I started my transition at 32. I'm now 39. Last summer I saw my cousin for the first time in probably 20 years, and all she could say, over and over, was how much I looked like our aunt and my mom, and occasionally my grandmother, who passed before I was born.

And while these women were never Hollywood's version of beauty, it made me so happy, because they were the most beautiful women I ever knew, and I grew up wanting to be just like them.

After we snapped a couple pictures together and she hurried off to catch a flight, she sent me some, and in one of them, I finally saw myself, happy, and laughing and smiling in a way I never am in selfies, and I could see the women who came before me in my face, in my smile. My aunt's pudgy cheeks and sparkling eyes, my mom's sharp chin, my grandmother's proud nose.

It made me sad, because I miss them all, but it made me happy, too, to see the woman I've become, who looks so much like these strong women I was raised by.
