I have a question. Where do people (z*k) get this idea that Aang would go into the Avatar state if Katara wasn't his girlfriend, holding her against it. Where does this come from? A comic? Where in the show does this state that? Isn't the Avatar State an allegory for grief of the loss of the people you love?
And yes it is. the times Katara had to comfort Aang out of the avatar state in the show was when he found out that his entire culture and people had been murdered and when he found out that Appa could be gone for good. Both times Katara did not say shit like "Aang sweetie this isn't you" she just silently held him to let him know he wasn't alone and he would be ok. Then Aang regulated his OWN emotions back to being normal. Katara does not spend the show regulating Aang's emotions, all she lets him know is that there are people around him that love and understand him.
the scene where Sokka and Katara were put in danger to trigger Aang into the avatar state Aang then apologizes for becoming like that bc that's what the avatar state is. A physical manifestation of the worst parts of anger and grief if not controlled and it is something he learns to control. That's like half the finale??
Also this whole idea of regulating emotions when it's literally just her talking to him when he's having a hard time??? Like do y'all not talk to your friends when you're upset or shit. I honestly find it more admirable that he doesn't just sit in silence and let the resentment fester, something most others on the team would.
I think this idea comes from his statement in ember island players "if my chakras weren't blocked I would've gone into the avatar state" which is just? such a misinterpretation of what happens? Aang was upset he was being turned into such a ridiculous caricature and upset that after all the mixed signals that had happened between him and Katara now there was yet another one.
After lashing out he realizes he was wrong and never tries to push her further or talk to her about it. I agree we should've gotten an apology scene but it's like? use critical thinking please.
The idea that he would be angry if Katara wanted to date ZUko is ridiculous. First of all, I doubt Zuko would ever make a move on someone Aang is so clearly not over not because he's scared of him but because he loves his friend but also? Aang loves Zuko? He cut off his connection to Roku for giving him the idea to kill him? He spends half of his screentime in the comics with him? Like on top of characterization Kataang's relationship they also misinterpret ZUkaang's friendship.
Not to mention that one scene from the Promise where Aang goes into the avatar state bc Zuko's guards were literally manhandling her after he told them to let her go??? Like dawg r we being deadass. I also don't like that scene tbh tho bc it kinda goes against everything we've been shown about Aang's mastery over the avatar state.
And here's the funny thing, Zks don't like the comics either. Say it robbed them from any Zuko and Katara interactions as if a) most of the gang were on good terms especially in promise bc they were all angry AF at Zuko. and b) as if she didn't come to help him in the Search the second he asked.
But they ofc use what they like to make their arguments feasible instead of just agreeing that the comics ruined both Aang and Zuko's characters in some way.
