good morning to the beaten and the damned only
I feel like I need to share this because idk if Europeans are familiar with the presence of Aldi in the US, but at least especially in my area they’ve been growing a lot recently. Like Aldi bought out some local failing grocery chains where I live (Louisiana) and have opened Aldis in all these somewhat rural communities and small towns, which for the record I’m fine with
But as a result of this they are advertising a lot more in my area and also in many cases, the people in these areas have never been confronted with Aldi or any European grocery store. So the ads that Aldi is pushing out to its new US customer base feature a cowboy shopping at Aldi who is explaining to new Aldi customers how Aldi works. Like this cowboy is explaining you gotta put a quarter in the shopping cart and why there are very little name brands. A cowboy is how they want to reach their American customer base. They gave us a cowboy
when James Baldwin said I can’t be a pessimist because I’m alive
when James Baldwin said to be a pessimist means that you have agreed that human life is an academic matter. So I am forced to be an optimist. I am forced to believe that we can survive whatever we must survive.
Ok i know this is silly but do you know how fucked up and accurate this is?
Idk if it’s common knowledge how a nuclear energy is generated. But on the assumption it’s not, I had to learn a little in Environmental science A levels.
I shit you not, they are harnessing the power of splitting the fucking atom just to boil some water. It’s just a high tech kettle. When you boil your kettle you are doing the same thing these people are using Uranium for.
All these crazy energy generation methods and almost all of them revolve around boiling water to turn a turbine.
It PISSES ME OFF. WHY ISNT IT COOLER??? WHERES THE LIGHTNING!!
Hear me out:
Earth is not just a Terrestrial World; it’s an Exotic Terrestrial: a Water World.
Water is weird, ok? Everything else that’s anywhere close to its molecular weight is very much vaporous gas at similar conditions to water’s triple point. It’s weirdly easy to make carry an electrical charge (we call it an acid or a base when it’s doing this). It’s polarized as fuck, so it’s squirrely, infiltrating all kinds of stuff you normally think of as being solid, like metal and stone.
Water bonds to itself really well, so the transition from liquid or solid to gas, and back, involves a really profound change in volume.
The Water Cycle, whereby Water goes from solid to liquid to gas in all kinda directions, runs a lot of our geologic and mineral cycles, like the nitrogen and carbon and silicone ones. Plate tectonics is partially enabled by lubrication from the ocean infiltrating the earth’s crust.
It kinda… makes sense? That we’d have Water-based technology? As inhabitants of a Water World? From a world-building standpoint I mean.
We hacked one of the driving forces of our world, and use that power to run our civilization.
Just. Just saying.
This is literally what people are talking about when they say AI will be used to mainstream widely held bigotry. LLMs are trained on frequency and probability -> straight relationships are more well represented in the dataset -> straight pronouns and terms become the "correct" normal.
This is a form of backdoor bigotry from both normative facts (there are more straight than gay relationships) and well represented bigoted beliefs (men are superior to women).
Combine this with the mass of people inclined to believe (and being encouraged to believe) that if AI says and does something it must be correct
This may be the best Pride merch I've seen from a major corporation.
Levi's said yes, actually. Assless chaps and a biker vest. Happy Pride.
And the assless chaps sold out on June 1.
They also specifically contacted members of the leather community, used them as models iirc, and donated $100k to Outright International. They talked the talk and walked the walk and put their money on it too. I don't really care that I can't afford and don't want this merch, I love to see my community getting the respect it deserves. Levi's said, "We make jeans which gays wear lots of jeans? Oh leather daddies? Let's call them."
I think Levi's donates to Outreach International every year too, as well as sponsoring pride events and other community support. They were offering Same Sex domestic partner benefits to employees in the 90s, and have been very public about their support for pro-lgbt legislation all through the 2000s.
So, you know, a giant corporation that walks the walk pretty consistently.
dracula after bdsm (bat dracula sex monster): and now i vill perform the afterscare
we used to turn the tv on and just watch whatever was on there
Yes, it was frequently The Simpsons.
it’s sooo funny when rude customers encounter employees who can deny them service for the first time.
i was working at a little cafe where I could deny service over bad behavior, harassment etc. & mask mandates had just ended a week before & already people were being weird about me still wearing mine—an N95, the kind shaped kinda like a duckbill.
so this man walked in, looked at me sooo scathingly, laughed at me, and said “damn. never known a woman to choose…practicality over looks.”
And I just said, “oh. you can go, you’re not getting a drink.” And he said, “what???”
I said, “sir, you just walked in at 6 am & called women impractical and me ugly in one sentence.”
