A dolphin trainer had volunteered herself and her pod to be part of a study to see if dolphins had a sense of morality, or if they could experience more complicated intents behind their actions than a drive for food or a mate.

Part of the study was to teach the dolphins a maze. The maze had several entrances, and the dolphins could choose which path they began on. One of the paths allowed a single dolphin to complete the maze, but to do so he must sabotage the rest of his pod. Two of the paths lead to dead ends. The fourth and fifth were each difficult and would require teamwork, but would eventually lead to the finish. Whenver the dolphins completed a part of the maze successfuly, they were rewarded, but only if they exhibited what the lead scientist qualified as a noble intent.

After a frustrating week of unsuccessfully trying to teach the dolphins the maze, the dolphin trainer was fed up. She approached the lead scientist. “This is ridiculous! This isn’t even scientific!”

She and the lead scientist fought for the better part of half an hour as the lead scientist tried to convince her to stay. “What can we do to keep you in the program?” he asked desperately.

“A reward!” snapped the trainer. “For all intents and porpoises!”
