Young wizard Dies in Battle for Internet Freedom
Aaron Swartz, a young wizard of tremendous potential, killed himself. It makes me sad and it makes me angry. There was no paladin who would take hits for him, no healer who would keep him alive in body and soul, we failed him.
We might loose the war for Internet freedom because we’re not protecting our brightest from the powers that be.
In closing let me quote from the Fellowship of the Ring:
Aragorn: If by my life or death I can protect you, I will. You have my sword... Legolas: And you have my bow. Gimli: And *my* axe.
Now let’s hunt some Orc!

Underwater Camera Housing Prototype

These are the first pictures of our new underwater camera housing prototype. Now I have to fit the electronics into it and then we're ready for the test.
GoPro Wifi Bacpac and Netgear Range Extender
I'm happy to report that the Netgear range extender (Wifi repeater) works with the ad hoc network created by the GoPro Wifi Bacpac. Doesn't help us with our underwater camera project though because seawater is opaque in the 2.4-5 GHz range. Even with the range extender 20 cm of seawater is enough to kill the connection.

Going back and forth on #100push-ups
I'm now doing 10 push-ups every time I have to wait for a compile/test cycle to finish. Progress on the #100push-ups is slow though.
Shark Tag Calibration Data Example
Close to the boat the ping signal from the Vemco shark tag is well above the background noise of the corals. The 69kHz peak diminishes fast though and at more than 400 m distance disappears in the noise.
A true uphill battle #100pushups

Our new cubicle office at CYROI
We found nice minimal office space at the CYROI (www.CYROI.fr) , the local cyclotron and P3 lab. We have an option on actual lab space once we make progress with financing.
The Tetrahedron Hydrophone Array Testrun
See the full gallery on Posterous
Here are some pictures of our makeshift lab where we're in the process of testing the ultrasound transducer that we later used to calibrate the tetrahedron hydrophone array.
I also added a couple of pictures that show us handling the tetrahedron. I slipped on the quay when handling the tetrahedron during a distance test and got soaked in nasty harbor water.
We got good measurements of the shark tags too. We're now one step closer to doing realtime detection and localization of tagged sharks.
