CYBERPUNK 2077 | Judy.
“V, I just wanted you to know that…I’m happy. For the first time in my life.”
I can only draw Judy in comfy oversized clothes (aka she steals all of them from V)
OMG everyone I know the ACTUAL story behind the gif this time! Yes, it’s in Australia– that’s a big angry goanna that wandered into a popular restaurant. All the Australians in the vicinity went OH FUCK NO and cleared off, because goannas are mean. The waitress you see there is a French exchange student, who was quoted as saying something to the effect of “I thought it was a weird ugly dog” and had no idea it was a reptile that wanted to rip her arms off. She’s been hailed as a hero who saved diners.
It’s amazing what power “not knowing” has.
The thing I especially love about this is this is a pretty dangerous animal, except she managed to defeat it by just fucking grabbing it by the tail and walking too quickly for it to turn around. Once again the animal kingdom is thwarted because we evolved opposable thumbs, long limbs, and reckless bravery.
weird, ugly dog thwarted by foreign exchange student and polished floors
my take-home lesson here is that nobody in france has ever first-hand seen a dog
Abby - The Last of Us Part II
The Last of Us Part II's ending concept arts
We were so near from the final result
The Last of Us Part II is GOTY! 😎
“Abby, you won’t believe what I just heard…”
thinkin about what it would’ve been like if abby and nora’s characters were switched……
no okay i really want to talk about this because i think it’s super interesting, but there is literally no reason abby needed to be a white character. her and nora could’ve switched positions and it wouldn’t have changed any aspect of the story. the reason abby is white is because (and this just my thoughts) she needed to be white in order for the game to be successful, but ONLY because the gaming industry is so heavily dominated by white men and racism
think about it, the game is already receiving so much hate partly because of abby’s character design but mostly because of the fact that she killed joel, a character that’s literally made to cater towards the white straight majority of the gaming industry. now imagine if abby had been black instead? i can’t even imagine how much backlash the game would’ve received, having a black female character kill off one of the most beloved white male characters ever. abby needed to be white or else the game never would’ve gotten off its feet, it would’ve been hit with way too much backlash for it to ever gain traction.
now i want to make it clear i don’t think this is a good thing. lord knows i wish there were more poc in games and there’s no denying that tlou2 has an issue with the way it treats its characters of color. what i’m pointing out has to do with the gaming industry as a whole. we need to start seeing better representation in games (and also just like more diversity in creative spaces? those two go hand in hand) so that we can actually start getting these poc as main characters without having to worry about games being drowned in backlash. and gamer bros need to stop being so. like. gross
(While I don’t speak for everyone here are my two cents)
Abby actually did have an earlier character design portraying her as black/darker-skinned.

And to be honest, I really liked it. She looked mysterious, yet hardened and like a lot of people in the comments mention, looked like she could’ve been Marlene’s daughter. I made a post a while ago about how Marlene’s death should’ve played a bigger role in TLOU2, how the leader of the Fireflies didn’t seem to garner enough importance as an npc surgeon for some reason. It could’ve drawn more on Ellie’s relationship with her and her mother Anna, complicating her quest for revenge, it would’ve been so unique. Even her alternate origin was pretty interesting, as it was also connected with Joel’s Hunter past. If she was one of Joel’s victims in the old days, someone he left alive because he couldn’t kill a little girl (and maybe saw Sarah in her) would’ve also been an interesting plot point.
Why her design was changed? At first I thought it was to avoid controversy with Laura Bailey, who voiced Nadine Ross, another black video game character, but this design was changed pretty early as the rest of the concept art portrays her a white. Maybe Abby would’ve gotten more hate, maybe she wouldn’t’ve. The thing is ND keeps claiming the game oversteps boundaries and challenges perspectives, yet their main characters looked similar enough to be mistaken as relatives.
ND is not an exception, however, this is extremely common in character design. Characters with really interesting and unique designs often have a similar final product:
There are dozens of more examples in these threads:https://twitter.com/pix_the_wad/status/1272247496790749190 https://twitter.com/rainbow67648/status/1288413110391496706
But ND is not the first nor will it likely be the last form of media to reject ideas like this due to marketability. It’s a thing that’s been going on for years and will continue to if no one makes an effort to change it.
