A Vision of Fiammetta, 1877, by Dante Gabriel Rossetti (1828-1882)
Emma Sandys (1843-1877)
Not much information is known about the English artist Emma Sandys, even many of her works were attributed to her brother, Frederick Sandys (1829-1904), until fairly recently. We can quite clearly tell, thanks to her beautiful paintings, that she was heavily influenced by the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood - a group her brother was involved in - and her clear love for medieval art and aesthetics.
Her speciality in painting were her portraits, both of children and wistful women, as well as Arthurian representations. The atmosphere she formed in her works are so eye-catching, and leave you peering closer to recognise all the symbolic details painted in. She was a impressive artist in her own right, and it is such a shame that there is so little known about her.
