Under Crowley’s adoring gaze, Aziraphale shifts and glances away, as if an errant spot on the wall is the most interesting thing in the room. It isn’t. Aziraphale is. There’s nothing and no one more fascinating in the entire world. Crowley’s heart might burst, seeing her lying like this with her shirt hanging open to reveal soft, fair skin. Crowley kisses a mole high atop Aziraphale’s collarbone. “How’d I get so lucky?” Crowley asks when she raises her head. “We really found each other again, after all these years? And you want me?” Aziraphale doesn’t answer with words, but her eyes fill with unshed tears. Her nod is nearly imperceptible, but it’s there. She’s here, in London, in Crowley’s flat. How?  This can’t be real.

"Amberley please, and make it sharp. But not too sharp, you understand, I would prefer my hair stays on.” Aziraphale placed a hand on the dashboard, and the Bentley purred. “'Atta girl.” 

Crowley rolled his eyes. 

“Amberley? What’s in Amberley? This isn’t going to be one of those awful manor houses, is it?”

“Just drive the car.”

“Fine, but if you are dragging me to look at paintings of the aristocracy I am bringing a bag of rotten cabbages.” Crowley pressed the accelerator and they cleared the London traffic in 20 minutes.

The city drifted away, and they reached the first turning off the motorway on a country road, almost the size of the Bentley.

“Would you look at that,” Crowley said. Aziraphale raised his head from the book he had brought along for the journey; he couldn’t help but bite back the grin that was forming.

“How strange,” Aziraphale responded. 

“Is that a 1935 Derby? It’s almost in as good a knick as this one.”

“I wouldn’t know, you’re the expert.” Aziraphale feigned a yawn, and went back to glancing at the words in his book, though he was far too distracted by Crowley staring slack jawed at the car in front to take in any of the story.

The Bentley in front was the same size as Crowley’s, though it was a pale yellow, which Aziraphale had to admit he found rather dashing. The man driving wore a black newsie cap, and a tweed suit, which was surely stifling in the summer heat.

“Is that another one?” Crowley said.

“Bizzare. Three Bentleys in a row.”

“You are up to something,” Crowley said, “You haven’t read a single word in the last ten minutes.”

“How can you tell?”

“You make little noises when you enjoy the prose.”

“Perhaps I am not enjoying it.” Aziraphale placed a bookmark. 

“There is a fourth one.” Crowley jammed a thumb behind them; they were in a row of four Bentleys now. He turned around to peer at it. “Not a 1929 Speed Six? It looks practically brand new!”

“Obviously very popular in Amberley.”

“There are 182 in the entire world, angel. They cannot be popular in Amberley.”

“Must be a bizarre coincidence.”

“You always were a terrible liar.” 

“I have nothing to lie about.” Aziraphale placed a hand over his mouth, but it did nothing to stop the smile spreading across his face. “Turn left, follow the, er, Bentley.”

Crowley clicked the indicator. There were six Bentleys behind them; all shapes and sizes.  Aziraphale felt entirely and utterly pleased with himself, watching the demon fidget in his chair, crane his neck pretending to still remain nonchalant, and mumble under his breath. 

“1931, good year, almost got one of those.” 

“There are only four of those left in the UK.”

“1921! One of the first ones out of the factory.”

They turned the corner following the yellow Bentley under the sign that said ‘Welcome to Amberley Museum’. Crowley’s jaw dropped as they crawled into the carpark, and a woman in a fluorescent vest waved at him to turn down the window. 

“Here for the car show?”

Aziraphale leaned across. “Yes, we’re here to exhibit. Anthony J Crowley?”

Crowley closed the door, walked into the small office, and flung himself into a chair across from a petite person with short dark hair, whose small desk plaque read, "Saraqael Currus, Public Relations," and whose customised wheelchair threatened to swallow their small frame. "Got a bit of a thorny problem, Saraqael," he said, in a manner that aimed for "casual," but missed entirely and instead arrived somewhere closer to "apprehensive." "One that requires a public relations specialist?" Saraqael asked with raised eyebrows. "I thought your problems were closer to the space-faring side of things." "They usually are," Crowley said. He opened his mouth, closed it again, and then opened it once more to ask, "If I tell you something, will you promise not to say anything to anyone else about it?" "That sounds like the opposite of publicity or public relations," Saraqael commented, with a wry twist of their mouth.

