Dylan Thomas, The Collected Poems of Dylan Thomas: The New Centenary Edition; from ‘The Fight’, Frivolous is my hate
TEXT ID: Frivolous is my hate, Singed with bestial remorse Of unfulfilment of desired force, And lust of tearing late; Now could I raise Her dead, dark body to my own And hear the joyous rustle of her bone And in her eyes see deathly blaze; Now could I wake To passion after death, and taste The rapture of her hating, tear the waste Of body. Break, her dead, dark body, break.
~Feeding Fire to the Dead ~
The realm of the dead is often depicted as a cold dark place, sometimes even being wet. Making it's denizens cool fluid beings craving fire and the warmth of vitality. Chthonic entities, in my experience, are very reactive to warming offerings. Such as candles, fire, coffee, liquor, and spices. These types of gifts excite the spirits of the underworld, allowing their old bones to thaw from being in cold chthonic waters.
You have to be careful feeding fire to the dead. While it is excellent at bringing movement to slumbering beings, it can also lead the dead to cause chaos. Acting wild and unruly for the inexperienced conjurer. Which is why in traditions like Quimbanda you'll find firey spirits such as Exu and Pomba Gira are given these types of firery offerings and mediums will consume alcohol and tobacco, but are warned against over indulgence as to not give the spirit control over you. There is a line to ride when it comes to exciting spirits with hot offerings, as too much fire and the magician could get burned.
Cooling offerings are often preferable when working with the dead for this very reason. Especially with wild/unknown dead you are working with, because over excitement could be dangerous when you're unfamiliar with the being you're speaking with. These offerings take the form of milk, honey, wine, and sometimes coins. You see these types of offerings used frequently in the PGM when working with the dead, and other rarer ingredients get used inconjunction when working with divinities. These cooling offerings call the spirit forward without inciting them too much, and can also be paried with hot offerings to temper spirit.
This is why im my personal practice with my local dead I tend to shy away from hot offerings, and focus more on giving cooling gifts such as coins, milk, and sometimes honey. Only when I really want excitement and quick action do I lean towards feeding my spirits of the dead hotter offerings.
Do you have any particular powerful ritual approaches to binding someone from doing harm to another?Think someone harming their spouse in an abusive relationship. I've been led to believe that breaking up relationships can have negative repercussions
Absolutely. But I wish to urge caution with regards to what I’m about to say.
We can bind individuals to keep them from performing specific acts, but we cannot fundamentally change who they are as a person. In other words: an abuser will remain an abuser, binding or not. There is an underlying psychological need or drive beneath their actions - a craving for control or power - which no amount of binding will ever change. Keeping them from performing a specific set of actions won’t change that drive, and may just escalate their behavior. Someone who was emotionally abusive may become physically abusive; someone who was physically abusive may find they can’t target their normal target, so they might throw things around the house and break them… Or go off and pick a fight with someone else entirely.
But they will not become magically better people because they have been bound. They are abusers, and short of a near-death experience or years of honest therapy (which they won’t do, because lying is part of their pattern of behavior), they will remain that way.
I mean that very seriously. I’ve known people who were in abusive relationships, and thought that if they just bound the individual from a specific action, it would cause their act to clean up. It did not; the abuser just escalated, targeted their kids, etc.
But while we cannot alter their behavior, we can alter who they can and cannot interact with. In other words: we can excise them from the lives of their victims. (And after they’re excised, we can curse them into oblivion. But that would be another response entirely.)
Saturnian Binding of Poppets Against Malign Motherfuckers:
First, you need a link to the individual you are binding. A piece of hair nail clippings, an item of clothing that was worn by them, a picture of the individual, some poetry they wrote (I once got to bind a guy that was writing creepy letters to a female friend, and who would include his own blood on said letters - it was the best link one can ask for). The better the link, the more potent the binding.
Next make or get a doll to represent the person you will be binding. You can make one from wax, or clay, or you can just head to the nearest store that has dolls and buy one that fits the person.
Once you have these two items, procure a bowl of water (if you can visit a Catholic church and make off with some holy water - all the better, if not, regular water will be fine). Also get some black string or thread.
