Yknow, seeing how many people responded to that “how old were you when you got into KH and how old are you now” post saying they got into it when they were like 7-10 and are now 20+ got me thinking

I think there’s something to be said for how KH has grown up with its audience, like a lot of series will pick their target demographic and stick with it (Mario is primarily for younger kids, CoD is primarily for the 15-25 range) but KH has evolved in such a way that the kids who first played KH1 have stuck with it, and now their primary target audience is KH fans, not a specific age range/gender

Like look at the sheer tonal difference between KH1 and 0.2, they are not at ALL targeting the same audience in terms of ages/genders, but they are targeting the same audience in that they’re targeting the same people, who have all aged 15 years between the two games, so the tone has changed to reflect that

I think that’s a big part of why KH seems so impenetrable to people who didn’t grown up with it- these games are for KH fans who grew up on these games, so they lean into the lore hard and can pretty safely assume you have the background knowledge from previous games to keep up, but if you don’t have that knowledge then you have a TON of catching up to do to understand what’s going on