The pearly white of Aziraphale’s stockings and breeches, the pitch black of Crowley’s pantaloons and boots. “And ruin your brand new Hessians?” Aziraphale’s expression turned even prissier as he pointed one of his impeccably manicured fingers towards the front of his left boot. “I have been meaning to ask, is that a heart?” “That is most definitely not a heart.” “Well, it looks like a heart.” “It’s clearly an upside down spade. And you know what they say about spades…” They should always be called what they are, and certainly not be accused of being hearts of all things. Aziraphale slowly arched an eyebrow. “I see.” “Circling back to dancing–” “No.” “You’re wasting a perfectly good chance to mark your territory and signal every unmarried person here tonight that you are taken.” “I rather think that being seen together will do the trick without me making a complete fool of myself.” “Pity. Should have seen your face.” He downed half of his ratafia in a single gulp, grimacing at the cloyingly sweet taste. “Let me tell you, Miss Jane would not appreciate your disbelief.” “If she has any common sense at all, this so-called and not at all imaginary Miss Jane would agree with me about you being exceptionally rude.” “Which doesn’t prevent me from being correct as well. Dance with me and I assure you there will be nary a suitor darkening your doorstep tomorrow.” Hope flickered back to life in the viscount’s eyes. “You cannot possibly know that.” “Are you brave enough to find out?”

When Crowley welcomed Aziraphale into the flat—Pepper blew past them to find the twins and didn’t require much welcoming—the beautiful angel held a vintage carpet bag that Crowley would have placed somewhere around the Victorian Era. Not for the first time, Crowley wondered what exactly Aziraphale wore to bed. Images shuffled through his mind: Aziraphale in an old-fashioned nightshirt and nightcap, Aziraphale wearing tartan flannel pyjamas, Aziraphale shirtless wearing just his boxers, and finally, Aziraphale naked as the day he was born. Judging by the size of the bag Aziraphale held, the latter seemed unlikely.

He wasn’t sure what they were up to. “Good news,” he said as he walked to find them. “Pepper and Mr Fell are on their way over. Um…” He tried to think about what they needed to do to prepare to have guests in ten minutes. Entertaining wasn’t exactly something he did regularly. “Wot?” Levi yelled, and both kids came running. “Pepper’s coming here? Now?” Lil asked as she rounded the corner, sliding on her socks. Levi appeared right behind her wearing nothing but a pair of princess knickers.

Let's talk about that cold open though

Honestly, this pure h/c cold open may be my favorite part of the finale. At least its potential to launch a thousand fics was so palpable I could feel it on my skin.

Anyway, some observations worth pondering (and what a bummer that we're never going to get official answers to any of those).

As the camera zooms in on the Eternal Flame, there's a gravely injured angel just slightly down below. Is that Crowley? The scene is blurry and poorly lit, but we can tell that the angel has a long dark hair and is wearing a hooded cape which partially obscures their face.

I tried editing the screencaps to increase brightness and contrast and apologize for not the best quality overall.

So, do we think this angel is Crowley? Because when we see him in the next couple of minutes, he is wearing a hood, and his hair is long:

But then, of course, the angel at the bottom of the Eternal Flame had wings - battered, charred even, but still white underneath it all - and Crowley, when we see him, doesn't. Did he just hide them before trying to ambush Aziraphale?

And then there's the acting credits in the closing titles:

So, Crowley was the first character to appear onscreen according to this. But does it apply to the cold open or to the main part only? Because Crowley was the first one to appear in that one too (the back alley scene). Really really intriguing.

Another feature of interest in the cold open is Crowley's eyes. It's hard to see, but he still has his angelic pre-snake eyes:

Angelic eyes and quite possibly still white angelic wings? Then in this scene Crowley is a rebel angel who had just lost the war - but he hasn't yet fallen. Sooo fascinating - and again, it sucks that we will never see any of this elaborated in the canon. But that's what fan works are for.
