This makes me sick.
Last week, the country was riveted by the story of young Diane Tran, a high school junior age 17, who was tossed in jail for a night because she was missing too much school.
The reason her case attracted so much attention? Tran missed those days of schoolâor arrived lateâdue to exhaustion. She worked two jobs to help support her siblings. Her parents had split and moved out of town. She became, in essence, a poster-girl for both the recession and for the criminalization of youth. Even those local newscasters expected to be dispassionate were moved to say their âhearts went outâ to this girl.
One of Tranâs employers is a wedding planning business, which she assists and whose owners house her with her parents out of town. The other is a full-time job at a dry cleaning store. Her third job, then, is going to school, where she is enrolled in several AP and honors classes, but missed 18 days. After a previous warning, a judge decided that a night in jail would teach her a lesson. He didnât see why people were kicking up such a fuss. âA little stay in the jail for one night is not a death sentence,â the judge told the same local news channel.
But then thousands of people around the world read the headline variations on âhonors student goes to jailâ and began expressing their supportâwith their voices and their wallets, signing a petition and contributing to a fund for Tran.
At last, the judge in the case agreed todismiss the contempt charges he had leveled at Tran. News sources reported that with paperwork, she can have her record expunged.
But none of these reprieves happened until Tran had already spent the night in jail.

I donât know if itâs always been that way, or if itâs the way I see things, or if itâs something that Iâm just becoming aware of right now, but I believe itâs profoundly immoral.
And the thing is, itâs a load-bearing pillar in the Conservative mindset, right? Conservatives who self-identify as religious, but completely disregard the teachings of Christ, who â according to the Bible theyâre always quoting (as if it begins and ends with Leviticus) â wanted everyone to treat others with love and compassion.
I canât believe that, in 2012, this country is so unenlightened that there is anyone who thinks itâs okay to put a child in jail for any non-violent offense, even for one night.

You know how the people who are freaking out about more non-white babies than white babies are often the same people who are pushing all the laws against reproductive rights? People of color are disproportionately affected by laws that make abortion and birth control harder to obtain because of all the other racist bullshit (as in, income disparities etc.) HENCE the people who are terrified of being "overrun" with non-white babies are making that "problem" "worse".

I love the feel of their scruffy faces and lightly calloused hands against yours. I love the dimples in their backs, the muscles bustling under the skin. I love their tattoos and their freckles and their scars. I love their height and their strength. I love the Vâs on their hips and the slight in their steps. I love their deep, gravelly voices and their stubbornness. I love the way they look in three piece suits, I love them in jeans and t-shirts. I love when they feel like naked means everything but their socks, and I love when those smiles tickle the corners of their mouths because theyâre thinking about someone they love. I love how their jaws clench when theyâre trying to suppress their rage. I love it when they lift you off your feet in a hug, when they nibble on the nape of your neck. I love their scrappiness, their softness, their unpredictability and their stability. I love when they play video games; when they read books; when they play basketball; when they answer your phone call with âhey, babeâ; when they pet their cats; when they talk to their dogs in high pitched voices; when they hold babies; and when they sit on the other end of the couch with your feet in their lap and tickle your soles every time you let your guard down. I love their loyalty. I love their differences and similarities. I love that there are good ones and âbadâ ones and in between ones and that finding the right one for you can be a struggle but is usually damn well worth it in the end.Â
I just really love them, and I felt like saying so. So I did.Â

Is why all of these mothers are bashing on each other for choosing differently then they are.
Formula feeding is JUST as good as breastfeeding, being circumcised will NOT effect someoneâs entire life, and cloth diapers do the SAME thing disposable diapers do.
Opinions are just thoughts, studies are not always accurate, and convinient for one person is not always convinient for another person.

I'm just going to stick with the breastfeeding thing, because it's really not that simple.
Formula is a perfectly valid choice. Formula is a great choice. There are great reasons for choosing formula, sometimes you need to use formula, etc. etc. etc.
Breastfeeding is not exactly the same as formula. I maintain that breastmilk is better for your child. HOWEVER, that is not the same thing as saying you're a bad mother for using formula. Everything else being equal, breastfeeding is better. Unfortunately, everything else is not always equal.
Also, there's an education problem that people in the know are keen to correct, simply to better inform women and empower them to make their own choices. For example, sometimes people end up with formula because they're misinformed about breastfeeding--as in, there are things you need to do to, for example, get enough milk flow to properly nourish your baby. If you don't know how to do it, your milk could dry up--and if you wanted to breastfeed, it's unfortunate.
Some people are keen to help women who want to breastfeed. I don't know any of the specifics of what the OP is referring to, but if you have a problem with someone stating medical facts (breastmilk is better, all else being equal) and/or doing their best to educate women who want to breastfeed but are having trouble, well, then, have fun with that.
p.s. I agree with you on the cloth diapers vs. disposable. My mom put me in cloth diapers, and let me assure you that my ass is indistinguishable from any other adult who wore disposable (of course, this is not accounting for allergies, etc. My nephew is allergic to certain generic-brand diapers).
So much debating about circumcision between moms on my dash. Personally, if my baby is a boy, he will be circumcised. Not for religious reasons, but for hygienic reasons, and because not doing so these days seemsâŠweird and kind of gross.
Jeez though, shouldnât it be a personal choice for the parents of the child to make?
Yeah, never mind the child himself. It's totally up to his parents. It's a personal decision whether or not to perform a permanent and medically unnecessary procedure on your unwitting child who lacks the ability to consent.
[Medically necessary circumcisions exempt from my opinion, of course. I'm pretty sure that most of the ones performed in the U.S. are not medically necessary.]
