Rhymes, Action
I was doing an action rhyme during story time
[ ♪ the itsy bitsy spider ♪ ]
when I glanced out the window and saw a patron running from the building
[ ♪ climbed up the waterspout ♪ ]
with one of the library’s shopping baskets in his hand.
[ ♪ down came the rain and washed the spider out ♪ ]
I then saw our security guard run out the front door after him,
[ ♪ out came the sun and dried up all the rain ♪ ]
motioning and shouting to the thief
[ ♪ and the itsy bitsy spider climbed up the spout again ♪ ]
who then put the basket over his head and pedaled away.
I didn’t miss a beat.
Happy Mental Health Awareness Month! Here are some cute animals to remind you that you are great and to please practice self-care!
Meet Kids Author Carnival Isaiah Campbell, author of The Troubles of Johnny Cannon and the upcoming The Struggles of Johnny Cannon (Oct 2015)!
ABOUT THE BOOK
“Johnny Cannon’s got problems. Money is scarce. Martha Macker, the girl he likes, barely knows he’s alive. His best friend Willie is pretty great, but he also happens to be a black kid—which is not exactly acceptable in Cullman, Alabama. His big brother Tommy went to war and vanished. His Pa may be committing treason in their backyard. And just when it seems like things couldn’t get worse, an old family friend—or maybe enemy—appears and shakes everything up. How’s a kid like Johnny supposed to get himself and his family out of a mess that’s stickier than molasses and twice as tangled as a spiderweb?”

ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Isaiah Campbell was born and bred in Texas, and spent his childhood reading a blend of Dickens, Dumas, and Stan Lee. He dreamed his whole life of becoming a writer. And also of being bitten by a radioactive spider. Unfortunately, only one dream has panned out. For fifteen years he taught and coached students in writing and the arts before he finally took his own advice and wrote The Troubles of Johnny Cannon and The Struggles of Johnny Cannon. He lives in Philadelphia with his wife, three children, and his sanity, although that may be moving out soon. He occasionally searches the classifieds for the bulk sale of spiders and uranium but hasn’t had any luck yet. Find him online at IsaiahCampbell.com and on Twitter.
Such a good read! I just finished it recently.
A MADNESS SO DISCREET Giveaway and A List of Reasons You Might Be Crazy
My lovely publisher, HarperCollins, has posted 10 copies of A MADNESS SO DISCREET for giveaway on Goodreads! Definitely check that out if you’re interested.
Likewise, I discovered a list of reasons for incarceration in an insane asylum from the log books of the West Virginia Hospital for the Insane, spanning the years 1864 to 1889. It’s easy to see that you didn’t necessarily have to be truly insane in order to be whisked away. In a lot of cases, an insane asylum was a convenient location for inconvenient people.
See if you spot yourself in here.
First of all, book giveaway from one of the coolest people we’ve ever met (and the book is amazing, trust us.)
Secondly, that list is….we have no words. Pretty scary stuff.
Tips for Cultivating Calmness
1. Try and develop a calm morning ritual instead of starting the day off in a stressful rush.
2. Notice how you tend to automatically respond to a stressful or irritating person or event.
3. Decide to not take things personally; be the kind of person who it’s hard to offend.
4. Develop an attitude of gratitude – and decide to be thankful for the little things in life.
5. Develop healthy ways of coping with stress (as stress is an inevitable part of life.)
6. Single task instead of multitasking (as it leads to fewer mistakes in the end.)
7. Make more time for quiet and reduce the constant noise.

The Book Thief → Travelling Book Project Edition
In March 2014 I sent out this book, along with two others, to be read and written in by people all over Australia. This was the result. It is beautiful and wonderful and I will be forever grateful to everyone who participated. This is my favourite copy of The Book Thief now.
