It could be possible that Deryn has an intersex variation. maybe a chromosomal one or one that becomes apparent after puberty. Or one that isn't apparent. Yes, I think that may be so.

...I'm trying real hard not to think of Deryn and Alek as swingers. But I keep thinking of them being undercover, and having to seduce people to gain their confidence...

Deryn can still walk after her knee broke, but it’s still more vulnerable than if would be if she never broke it and she has a noticeable limp. She tends to walk with a cane just so as not to exacerbate it when not climbing. If it breaks again, it will not mend as well.

Did anybody actually buy that thing with Malone in Goliath? Because Alek such a goody two-shoes, I don't see how *anyone* could've been tricked for the slightest nanosecond.

Does Zaven know his daughter has "The Gay"? He's a pretty chill guy so I'm thinking he'd be/is cool with it even in light of the whole "Christian in th 1910's" thing. I bet Nene already knows. Hell, I bet Nene knew before Lilit knew.

Deryn and Alek's relationship is not one of completely placid waters. But they *talk* everything out (in part thanks to the promise), and because they do it well, they do well together.

I have this headcanon that Alek is a talented poet but he refuses to share his works to anyone but Deryn. Even then, he sends them anonymously to her by mail (but she ends up figuring out it’s him anyway). But he doesn’t write romantic poems. He writes the kind that make people want to cry, filled with metaphors and similies and all that: hard to dicipher but still raw emotion. They’re his way of coping with things.
