he says while smiling. “So, are you ready to go?”
I grab my clutch and phone from off of the couch. “Yeah, let’s go.”
We ride in separate cars. Niall wanted me to ride with him. ‘The only way you’re getting home tonight is if it’s with me or Zayn,’ he said earlier in the night, but I just wanted to be cautious just in case things didn’t go my way. I follow Niall’s car, thinking about how things might turn out tonight. My goal is to try to convince Zayn he made a mistake leaving me, that I was the best thing to happen to him. But if that doesn’t happen, then I at least I want to finally receive closure. I feel like when he left me, it left a void in my heart that I wasn’t able to mend, so maybe tonight I’ll finally be able to fill it one way or the other.
When we get to the party, it is everything I’d imagine it would be coming from Harry. The venue is elegant, the people are pleasant, and everything else mixes in perfectly. Niall and I stroll through the crowd together side by side until Harry spots us. He stops his conversation with his friends to speak with us.
“Niall, (Y/N), I’m so glad you two could make it. You both look great,” Harry says, He slaps hands with Niall and then pulls me in for a tight hug. “I feel like it’s been ages since I’ve seen you last, (Y/N). I’ve missed you,” he tells me.
“Yeah, it’s been a while. I’ve missed you, too, Harry. Congratulations on your new album. I know you’ve worked hard on it.”
“Thank you so much, love. I hope you like it. The music playing throughout the night is actually the music from the album.”
I nod my head as I smile. I’m very proud and happy for Harry, but the only thing I can seem to think about is Zayn. I have the greatest urge to ask him if he’s here, but I don’t out of respect for Harry and his work. But it seems like he’s able to notice, anyway.
“Zayn’s here, you know. I hope that’s okay with you,” Harry says to me. I laugh from anxiousness.
“Nah, that’s cool. Besides, I wouldn’t have missed this for the world,” I say back.
“Plus, maybe when he sees her in this ensemble, he’ll fall head over heels for her again,” Niall chimes in.
“I don’t see why he wouldn’t! That dress is amazing on you,” Harry says. The hype makes me feel better.
“Thank you both,” I say, my cheeks probably visibly crimson.
Niall and Harry are spotted by some of their other old friends who pull them in for conversation, leaving me to myself. I walk around the party, saying hello to people from the former One Direction circle I got the chance to meet in the past. I engage in one conversation to the next, awkwardness in each one. I keep being met with the pitiful ‘Hi, (Y/N).’ You know, the one where they drag your name out, and they say it like that out of sympathy for whatever situation you’re going through. The people here who I know are also people Zayn know, people who rooted for our relationship, and people who feel weird about our breakup. Some of them are sure to stay clear of the mention of Zayn’s name, asking how I’ve been and what I’ve been up to since we’ve last met. Others seem to try to get their fill with questions like, ‘Don’t you feel weird with Zayn being here, too?’ or, ‘Have you found anyone else?’ It’s all utterly exhausting.
I eventually ditch the friendly chit chat and find the bar. I seat myself on one of the stools. I order myself a glass of champagne. I sip on it idly. I sit there for minutes on end, looking around until I stop and just stare. It’s him. It’s Zayn. But the feeling I get from seeing him for the first time in a year isn’t what I expected it to be, because he’s with another woman.
He doesn’t see me. Him and her are leaned against a wall together talking, She’s rubbing her hands over his chest, her breasts pressed against him. He looks down at her with his lips tucked into his mouth. Seeing him with her hurt more than I ever imagined seeing him in person with another woman would. I turn away and look down at the bar.
Of course, he would have brought a date to something like this. Of course, he would have moved on from me by now. I haven’t spoken to him since our split, but Niall would tell me when he got with another girl. There had only been two since me, but neither one lasted long. I thought that maybe since the relationships were so short, he never moved on from me and still had feelings. But seeing him like this...I feel so stupid. This attempt to get him back that I let Niall talk me into is futile. Zayn and I are done. I just have to accept it. And it only makes it worse that I am alone. Albeit his ability to even date again, I haven’t been able to do the same.
I sip on my champagne a little more, not sure what to do. For Harry’s sake, I might stay for another half an hour. But I can’t stay the entire night.
All of a sudden, I feel the presence of another person close behind me. I turned around to see a man dressed in a suit. I don’t recognize him. “Hello,” he says to me.
“Hi,” I say back.
“I don’t mean to bother you, but I saw you from across the room, and I just had to tell you that you look stunning,” he says. By the way he’s blatantly hitting on me, I can tell he either doesn’t know me or just doesn’t care. I grin.
“Thank you very much,” I tell him, not really up for much conversation, especially with a stranger.
“What’s someone like you doing at a party like this all by yourself?” he asks me.
“I’m not alone. I’m with my boyfriend,” I lie to him.
“Who is he? Maybe I know him.”
I stare at him, at a loss for words. He looks back, waiting for an answer that I’m not sure I’m able to give him. “Hey, babe, I didn’t mean to be so long,” someone says from to the left of me. I turn to see that it was Zayn.
I look at him in surprise, but I’m sure to smile to not throw off the other guy. Zayn stands beside me and places his hand on the crook of my back. My breath hitches as I feel the hairs on my neck stand. The guy knows exactly who Zayn is, and he takes a few steps back knowing that he can’t compete with him. Zayn looks the guy square in the eyes, their gaze set with each other.
