I've seen a couple of posts from the Lawlight side of DN Tumblr recently talking about ghost!L haunting Light, and rather than derail any of that by adding on I'm just gonna shove this thought in its own post...

In a scenario where L is haunting Light and is a real ghost, not just Light's trauma hallucination, then an additional factor besides the impact on Light is that that's setting up one hell of a fight over whose job it really is to follow Light around and supernaturally bother him. Ryuk is going to be there like "wtf humans shouldn't even be able to come back when they're dead, and also do you mind, I was here first..." (Only documented case in history of a shinigami being the one to call in an exorcist. XD)

...of course, alternatively, there's the possibility that the shinigami are just plain wrong about humans going to nothingness when they die, but they don't know they're wrong because for some reason shinigami can't see ghosts. The story gets a lot darker if Light is swearing he's being haunted and Ryuk is like "look, that's not possible, can't happen, also I didn't see anything", because Ryuk is usually Light's reliable second pair of eyes and normally can see more than he can. Light would end up being forced to conclusions like "well either Ryuk is gaslighting me, or one of us needs our eyesight checked, or I'm actually going mad..."

One of my favorite things about lawlight is how L is the person who knows Light the best, but this is framed as something sinister. The fear and loss of privacy Light experiences during the Kira investigation intersects so neatly with the idea that Light is someone who fundamentally lives in fear of being known.

L puts cameras in Light’s bedroom, locks him up in solitary confinement, handcuffs him to his side. Light is dehumanized, inspected. And L knows that Light is Kira but he also knows how Light interacts with his family, what he looks like when he’s sleeping, and how his well-mannered facade cracks when he loses his patience and punches L in the face.

L knows that Light looks at porn magazines with an uncomfortable clinical gaze, he knows that Light is queer, he knows that Light is not the perfect son, that Light is selfish and flawed and weak and not a god at all but a human being

and maybe deep down Light doesn’t want to be worshipped; he wants to be loved but to be loved is to be known and he’s so fucking scared of being known. The closest thing he experiences to intimacy is an attempt to destroy him

People sleep on the sheer hilarity potential of a post canon au where Kira got caught and isn't being killed because L loves him too much. Imagine this wonderful vision:

Light, constantly fuming about his perfect world being impossible now that he's caught, while also cuddling with L every night in bed. This doesn't stop him from plotting his downfall but he does have to admit the downfall in question almost never includes L's death anymore, since he might be misguided but he also sees the issues with the system and surely he just needs a little push in the right direction-

Misa, who basically tripped into a throuple with the pervert but funny detective and her gay boyfriend, just enjoying her life observing her 2 boyfriends like a soap opera she can personally involve herself in, eventually getting close to L as well cause it started as a way to get as close as possible to light but somewhere along the way she just accepted that L wasn't so bad after all

L, who expected none of this when he took the Kira case, and is now living the bisexual dream at the low low cost of having to release public statements occasionally about how the kiras are still contained and he's still alive and unswayed by their manipulations (this is a paper thin excuse, because everyone but the ones most vulnerable to propaganda understands that if the kiras are alive it's because he was swayed into wanting to keep them alive already). Is slowly but surely succeeding in eroding light's God complex into something more manageable by making him help make the world better by solving cases and pointing out corruption, under L's name (for enrichment)

The Public, who should now be just around the time where archive of our own and deviant art and ff.net are being created, who is divided in three factions which are 1. The normal people who are not thinking about the kiras anymore. 2. The anti-Kira people who are rightfully pissed off that they got away with their crimes just because the detective who found them was way too fucking rich. 3. The deviants, who have connected the dots and are now writing rpf about the powerful and rich detective L and his two hot pet murderers who he basically bought out of execution

I truly believe that when Light became Kira, he became his best authentic self. Not for anyone else, of course, but for he who had been in a straight jacket of conformity his whole life— it must have been relieving.

"Oh my god no, I'm not a perfect person anymore! Wait. Actually, I'm always perfect, no matter what! I can be a killer god and I'm still better than anyone else! Wow. This is great. I love being myself." Real self love everyone.

Even if he had to hide it from everyone except Ryuk, Light was objectively happier than at the beginning of the series. That's why I don't like Yotsuba!Light more than Kira!Light actually, like he's just an incomplete, less depraved version of who Light really is. An egomaniacal serial killer that likes being an asshole. He's back fitting himself into a box and I hate that for him.

Even L liked Y!Light less. Humming and hawwing in a depression for weeks because this wasn't the little neurotic sicko he had been hunting down. Where had his TRUE boyfriend gone?

I stand by Light's rights and his wrongs. He's much more fun and interesting with both.

Same for L! Morally grey, Kira obsessed detective or NOTHING! None of this "oooo lite no kiwwing is bad 🥺" BARF. He wanted to bark at and chase Kira around a yard for enrichment.

They have exactly the same personalities with two completely different views of the world, L is who Light would be if he never tried to come across as ‘normal’, Light is who L would’ve become if he did, they are each other’s only true equal and friend and yet are destined to kill each other and can only possibly meet in the circumstances of having to hunt one another, they both hate to lose but winning means they lose the only person who has ever truly understood them, they both lie to everybody they meet about everything they are but can see through each other clear as day and because of that crave the others total destruction as much as they are relieved at the existence of somebody who understands.
