The hairpin Maomao gave Shisui representing how love = freedom of choice.
Hairpins in TAD represent belonging to/with someone, and the ones she bore as Loulan tied her to a life she never asked for; a belonging to her mother and clan, and the emperor.
When Maomao gives Shisui her hairpin as a parting gift, as an offering for her prayer, the dialogue goes like this:
šŖ²:Why in my collar and not in my hair?
š:You already have so much up there.
She acknowledges the burden and duty Shisui bears, and in tucking it into her collar instead of her hair, she gives her a choice.
Maomao doesnāt claim her, but gives her the option. A stark contrast to all the roles and expectations imposed on her her entire life.
In her last moments as Shisui, the only tie she has to the palace and prior life now is the hairpin Maomao gave her, and after selling that she becomes free.
She finally belongs to herself only.
To love is to understand, and Maomaoās belief in a way out for Shisui actually gave her one.
This song makes me think about Winterfox. Luna coming out and hard launching Ami to her fans in the future. https://youtu.be/e7t8JzqVXcs?si=nUs5nCUWRnbRo-oh
I definitely see that, thatās awesome!
i really love that project hail mary made it so clear how much grace loves earth. describing it to rocky, showing him bits of the culture and nature. the water and the cities. the birds. he sincerely and deeply loves earth.
you don't even have a dog. he had a whole planet. he loved being alive on earth and they took that from him.
I have cry, and never have felt better after. I donāt think I have ever found a movie that feel so much like a blanquet, so sweet and cozy, and so full of love
One of the reasons people headcanon Grace as aromantic is the unfortunately realistic scene where they go "you don't have a family or a loved one" as if that's enough of a justification to send him on a suicide mission. As if not having a family makes Grace inherently less valuable and means he should be more willing to sacrifice himself for the greater good.
Grace wasn't sad and lonely, he was happy, he had a good life, he very much did not want to die. They have to do a looney tunes chase sequence and drug him because Grace was *very* unwilling to be the sacrificial lamb. Humanity's savior was dragged kicking and screaming into the role and called selfish for daring to be a coward, as if most of us wouldn't be.
And then he befriends Rocky, who never demands a sacrifice from him, who willingly prolongs his journey home so Grace can go back to his. Rocky has a mate back home and his species depends on his return, and still risks his life to save his squishy human friend. And Grace returns the favor.
And thus the power of friendship saves two planets.
I think having the main theme of your movie being that bravery does not nessicarily mean willingness to subject yourself to pain and fear but rather rising to the challenge once youāre already in that situation is such an important message given our circumstances right now
the aroace read of ryland grace is so personal and haunting. "you don't even have a dog." was it not enough to love the world for the sake of living in it. was it not enough to live for the thrill of discovery. was it not enough to smile at your students. was it not enough to be afraid.
Still thinking about how Grace was always treated as disposable. Kicked out of his passion field for his honestyāunderpaid as a (very good) teacher, to the point he canāt afford a carāleft alone in a room full of argon with a sample that might kill him, while all the indispensable guys who put him there stood on the other side of the glass and watched. Shoved screaming into a mission that would kill him. And then, then this bonkers little alien who just met him gladly trades years off his life (via extended return mission) to save him. Runs burning through deadly air to keep him from dying. Chooses finally to weave their lives together forever and recreate Graceās best dreams of Earth to make him happy. No wonder Grace told Rocky he doesnāt have to get him a gift, heās given him everything. To one little spider guy, Grace is irreplaceable. Thatās love.
the obligatory trolley problem post
"the most unrealistic thing about project hail mary is that a woman is in charge" WRONG look up the glass cliff. women are much more likely to be promoted to positions of power when things are going poorly and people need a woman to blame. she refers to herself as the "world's whipping boy." the person put in the position to have to commit ecological and humanitarian crimes of that scale in order to save the earth would only ever be a woman.
A relatively messy study/fanart for project hail mary, the last month has really awakened my inner space loving child again
Also fun fact, while drawing Man of war by Radiohead started randomly playing which i think is very veru fitting for this
pov you see something alive after being alone for 40 years
So many ruthless/pragmatic characters get revealed as hypocrites when the sacrifice required is personal, and that's why it's really important to me that Stratt does genuinely care about Grace and also it doesn't make her hesitate for a second. That's her friend and she dragged him screaming to the sacrificial altar with clear eyes and no apology and she would do it again. What a woman.
Congratulations! You made the right choice