“I was just telling your girlfriend how nice she looks tonight,” the guy says to him.
“Yeah, she does, but I’m sure she knows that just as well as you do,” he says back. The guy purses his lips together and nods. He bids us both a good night before he leaves.
Zayn steps in front of me, and it’s the first time in such a long time I’m seeing him up close and personal. He’s changed; I didn’t expect anything less of that. He’s wearing a loose, black v-neck with matching black jeans. Though his attire is casual, he dressed it up with an equally black blazer. His hair is longer, mixed with a few blonde highlights. He looks tougher, more ragged. That doesn’t negate the fact that he looks just as handsome as the day I met him.
I try not to let him see that I’m so pleased to see him. “Thank you for that, Zayn, but you didn’t have to do it.”
“No problem, (Y/N). And I wanted to. You looked uncomfortable.” The way he says my name almost makes me shiver. “It’s been a long time.”
“Yeah, it has. You needed your space. You made sure I wasn’t able to invade it any longer.” I cross my legs and clear my throat, unable to look away from his eyes. I missed them for so long. And even though I miss him, I’m still bitter about him pushing me away. After he left, he made it a point for me not to be in his life anymore.
He looks down at the floor and rubs his neck like he always does when he’s put in an uncomfortable place. “How have you been?” he asks me, ignoring the last few sentences I said to him.
“I’ve been making it. Been doing good. You?”
“Same. Just working on---”
“Zayn!” The same woman he was with earlier comes towards us and wraps her arms around him. “What’s taking you so long? I was starting to miss you over there,” she says in his ear. He’s visibly embarrassed.
“I just came over to talk to one of my old friends (Y/N),” he says as he gestures at me.
The way he calls me just an “old friend” makes my heart sink, but judging by the way the woman is looking at me, she must know that I’m anything but. My relationship with Zayn was never one that was secret. The media knew, and pictures of him and I would be everywhere.
“Oh, hello. It’s so nice to meet you. Zayn’s never mentioned you,” she says. A thorny silence filled the air between the three of us. I purse my lips and nod, Zayn looking more sheepish than ever.
“That’s fine. I’m sure you have better things to talk about than old friends of Zayn’s,” I say back, trying to smile. He looks at me and rubs his neck.
“Well, my boyfriend here has lots of stories.”
I tuck my lips inside my mouth and nod once again. Zayn silently sighs to himself as I finish the rest of my champagne and stand to my feet.
“I’m glad to hear that,” I say. Another silence falls among us.
“So are you enjoying the night so far?” Zayn asks me, finally breaking the tension.
“Uh, yeah, everything is so nice. It’s really good to see everyone again. And Harry’s music? I love the vibe,” I answer him, trying to lighten to mood by smiling.
The girl presses her lips together into a smirk as she looks at me. “You’re so right, (Y/N). And you must have come with a fine date looking that.” She leans in towards me and says, “I think to come to these kinds of things alone are so pathetic.”
I laugh out of embarrassment. “I actually am here without a date.” She bites her bottom lip and furrows her eyebrows together, Zayn goes back to rubbing his neck, and I couldn’t feel more uncomfortable if I tried. “I mean, I came with Niall, but I wouldn’t exactly call him a date.”
“Well, why not? He’s a cutie. You two would complement each other well,” she says, her smile widening with each word. Zayn’s jaw tenses up. The discomfort between the three of us was beginning to be too much to bear. I needed to get out of this trainwreck of a conversation.
“Oh, no,” I laugh as I shake my head, my embarrassment growing by the second. “I could never. Niall is like a brother to me.”
“Hm, if you say,” she utters. Every moment of this chat, every word to leave her mouth was just an attack on me. It was so evident.
“Yeah. Well, it was nice seeing you both. I have to go. I’ll leave you two to yourselves,” I say as I get up to leave.
“(Y/N), wait,” Zayn says, but I pay him no mind as I walk as fast as I can to the exit. The people around me all look like a blur. Tears swell up in my eyes, but I force myself to suppress them. The valet brings my car around to the front, and I drive myself back to my apartment. Once there, I undress, put on sleeping clothes, and take off my makeup. I call Niall and tell him that I was no longer there and that we would talk tomorrow about everything that happened. Right now I just want to be alone and forget about what happened for the time being.
I lay back in my bed and stare at the ceiling. The moment I saw Zayn tonight keeps flashing in my mind. The thought of it all makes me want to cry until I can’t produce tears anymore. Niall never mentioned Zayn had a new girlfriend, so I don’t know if he knew, or if they haven’t been together long, but I suppose it doesn’t matter. He’s moved on more than once. I just hate myself for not being able to give myself the same luxury.
I take my pillow and bury my face in it. Why can’t I let him go? It’s been a year. Why is it that I’d rather be alone if I’m not with him? I miss him so much. I truly thought that tonight might be a new beginning for him and I. I have to accept that the void in my heart will never be filled.
I hear knocks at my apartment door. It’s late at night, and the only person I can think of to come unannounced like this is Niall. I trod to my living room and opened my door.
“Niall, I thought I said---”
I come face to face with Zayn.
