In early 2013, I was offered a “magic pill” that was supposed to make me lose weight. It was supposed to make me perfect.
Throughout the years all i ever heard was how much weight I needed to lose and how I wasn't as good as the other models. I was called fat, cow, round around the edges, not good enough, etc... My body was referred to as a problem 99% of the time. They made me weak. They made me HATE myself. I hated my own body so terribly that I don't think it can ever forget all the harm i’ve caused it.
After I was encouraged by a professional in the modelling industry to take laxatives, I gave in. One pill a week turned into one pill a day. From there it became 2 a day until finally i found myself washing down a pill every time I put food in my mouth; which was ALL THE TIME. Aside from pills, I would binge eat every time i felt a certain way. Whether i was happy, sad, nervous, cold... I’d eat when i’d feel. And once the laxatives did not seem good enough, i began to fast. I would go home on weekends at times and spend a good 3 days without any food, just water. And when that got old, i began to purge.
In 2014, I was officially diagnosed with an eating disorder, Bulimia Nervosa.
[ “Bulimia Nervosa, also known as simply bulimia, is an eating disorder characterized by binge eating followed by purging. Binge eating refers to eating a large amount of food in a short amount of time. Purging refers to the attempts to get rid of the food consumed. This may be done by vomiting or taking laxatives.” ] (Wikipedia)
After being diagnosed, I ran. I refused to believe it was true. I was not ready to face it and i sure as hell was not ready to quit harming myself. I made sure that my family and friends did not pick up on my problem, even though my mother and sister found my stash of pills once. I remember lying to their faces, knowing they didn't believe it for a second.
Fast forward to 2016, I was exhausted. I hated myself more than ever. I felt big and ugly and simply disgusting. I had no one to turn to. I refused to hurt my family and I did not want to burden my friends.
BUT (and believe me when I say this) angels are real. I was sent one to guide me out of this dark hole I’d dug myself into.
As of April 2016, I began my official recovery battle. I am now around 7 months clean from all eating disorder symptoms and fighting to nurse my body back to health.
This journey is a tough one, which is why i decided to document it.
As my mother always told me, “Where there is a will, there is a way”.