On a Saturday, in the hour of Saturn (Lunarium’s planetary hours calculator can help out if you don’t know how to calculate the hours by hand; remember the default time on it is for London, so alter it to your own timezone when making plans), set up space. Cast a circle, or banish, or put down a circle of salt. Whatever works for you.
Now take the link, and the poppet and combine them. Cut a hole in the chest and place the link inside, or tie the link to the poppet with some of the black string. Next, baptize the poppet in the bowl of water in the name of the individual you are about to bind. “I name you X, and baptize you in the name of [X].”
The baptism of the poppet can be done traditionally - that is, in the name of God and Christ, or we can take the ‘diabolic’ route and baptize it in the name of Lucifer (and if you’re feeling traditionally witchy, Diana and Lucifer work well together).
Next, recite a Psalm over the poppet. I recommend Psalm 7: 6 - 9:
“Exsurge Domine in ira tua exaltare in finibus inimicorum meorum et exsurge Domine Deus meus in praecepto quod mandasti
Et synagoga populorum circumdabit te et propter hanc in altum regredere
Dominus iudicat populos iudica me Domine secundum iustitiam meam et secundum innocentiam meam super me
Consummetur nequitia peccatorum et diriges iustum et scrutans corda et renes Deus.”
Or:
“Arise, Lord, in your anger;rise up against the rage of my enemies. Awake, my God; decree justice.Let the assembled peoples gather around you, while you sit enthroned over them on high.Let the Lord judge the peoples.Vindicate me, Lord, according to my righteousness, according to my integrity, O Most High.Bring to an end the violence of the wicked and make the righteous secure—you, the righteous God who probes minds and hearts.”
If you have done the Baptism traditionally, then just recite the Psalm as is. If you’ve taken a more Diabolic approach, replace ‘Deus’ (Lord) or God with “Lucifer” (etc.) in the Psalm recital.
After that you’ve ‘primed’ and 'readied’ the Poppet. Next comes the full on binding: taking the string, bind the hands:
“I bind these hands that NN cannot take action against (myself and the person affected by the abuser).”
Bind the feet:
“I bind the feet that NN may not move to approach (myself and the person affected by the abuser)..”
Bind the mouth:
“I bind the mouth that NN may not speak against (myself and the person affected by the abuser).”
Bind the ears:
“I bind the ears that NN may not hear of (myself and the person affected by the abuser).”Bind the eyes:
“I bind the eyes that NN may not see (myself and the person affected by the abuser).”
Finish the binding:
“In the name of God (or Lucifer, etc.) and Saturn, may NN be bound from taking any and all actions against (myself and the person affected by the abuser). May they be cut off, not to know the solace of friendship and love from those they have abused.”
Next, wrap that thing in tinfoil, or have a box that is entirely black with the Seal and Kamea of Saturn on the front and back with mirrors lining the interior, and place it inside. Drop it in a body of water; not moving water, mind you, as that will cleanse your link and break your poppet. Still water - like a lake - is best. Otherwise, bury it. If you want to be really nasty, bury it beneath one of the Nightshades so that any malicious intent that seeps out from the poppet (as it is an effective 'double’ for the individual) gets eaten up by the poisonous plant.
I mentioned 'myself and the individual effected by the abuse’ because occasionally you will bind someone, and they will know that you have taken actions against them. They may not be able to explain it, but they’ll be sure that you’ve done something. And they might decide to come after you. As such, blinding them and negating their ability to notice your presence is something to keep in mind.
I hope this helps.

Counter charmes against these and all other witchcrafts, in the saieng also whereof witches are vexed, &c. ERuctavit cor meum verbum bonum, dicam cuncta opera mea regi. ◊ Otherwise: Domine labia, mea aperies, & os meum annunciabit veritatem. ◊ Otherwise: Contere brachia iniqui rei, & lingua maligna subvertetur (Scot 1973: 211)
A charme to drive away spirits that haunt a house. Hang in everie of the four corners of your house this sentence written upon virgin parchment; Omnis Spiritus laudet Dominum: Mosen habent & prophetas:Exsurgat Deus et dissipentur inimicie jus (Scot 1973: 199).
