“Well look who was paying attention in class for once-”
“I always pay attention?” He raised a brow questionably as he paused. “Except today...”
The smile she was fighting won over, as she looked at him. "I’m glad my words could be of use to you. I’ve only ever really kept them to myself… until now. I just never really knew if I could convince myself to believe them you know? Everything is easier said than done, especially something like setting yourself free.” Tessa sighed, gazing up at the stars for a moment before looking back at him, “But I do see a different look in your eye. Maybe I succeeded in encouraging you to take that leap?”
Liam shot down, staring at his feet for a change while the stars hung high above him. While the words provoked a sense of encouragement in him, he wasn’t overly convinced if he was brave enough to do it. Maybe Tessa was. “It depends on how badly you want to set yourself free.” He responded to her earlier comment. “And you’ve given me an incentive, but... I’m too scared to finalise a decision about it soon.”
“Alright then, we have a deal.”
“What days work best for you?”

“No,” he said with a sigh. “No, don’t apologise. I’m sorry for… y’know, snapping at you just now.” Louis shook his head slightly, but stopped, as the mere action made him want to puke. “No thanks. I’m fine. It’s all good. Don’t worry ‘bout me.”
“It’s okay, I understand.” Liam gave a light nod. “Are you sure you’re okay? Asides whatever physical pain you’re experiencing, is there anything bothering you?”
“Bloody hell. Est-ce trop demander pour un peu de paix et de calme autour d'ici? I thought people were suppose to be quiet in the library.”
“Apparemment, il est.”
“I think I drank a little too much last night and I don’t need you breathing down my neck about it. So, no offense, but could you just leave me the fuck alone right now? ” He pauses for a moment, before adding, “Please and thank you.”
“Okay, um– I’m really sorry. I was going to offer you coffee, but uh yeah, I can leave...” Liam almost about to spin on his soles, before he offered, “Can I at least get you some water first?”
“Sure I would, but I’m such a crappy student that you’ll probably run away after one session.”
“I’ve dealt with students a lot worse, I think we’ll both manage.”
A hint of humor “When you should be sleeping?”
“I couldn’t choose sleep over a chance to explore and wonder about the beauty and intricate aspects to astronomy. That, and I can’t sleep.”
As he spoke, she wondered why he was being so supportive and kind. He barely knew her– how could he know what she was capable of? If only he knew about all the terrible things she’d done to get what she wanted– perhaps then he wouldn’t have such a look on his face. Tessa turned to face him as he spoke, showing she was fully listening. He spoke wisely– and he most definitely spoke like a writer. She wanted to tell him that, but he’d probably just deny it. “Perhaps you’re right, maybe the people close to me would really want my happiness they’d let me go. You know how the saying goes– if you love something, set it free. I think personally to love myself, I need to set myself free, no matter how cheesy that may sound.” Tessa wondered if there was anything she could say to convince Liam that things weren’t so bad– that the world may be scary but throwing himself into it could be incredibly beneficial to someone as confined as him. From what he was telling her at least. “Look at you, echoing my advice– perhaps you should follow some of it yourself,” she smiled comfortingly, “You’ll never know if you never try.”
“– No.” Liam shook his head, a beam curling on his lips. Everything she had said to him made so much sense but those words, ‘to set herself free’, nothing gave him more clarity. He always doubted himself, the potential he had – especially when everyone including his friends and teachers have made it obvious to him – and his endless melancholy was brought by how much he loathed himself for neglecting the things that brought comfort to his life. He needed to set himself free if he were to ever be happy. Was it worth losing his family over? “That’s the best thing I’ve heard all night,” in his life, actually, “And you’ve said a lot of brilliant things tonight.”
“Ah no! Don’t say that!” She playfully let her hands push against her ears to stop hearing the marriage idea. “I know you can Liam, you’d beat him up and put him in the Hospital Wing for sure.” She smiled that she wouldn’t have to go too into detail again. “Yes! What do I bring this time then?”
“I’ve got the guns to prove it.” He gestured to his biceps. “Bring yourself and your interest, I’ve got everything else covered.”
She takes a few steps forward to meet him, “What are we gazing at?”
“Stars, mostly. I usually come out here more than often around this time to look at them.”
Melanda took a few more steps forward, meeting him at the railing, although she didn’t move to lean on it like he had done. Her eyes followed his finger, and she was left looking up at the stars. “It is beautiful, isn’t it?” Melanda said, although a bit of a questioning tone leaked through her words.
“Yeah,” Liam agreed, before he glanced back at Melanda while she was still staring up at the sky. “It is pretty beautiful.” His eyes met the view again, the white dimmer lights that he could make of. “And fascinating mostly. In London, you could barely see the stars because of the city lights but here, we’ve got a perfect view. You could almost see them clearly to make a constellation. Stars are so much larger to us in comparison that it almost makes me glad to be irrelevant among them, and every defining point that wanders the universe outside earth.”
“Too many naughty dreams keeping you up?” she teased, taking a swig from one of the bottles of firewhiskey she’d brought with her. “Yeah, totally. I always bring alcohol when I plan on knuckling down and tackling an assessment piece.”
Liam rolled his eyes at the teasing remark, dismissing it after. “I meant if you were here to contemplate on, and as you said, the old mystery of life?”
“Cause it’s not.” She said with a sly smile, “want some?”
“No, I’m good.” He shook his head lightly, scratching the nape of his neck. “Why are you drinking?”
“And what’s that suppose to mean?”
“No, no! I didn’t mean for that to sound patronising– I wasn’t doubting your ability to comprehend my question.”
She’s quiet for a minute. Reading people may not be her specialty, in fact, it’s a weak spot of Jenna’s. But something seems off about Liam. She feels a strong need to right what she’s done. He seems hallowly upset, much more than he could be about a book. Of course, she thinks, she’s probably wrong. Maybe she just wants to get something right. Maybe she needs it. “I think it’s wordless, just an odd wand movement. I do believe I remember it, though. May I?”
“Of course,” Liam handed Jenna his book, a more genuine beam tugging his lips upward.
