Hermione greeted her best friend with a hug.

After pulling away Harry said, “Well, you’re about the last person I expected to find on a singles cruise. Except maybe Ron. Or Malfoy. Or Parkinson. Or- Okay, lots of people, but that doesn’t change the fact that I didn’t expect to see you here. Didn’t you say you had annoying family stuff this week?”

Hermione rolled her eyes. “I do. I’m here with my cousin. My job is to make sure that she doesn’t stay in her cabin all week and read.”

“Ooo. Talk about the fox guarding the hen house.”

Hermione swatted him on the arm. “What about you?”

“Eh. I decided to get out of the country before I was volunteered for any more diaper duty. A singles cruise is on the short list of things where people would feel guilty about interrupting my vacation.” Everyone did say that he needed to move on from Ginny after all. Harry looked around. “Though I was also curious about what happened on a Star Trek themed cruise. Now it makes sense why you would mention it. Or even know about it.”

When serendipity leads to Harry and Hermione being on the same singles cruise, Hermione thinks fate might be telling her to make a move on her handsome best friend. Unfortunately, her cousin Olivia is also along for the cruise. Olivia is the one person in her family who heard Hermione say Harry was just a friend and actually believed her, so she sees nothing wrong with hanging out with her cousin and inadvertently kills every romantic moment that comes along. At least it better be inadvertent, because otherwise Hermione is going to need to look up if there’s a specific word for killing your cousin.

“There’s a reason Neville and Harry were born only minutes apart. They’re actually twins. Alice Longbottom was unable to conceive due to complications from a childhood illness. When it was determined Lily was having twins the close couples decided to share the boys so that the Longbottom line wouldn’t go extinct. They would be raised as brothers but carry separate names. The healer who verified Lily’s pregnancy was obliviated and Alice was dosed with a special potion that simulated a pregnancy matched to Lily’s. Not even their closest friends were let in on the secret. The only one other than the two couples who knew was the midwife that delivered the boys. Then when the tragic events of 1981 struck the brothers were separated, seemingly for all time. Post Voldemort Britain is not what Harry and Hermione had fought for. Seeing their wealth and power about to vanish the remaining light and dark pureblood families came together to pass “common sense compromise” laws before the heroes of Hogwarts could organize to leverage their fame. Strict primogeniture for inheritance was reinstituted to “conserve family assets” and although muggleborns weren’t prohibited from marrying into noble family lines the Heir or Lord was only allowed to take such a spouse once every 4 generations. Nepotism was still the primary hiring criteria everywhere in the Wizarding World. Hermione was at a low point. Her parents never returned from Australia. Her engagement to Harry was now in legal limbo. Her request for healer training at St. Mungo’s was denied in favor of “more qualified” applicants. In the end she accepted a trainee position in the only field that no one else wanted, midwifery. She was encouraged to both start a delivery journal of her own and read through older journals bequeathed for training purposes. Blasting through them at 2-3 a day she found one that had been tucked away behind several others and obviously forgotten for years. The hidden secrets of the Potters’ midwife had finally come to light. When she informed Harry of her discovery she was shocked. His first words weren’t an angry, “What the hell?” Or even an excited, “I have a brother!” Instead it was a brilliant grin along with, “Neville’s older!” Confused, Hermione asked why that mattered. Harry pointed out that under the new laws that made Neville sole lord to both families and since Hannah was already pregnant with a boy he wasn’t even the heir. That allowed him to finally be just Harry. Determined to not miss his chance lest some other foolishness overtake them, Harry summoned the ring he had been saving for over a year and proposed again on the spot. They eloped to the U.S., had a Vegas wedding, and disappeared into the forests of the Pacific Northwest to make a life together far from the shores of bigoted Britain.”
