i wish AO3 had, like, an option to tag certain characters as “main characters” or “side characters” because if you try to find fics about an unpopular character through their tag you end up browsing through like 3000 fics where one sentence mentions them scratching their ass in the background and that’s it

WIP Wednesday (Challengers, "Foster Fail")

Art wonders when Lily became a swimmer.

She's always lived for water. Her top priority on any new terrain -- a hotel, a training center, a sponsor's CEO's Mediterranean villa that he won't be using this week -- is to find a pool she can splash in. She's had lessons and passed swim tests to prove she deserves the deep end on her own.

But on this October morning, in the backyard pool of the Delray Beach house they own but rarely use, Lily makes a racing dive into the deep end. Before Art can summon fatherly words of caution, it's clear they aren't needed. She executes a smooth, skillful freestyle lengthwise down the pool; not a very long pool, but still. Art wonders what he was doing when she learned this. Who was watching her while she practiced. He also thinks: she'll be six in a week. Is six too young to join a team?

He meets her at the shallow end, takes a seat on the step so their heads are at an even level. Lily grips the edge of the pool, lays the side of her face on the concrete and keeps her kicks going as she smiles across at him.

“You're pretty fast,” he tells her.

“I know.” Her answer is matter of fact, not boasting, but not basking in Daddy's praise either. She's found something she likes and does well. Lily Duncan Donaldson expects to find many such things in her life. The people around her expect nothing less for her.

It would be bad to look at this early hint of excellence and start thinking about training and trophies, the best coaches and the most competitive clubs. He and Tashi agreed when Lily was barely an idea: they wouldn't be those kinds of parents.

But Art hadn't been thinking of medals, not really. He thought of team, of friends