For Slander or Witchcraft. Art thou slandered, or thy head, flesh, limb, send it back home to the false tongues, thus: ††† Take off the shirt, and put it on wrong side out, put the two thumbs at the pit of the stomach, and carry them around under the ribs as far as to the hips. Do this three times, carefully and devoutly (Brown 1904: 108).
To drive away Ghosts, or Spirits that haunt a house. This is a curious secret, and I think never before made public, or privately practised but by a few. To do this, take the wool that grows between the two eyes of a black sheep, burnt to powder, and after it has been steeped a night and a day in man’s urine, mix this with the powder of nightshade, or wake Robin, an herb so called, boil them in a quarter of a pint of Aqua Vitæ; sprinkle the walls of the chamber you fancy is haunted with it, and no disturbance will happen if you turn your face when you go to repose to the eastward, when in bed, and say your prayers (Witchcraft Detected 1824: 50).
This to be carried about one for the prevention of Witchcraft, &c. These misfortunes generally happen under the power of the moon, who (as ancients hold) is the favourer of magic, or enchantment, take the opposite planet to her in allaying her force this way, which is Jupiter, write his character thus ♃ on a piece of parchment, and add to it the following characters that are the signs of the Zodiack, viz. ♍ ♎ ♏ and this number, 1, 3, 2, 5, 7, 1—1, 1—7, 1—4th; after this, set down the number of the figurative letters in your name make, wrap it up in as small a compass as you can, and sowing it up in a piece of black silk that has been steeped in juice of vervine, hang it about your neck when the moon changes, and you will be sure from any danger of this nature if you lead a good life (Witchcraft Detected 1824: 51).
To find out a Witch, and prevent and cure mischief wrought by charms or witchcraft. One principal way is, to nail a horse-shoe at the inside of the outermost threshold of your house, and so you shall be sure no witch shall have power to enter thereinto. And if you mark it, you shall find that rule observed in many country houses. Otherwise, let this triumphant title be written crossways in every corner of the house thus: Jesus + Nasarenus + Rex + Judreorum +. Memorandum. You may join herewithall the name of the Virgin Mary, or of the four Evangelists; or Verbum caro factum est. Otherwise, in some countries they nail a wolf’s head to the door. Otherwise, they hang scilla (which is a root, or rather in this place garlic) in the roof of the house, for to keep away witches and spirits; and so they do Alicium [alyssum] also. Otherwise, a perfume made of the gall of a black dog, and his blood besmeared on the posts and walls of the house, driveth out of the doors both devils and witches. Otherwise, the house where herba betonica is sown, is free from all mischief. Otherwise, it is not unknown, that the Romish church allowed and used the smoke of sulphur to drive spirits out of their houses, as they did frankincense and water hallowed. Otherwise, Apuleius saith that Mercury gave to Ulysses, when he came near to the Inchantress Circe, an herb called verbascum, which, in English is called mullein, or tapsus barbatus, or longwort, and that preserved him from the enchantments. Otherwise, Pliny and Homer both do say, that the herb called moly, is excellent against enchantments (Witchcraft Detected 1824: 62).
TO DESTROY THE POWER OF A WITCH. TAKE three small-necked stone jars: place in each the liver of a frog stuck full of new pins, and the heart of a toad stuck full of thorns from the holy thorn bush. Cork and seal each jar. Bury in three different churchyard paths seven inches from the surface and seven feet from the porch. While in the act of burying each jar repeat the Lord’s prayer backwards. As the hearts and livers decay so will the witch’s power vanish. After performing this ceremony no witch can have any power over the operator (Hewett 1900: 74).
TO FRUSTRATE THE POWER OF THE BLACK WITCH. TAKE a cast horse shoe, nail it over the front door, points upwards. While nailing it up chant in monotone the following: So as the fire do melt the wax And wind blows smoke away, So in the presence of the Lord The wicked shall decay, The wicked shall decay. – Amen (Hewett 1900: 68).

mx. gauger i need an anti-venom. ive cut my ex out of my life but his hold on me wont stop. recently he’s been sitting on the edges of my social circle, making up horrible stories about things i would never, ever do to others, trying to drive my friends away and kill my support group. i want it to stop. please. i try to live my life as kind and accountable as possible and he’s doing evything he can to paint me as the ‘crazy ex gf’ stereotype. its been a year. let me live. i am the real me.