And he was so astonished he didn’t even argue he just turned around and left 💀🙏🏻 it was like he suddenly became self aware
One summer I was running ferry rides across a lake so people could see the waterfalls without walking 6 miles when a guy snapped my bra strap as he was boarding the boat. So i immediately threw him off, he started yelling for my manager, my boss cheerfully informed him that, yeah, she’s the captain of the boat and she can kick off anyone she wants. He goes to storm off, looks expectantly at his girlfriend, and she just goes, “Well, I’M not walking six miles, Michael! I’ll meet you back at the car!” and sits right back down!!!!
The expression on his face when he was told that he couldn’t get on the boat, then immediately told that his girlfriend was ditching him? PRICELESS. he just blinked at her and then stormed off like a child. I gave her a free hat and was like maybe rethink this relationship…….
i once had this fucker come up to order a beer. while i pour it he shows me the wanky fucking chemical structure tattoo on his arm and he’s like “hey. you know what this is” i was like “nah sorry” (never cared abt chemistry in school, plus having to look at a some rando’s pretentious tattoo gives me the douche chills). he decides to respond with “heh. you must not read many books”
i immediately stop pouring his beer. i reply: “heh. you must not want this beer.” thirsty boy immediately starts groveling like a worm “please please no i do want the beer im sorry im sorry” believe me when i say it was one of the most pathetic things ive ever witnessed
gotta love people immediately backpedaling when they realise that there are Consequences To Being Mean
I genuinely believe that part of why it has become so normalized to be openly callous and evil in politics is that customer service culture has trained affluent people that they can treat everyone they consider beneath them however they want and still be treated kindly.

Tired of being witness to this conversation.
I kinda crammed multiple issues into one here, because it's a big topic. But this is equally about people who try to scare others out of T because they think T effects are ugly and people who genuinely enjoy T effects and think you're not fit for T if you only want some of them.
There's a big pressure in some trans spaces to enjoy the idea of looking like a mythical "normal dude". Like if your transition goal would stand out in a line of extras for a family comedy, you're doing it wrong. And whenever someone says "I want to go on T, but don't want more body hair", for example, these people treat it like an insult to the practice.
I guess, what I'm saying is less "some people think T will make you ugly" and more "some people think T will take away your chances at a more artificial and ethereal type of beauty and you're supposed to love that".
In minds of many trans people, cis men are allowed more diversity of visual expression, and in part it is because their existence is seen more like a blank slate. They're often not perceived as actively having a gender that femininity or androgyny could be in conflict with. And nobody thinks about them as "people on testosterone", even though, technically, in some ways, they are.
Meanwhile trans men and other people who may want T are seen as taking active masculinizing steps. And an attempt to deviate from typical masculine body goals confuses and enrages some people. It's seen as a waste of T, as appropriation of the "true trans" experience.
Obligatory disclaimer that this applies only to some online spaces, not the society as a whole. But it's a thing that exists.
@cats-go-bump-in-the-night idk which version of this post you commented on, but this one might give more context.
It really varies. I personally don't want to look masculine. My transition goals look more like this
What I need out of T is lower voice, sharper face features, figure reshaping. But there are other things, like body hair, smell change, differences in physical arousal patterns, that either aren't important or are something that creates an inconvenience. I'm not just aiming to look like an abstract guy, doesn't matter the details, I have a very specific image in mind.
developing audio software. i fix a bug that's been bothering me for a while. doing so i also lay down important infrastructure for later features. i feel accomplished with my tangible progress. ctrl-f "todo". 146 hits
i need to keep going until i at least have something to show off on here. so far it makes music. i can add tracks and place notes and edit the instruments and play the songs. everything i need for filters is in place. parameter automation and audio samples not in yet but already prototyped in some older project so not too daunting. i've put so much work into this already and it is so cool but it is so not showable yet

Listen to me. Listen to me. Listen to me. Listen to me.
I know there is a lot of discourse (tm) around this right now but listen to me
sometimes you do just have to lie to children.
If, when my toddler is, you know, toddling around saying “mama? Big ball?”
If I were lean down and say “unfortunately the big beach ball for some reason fills you with such an unadulterated rage that is beyond human comprehension that you scream until you pass out, so mama had to remove the beach ball from the premises until you can better regulate your emotions” she would simply stare at me like I had 3 heads full of equal betrayal.
So, for now, instead “big ball went night night!”
Please understand when I say “removed the ball from the premises” I mean I popped it in a fit of exhausted confusion. I murdered the beach ball.
See I’ve lied to you all too and it was better this way.
you can’t just leave this in the tags etc.
You can’t be funnier then me on my own posts, I’m in tears from laughter
