Carl Hagenbeck was born on June 10, 1844, to a #fishmonger named Claus Gottfried Carl Hagenbeck. Claus was also a merchant who bought and sold #exotic #animals. He maintained a small #zoological #garden. Carl chose to follow in his father’s footsteps. At a young age, he became an #exoticanimal trader, selling to #zoos and #circuses. Carl took over his father’s animal #menagerie in 1866 and became a leading dealer by the early 1870s. As the #animaltrade declined, Carl embarked on the production of #circus shows. He featured different people from diverse backgrounds and several animals in his shows. In 1887, Carl began to advocate for a change from inhumane treatment of animals. He demonstrated through his performances, notably in 1889 when he featured an act in which three #lions pulled him around the cage in a #chariot, that such treatments of animals are cruel and unnecessary. Carl stressed before his audiences that animals are intelligent, hence they can be controlled by befriending them. Carl eventually sold his animal shows to Benjamin Wallace, who renamed them as the Hagenbeck-Wallace Circus in 1906. Carl opened a zoological garden the next year. His zoological garden became the model for future open-air zoos. #HoratioPhilips believed that the ideal airplane would have a large number of wings that could generate lift together. He began working on this project before the #WrightBrothers. Philips’s first step was to create his own wind tunnel, which ended up being one of the most powerful and efficient of his day. This allowed Philips to test a variety of #airfoil designs and decide which ones were worth pursuing. In 1891, Philips filed for one of the first patents describing a modern wing shape and went about designing an #airplane. With wind tunnel tests demonstrating that many thin, high–aspect ratio wings would give enough lift, Philips made an unmanned #aircraft with a set of 50 wings. Mounted on an arm that would sweep the airplane on a circular track, Philips discovered that this arrangement could lift about 180 kilograms (400 lb). The airplane was very unstable even on the ground, but Philips was convinced that his #Multiplane design was the way forward. It was not until 1904 that the first manned Multiplane was ready for testing. Powered by an unusual coal engine, the 1904 airplane had 20 wings stacked on top of each other. On the test flight, the plane took to the air for 15 meters (50 ft) before settling back to the ground. Undeterred, Philips went about making a new airplane. This time, his Multiplane had 200 wings and looked more like a box than an airplane. During the 1907 test flight, the new Multiplane took to the air and flew for 150 meters (500 ft), completing the first #powered #flight in the United Kingdom. Although the flight was a historical success, the 1907 Multiplane was still plagued with stability issues and was nearly impossible to control in flight. This is one of the most infamous photographs ever taken. The #photographer Eddie Adams would later regret being on the scene at the time, because his #photograph would go on to destroy the lives of the gunman and his family. He is Nguyễn Ngọc Loan, a Major General in the South #Vietnamese Army, and the National Chief of Police. What you don’t see in the photograph is the reason Loan was executing the prisoner. That man is believed to be Nguyễn Văn Lém, a local #VietCong officer who had been operating a gang of murderers bent on killing all the local police officers in that area of #Saigon. He was responsible for arranging the drive-by shootings or hit-and-runs of dozens of policemen—and if they themselves could not be attacked, he targeted and murdered their families instead. So when he was finally caught and brought before Loan, the Chief of Police calmly unholstered his revolver and shot Lém in the temple, killing him instantly. Adams had no idea what he was about to photograph. James Meredith, a prominent #civilrights activist, was leading a march when he was sprayed in his back with birdshot. The shooter was a man called Aubrey Norvell, who had reportedly shouted, “I just want #JamesMeredith!" Miraculously, none of the sixty-three birdshot pellets struck a vital organ or broke Meredith’s spine, even though the pattern wounded him from head to buttocks. In the picture, Meredith is lying on the street in agony. He cried out, “Isn’t anyone going to help me?” No one did, but the photographer Thornell shouted that he should stay calm, and that an ambulance was on its way. Meredith was taken to a hospital where the pellets were extracted, and he healed well enough in two days to finish the march before it reached Jackson. Over a span of 16 years, an unknown man simply called the “Mad Bomber” terrorized New York City. He would plant explosives in various public places like movie theaters, subway terminals, libraries, and buildings that were owned by the energy company Consolidated Edison. In all, 33 bombs were planted and 22 of them detonated. Amazingly, only 15 people were injured. For each of the bombs, the man would call the police or newspapers stating where a bomb was planted, but he never gave the exact location. This would make for chaotic scenes as the police tried to evacuate people and simultaneously look for the bombs which were filled with gunpowder and set with a cheap pocket watch. The police were looking for any leads, so theyasked a criminologist for a profile of the bomber. The criminologist concluded that the bomber was from Eastern Europe, and that he worked for Con Edison but was probably fired for reasons he deemed unfair. The day after the profile was published, the police printed a message to the bomber in theNew York Journal American telling him to give himself up. He responded saying he would make a truce, but he still wanted to crush Con Edison. The police published his letter in the paper and released a statement of their own. In turn, the bomber wrote a letter back in which he admitted being an injured worker. A file clerk at Con Edison looked through the files of compensation cases with disturbed individuals. Then she came across a file for a man named George Metesky who had been injured on the job. He had been fired after getting paid for 26 weeks of sick pay. When he tried to apply for more compensation because he got sick from his injury, he was denied because Con Edison claimed he filed too late. In the file, #Metesky had written words and phrases that were very similar to the published letters. The clerk told her supervisor, who in turn told the police. The police went to question Metesky before coming back with a search warrant. One of the continuing legacies of the senseless brutality of the #VietnamWar was the use of #AgentOrange, the infamous herbicide that was sprayed over Vietnamese foliage to flush out #VietCong forces and destroy their food sources. The #USArmy dropped approximately 75.5 million liters (20 mil gal) of Agent Orange over #Vietnam and parts of #Cambodia. Although the end of the war seemed to signal the end of suffering, life doesn’t always play fair. Four and a half decades later, the people in the spray zone are still dealing with the debilitating effects of the #dioxin contamination that seeped into their bodies and land. While #Washington steadfastly refuses to take responsibility for the damage, the children and grandchildren of women who were exposed are being born with #birthdefects. During the #VietnamWar, a lethal section of Vietnam 80 kilometers (50 mi) north of #Saigon called “War Zone D” served as a hiding spot for untold numbers of #VietCong forces. Ambushes and firefights were common in the zone, and surprise skirmishes could easily turn into days-long battles amid the dense jungle undergrowth and rubber plantations. On June 17, 1967, medic James E. Callahan wasdeep in #WarZoneD with a battalion of infantrymen when an #ambush drove them to cover. The battle dragged on for three hours, and by the end of it, 31 men in the division had been killed and over 100 had been wounded. As the bullets whistled overhead, Callahan sprang into action. Photographer Henri Huet captured the above photo as Callahan tried to save a dying soldier.