I have discussed the Threefold Law in several previous articles but it’s never had its own post before. Most people get the wrong idea about
I was discussing the Wiccan Threefold Law with a friend and making the comparison to Luke 6:38. Then I found this article and the source of the law. The common interpretation is incorrect. As the article concludes, it is not a statement that when you give, you receive back Threefold; but rather that when somebody gives something to you, the witch should give back Threefold. There isn't a direct Biblical analogue to this and I find it all the more wonderful an idea.

“The Goddess falls in love with Herself, drawing forth her own emanation, which takes on a life of its own. Love of self for self is the creative force of the universe. Desire is the primal energy, and that energy is erotic: the attraction of lover to beloved, of planet to star, the lust of electron for proton. Love is the glue that holds the world together.”

Watching people give advice on how to avoid lung infections and house fires from burning incense and candles and being told not to tell other people what to do.
Queen, your ancestors' lungs are crying
Here's what you're going to do, queen. Go down to your local shop and buy 1 herb/spice. Read the ingredients on the back of that spice packet and research them. Draw up a basic list of correspondences and folklore. If it's a herb, do that as well. Buy that one herb/spice and go home, put it on your altar. Recite Psalm 104 as it describes various forces that can be invoked through the Lord.
Give that herb water and a candle. Now ask it to reveal its nature to you. Ask it how it can help you and how it can work.
When that's done, ask the plant for a sigil or make one.
You'll soon discover that this one plant has a myriad of uses. You can work with it using the sigil or the herb. You'll find out what it likes and what it doesn't like. Repeat this.
You'll soon have an arsenal of maybe two or three herbs you trust with your essentials. Maybe two herbs each, hell, you might even find a herb that covers all your areas that you can call on.
You'll also find that some herbs have better uses. Some herbs are Watery and don't respond well to fire, so using them in incense and candles doesn't work well because the fiery element works against them. Some are better in baths and some are better in incense.
The hill I will die on in the year of Our Lord 2025 is that "The Three Fold Law" was never actually a thing and Raymond Buckland pulled it out of his ass because he lacked reading comprehension.
You're certainly not the only one to share that opinion (Shocker: There Is No Universal Threefold Law in Wicca). I don't believe its 100% Buckland just making things up, but I very much agree it is a misunderstanding of the source material.
The full quote from High Magic's Aid (Ch 17 pg 188):
"Learn, in Witchcraft, thou must ever return triple. As I scourge thee, so thou must scourge me, but triple, where I gave thee three strokes, give nine, where seven, give twenty-one, where nine, give twenty-seven, where twenty-one, give sixty-three. (For this is the joke in witchcraft, the witch knows, though the initiate does not, that she will get three times what she gave, so she does not strike hard.)...Thou hast obeyed the law. But mark well when thou receivest good, so equally art thou bound to return good threefold."
High Magic's Aid was written with the intention of being a book one could provie a seeker to see their interest, though something that can easily be denied as a simple fictional novel. Gerald Gardner mixed it with genuine folklore, but also his own imagination. Of course, it does contain elements inspired from his experiences in the occult and the New Forest Coven; however, it is far from a guide for practicing witchcraft.
These different traditions are very coven based and will have differences between them, even within the same lineage. Some might find truth in such things, but there are others that could easily disregard any of this. It just really depends.
The more harmful thing is when folks treat it as a universal aspect, applying it to anything and everything. And, I often find that those individuals use it as a moral high ground to fuel their own egos.
If I remember correctly, the exact wording is first found in Buckland's big blue book, which he published after he really parted away from paricipating in Gardnerian craft to focus more on his own brand of Wicca.
To me, it always felt like one interpretation from a coven/individual that spread like wildfire and taken into an extreme. I wonder if part of that could be because of what happens when religious/spiritual beliefs leave the area of their origin and become a snap-shot in time of that belief - being more restorationalist vs letting the belief naturally evolve and change.
I WILL BULLY TRANSPHOBES ON THE INTERNET IN THE NAME OF JESUS.
*not bullying, because that's repeated abuse of a power dynamic. This is speaking truth to power, actually.
How many workings you got going on?
