Mega Milestone Monster: The Leviathan

The Jabberwock was the First Of The Tane, and the most powerful of the originals… But it has since been supplanted. Closing out Theme Week 16: A Midsummer Night’s Theme is our Mega Milestone Monster, the Leviathan, a creature of such terrifying strength that no one Eldest is allowed to control it. To prompt the Leviathan to rise from the deepest waters of the First World, several of the Eldest must agree upon its release and appoint it a target. To do anything else would be unthinkable, idiotic treason. This keeps the Leviathan from simply wiping out the whole of the First World on the whims of one offended Eldest, and keeps the titan from ever being seen more than once every three or four millennia. The Leviathan is not a creature sent upon an individual or small group as the lesser Tane often are, it is a destroyer of entire cities, countries, or civilizations. It even has a few worlds on its record, leaving the First World to claim its bounties with its 3/day Plane Shift.

Fittingly enough, it’s also the most peaceful of the Tane, spending all its time swimming through the vast oceans of the First World and composing beautiful songs that can be heard through the water for miles around, dangerous only to schools of fish. The Leviathan is completely unique, designed from the get-go to be impossibly strong but also as peaceful as it is powerful, unless explicitly ordered by the Eldest. If you’re wondering why the designers of the other Tane didn’t hammer that bit of programming into their own creations, it’s because the allegiances between the Eldest were fluid and frequently broken, and control of the Leviathan would only occur if enough of them worked together to direct it Think of this massive, hundred-eyed whale like a WMD that requires at least four different special key-turns to work.

The Hollower Class was originally a commission I did for @arcane-ethereality​, based on some early musings about an umbramancer or shadow-magic fighter. The Idea evolved a lot from it’s original roots, and is heavily based on the idea of great power at great cost; Trading Sanity for functionally unlimited power. Be wary, as this class is somewhat experimental. It is designed to balance using levels of debilitating madness rather than through the traditional mechanical limits. Every level of madness you gain will inflict a mechanical effect on your character, so It can be very complex to keep track of, and is recommended only for Veteran players.

At long last, and to celebrate reaching upwards of 1,000 followers on the new blog, here are the Myxapia - My take on a race of intelligent slimes!

I wanted to do something different with these guys, so rather than just convert creatures form the monster manual, I decided to draw a lot of inspiration from real world slime-molds and superorganisms like ant colonies, which I have a sort of fascination with. Myxapia are actually colonies of millions of amoeba-like slime-cells that function together as one organism. Or if the science thing isn’t your style, they are just magic goo, but that’s boring. The sub-races are based more specifically on slime-creatures form the MM, specifically Black Puddings, Mimics, and Grey Oozes.

Bard Subclasses

It’s time for bards! Two of the three colleges presented here are new designs, while the third is a previously published one packaged with the new, as I did with my fighter subclasses two weeks ago.

The College of Pestilence was born from a desire of my own to use the exhaustion mechanics more actively. Is it balanced? I don’t know, and I honestly don’t really care that much. What matters is that this college allows you to play something entirely unique, both mechanically and philosophically. The Plague Doctor feature was made so that the DM will be pushed to explore what diseases exist in the setting, while the player is encouraged to learn about them. It organically causes the setting to become that much deeper.

The College of the Divine was an obvious design for me. Many classes already have divine options, and bard deserves one as well. Mechanically, the first two features of this college are pretty straightforward. You get some extra healing and the use of channel divinity. The 14th-level feature is something entirely new. I thought it would be fun to have a feature that actually gives some mechanical weight to the religions of D&D. Terrifying the enemies of your god is a really cool concept, so why not go the whole way and make an ability that does just that?

The College of the Herald has been released previously on this blog, and is presented here without any real changes. The college already felt clearly defined and fully realised. I can share that the proficiency with polearms was heavily inspired by my own bard PC from 4E, who acquired a songblade glaive. I also really liked the idea of the herald having a banner with them, which could be tied to a polearm.

The optional rules presented here at the end are intended to give bards unique ways to “play their class” so to say, outside of combat. I’m a huge supporter of features that don’t necessarily affect combat, and because the base game is severely lacking in these, I added these optional rules.

Like the previous Forest Assets, Tavern Assets, and Snowy Assets before it (all linked in the Urban pack above), this pack is made free to use for all and because they’re all at the same battle map scale, they’re all compatible with each other! In addition to huge number of different roof combinations and detailing pieces, I also worked to include a number of different other urban set pieces that might help you set the scene a little more convincingly.

Please share your feedback and things that you may want to see in future iterations of asset packs that look to cover the urban theme and share back out any maps you may be making with these new assets! Hope you guys enjoy!

Row, row, row your boat.

Been working on expanding my list of transport battlemaps, featuring vehicles one might often use when preparing a long journey from point A to B. This month I focused on naval transport, starting with small boats like a rowboat, a canoe and a fisherman’s ship slowly building up to larger ships like Schooners and Galleons.

Having one of these at your disposal is especially great when you are playing a campaign where your players have a ship as their actual home base, going from island to island. Played a campaign like that in the past, and even though it ended up being a pretty short lived campaign, I’ve always loved the concept and thought about doing one again in the future.

The first three battlemaps in a series of six Dwarven Ruin interconnected battlemaps. Each one of the six is also connected by a theme of portals, meaning that each one features a doorway or portal of some kind to a map beyond. The idea was to create a massive battlemap DM’s could use for a single adventure or have separate battlemaps they could use as the precursor for an adventure beyond.

TOP LEFT

This map features chambers were once used as a stables of some sort in this Dwarven Outpost. They would keep their animals inside eight rooms connected by the central area and ride into battle going through an underground passage that leads to the gate in the map below.

There is also a main gate in the lower central area, where they kept their most powerful beast(s). This door could also be used as a gateway to any dungeon below.

BOTTOM LEFT

This map features an entrance inside a cave that takes you into the dwarven complex below. I wanted to have a gate here that looked imposing, one you could use for any ominous dungeon.

BOTTOM CENTER

Underneath the Dwarven complex is also a system of caves, where hidden in the center is a mysterious portal stone of some sort. This could be used as a gateway to another dimension or perhaps part of a demonic ritual. If you were to play this as a single map it is also perfect for explaining how the outpost once got overrun. Perhaps the dwarves who lived here were unaware of the significance of the portal stone and were one day overrun by creatures from a place beyond.

PART 2 of The Abandoned Dwarven Outpost – or Dwarven Ruins – a massive battlemap I drew, consisting out of six smaller, interconnected, battlemaps one can either use as separate maps or as one massive map. The basic idea is that one could either use the separate maps as gateways to a dungeon beyond, the beginning point of an underground adventure, or as a single map for an adventure into the ruins of this Dwarven Outpost.

The story behind the Dwarven Outpost was that it was built on top of a mine filled with precious metals, located near an active volcanic source. Hence the lava in some parts of the map. Making sure they would be able to protect the mining operation of this precious metal, the Dwarven built a fortress inside the mountain.

Starting in the bottom left corner of the map, you can see the entrance of the complex, a massive stone gateway carved in the shape of a Dwarven head. Once guarded from an overlook they build on top of the gateway. There is also an alternative rout around the mountain, they had closed off with a stone wall. In case of an attack, Dwarven infantry would man the walls and gateway while the cavalry mounted up in the stables build at the end of the hallway leading into the complex (top left corner), ready to ride out and meet their attackers head on. (Alternatively I had also designed an opening in the ceiling of the central courtyard of the stables, where flying mounts could make their exit).

The dwarves had also built a tomb near the first part of the complex, where fallen soldiers could be buried with honor.

All the way in the far right is both the mine itself and a fortress where the Dwarves had made their last stand. Only the first level of the fortress itself is accessible, the stairwell leading to the living quarters below has collapsed. (I might get to making a second level at one point, for all the areas that are missing, but for now I just use it as is).

Now in the lower center of the map is also a system of caves one could access. It was here that the Dwarves had discovered a mysterious portal stone, while working on expanding their complex. The exact spot where they eventually found their doom.

In my adventure the ruins are currently held by a pack of marauding orcs, who have taken control over the outpost long after it was found abandoned. They have no clue of what actually happened here, and the dangers hiding inside the mountain, as they were simply happy to find such a prized encampment.
