On angels and their wings

I’ve been toying around with how my angels and their wings work for years now, and I had a couple of thoughts recently!

Some basics

First off, the idea is that angels are humans with a full capacity for magic. The ability to redirect mana is rare in humans, but angels were made with the specific goal of having them be mages. My idea was that their wings aren’t part of their genetic code as an organ, but are something they have acquired through magic and are more of a process coded in their genes.

Wings are large storing units for mana that angels can tap into if they so desire, making them terrifying opponents in combat. While the wings are made of flesh, are connected to the blood stream, and the angel can fully control them and feel everything that happens to them, they have been optimised to store mana energy in every single part of the flesh, even in the feathers. This also means that once the angel does tap into them, the wings start to degenerate.

While this gives angels a huge reservoir of mana, there is an issue with speed. It takes quite awhile for angels to regenerate their wings once used up, between a month and a year for the full wings depending on how well trained the angel is, and they can’t just burn through their wings as they please. There is a maximal mana transfer speed that when reached can’t be exceeded, so angels can still run out of mana with their wings if they cast large or need a lot of mana. One of the key points in defeating a winged angel is ensuring they can’t cast smaller spells and forcing them into wasteful casting.

Angels can choose whether or not they wish to generate their wings, but it takes the correct technique to do so. Inept angels can’t regrow their wings, and some angels don’t know how to disable their regeneration. Some of them even can’t disable it and have no choice but to carry wings. Those people often enjoy a higher regeneration and mana transfer rate and tend to work in magic-intensive fields such as the military.

Most angels don’t even carry their wings. They’re large, they’re always in the way, they’re extra weight that need to be compensated with extra food, and in many places they are even a status symbol that most people simply aren’t allowed to display. Still, all of Heaven is adapted to the carrying of wings, even the homes of families who will most likely never need to carry said wings. It’s ingrained into their culture and is done out of respect, as a way to signify all winged are welcome.

New ideas

Heaven may have been built on a couple of mana fonts, meaning that with the aid of specialised wing healers, a wing could regenerate in a very short time. Still to be decided; maybe good wing restorers are much faster than bad ones, it depends on which font is visited, or some other quality?

Angels are most likely born without wings and if they don’t get the assistance of a wing shaper, never will get any wings themselves. Angels who do want wings need to visit said wing shaper, who will help them with the wing’s design and part of the shaping but who will also teach them how to enable the generation.

Many districts have the tradition to consider the first wing-shaping a step into maturity. It’s a coming of age tradition for older teens or young adults to at a certain age receive their wings for the first time, regardless of social status. Those who enjoy the status to keep their wings can do so if they please, and it’s tradition that those who don’t lose their wings again after the festivities.

Angels who aren’t magically inclined or who otherwise can’t cast away their wings can be assisted by wing shapers and restorers. The mana energy encapsulated into their wings can be transferred to another angel, aiding in shaping their wings.

There may exist wing donors - people who enable their regeneration, and who once full visit a wing restorer or a wing shaper and transfers their mana energy to another angel for much faster regeneration. This holds roughly the same position in society as organ donors do to ours.

In fact, I have already changed my mind. What if instead of mana fonts, the quick restoration is done through donors instead?

Or what if there is a very limited amount of fonts only few people are allowed to use as not to deplete it, and the less urgent cases get to work with wing transplants?

The process that shapes wings in angels is intrinsic to them. Even an angel who doesn’t enable their regeneration still has a bodily process that other species do not have that enables them to actually form and carry the wings. In a way, it’s semi-genetic. This means wings can’t be shaped onto other species.

I haven’t yet decided if angels can fly at all, or if they can only glide. The correct muscle and bone movement is present already, but the energy required, muscle power, and aerodynamic details of it all are stuff I gotta think about a little more. I’m leaning more towards an inability for long flight with a possibility for burst of flight, for example when trying to get up somewhere or when trying to flee somewhere in panic. Definitely no more than 5 seconds of flight.

Maybe there’s a very small subset of flyers who are genetically predisposed to be long flyers, in the same way some pigeons are bred to fly at over 1km for 24 hours. I can also imagine it being a learned skill, but I don’t know how viable that is to work.

There’s also the idea that due to being chock full of magic, wings can be caught into the slipstream of mana that always radiates straight up from the ground, and that by spreading them the area their wings take up can be enough to raise them in the air, assisted by the traditional flapping movements. This would make angels a subset or hot air balloons.

I’m sure there’s more to be said about the topic but that’s all I can think of for now!

Fun fact: immortals and their blood

Hungry immortals can use a loophole with their blood. If they chug up a decent amount, their body will notice the loss and their immortal drive will refill the blood without costing them any energy, including the nutrients that were found inside the blood. The blood already inside the stomach doesn’t count as the original blood, so it will still be digested and yield net energy.

This is most applicable to demonic immortals, whose bodies can create an enzyme that prevents blood from coagulating and allows the nutrients to be resorbed straight outta it. Said enzyme is also why demons run really well on meat, even when raw.

Depending on the type of immortal, they technically can also eat their own body parts. But since this is far more painful since it requires amputation or tearing out flesh, most tend to stick to blood, which can be obtained through much less painful methods.

Southwestern dragons can weigh close to a ton and tower over demons in size alone. It takes them no effort at all to carry one or lift them in the air. They find demons cute like we find puppies cute or elephants find humans cute. They just adore their tiny softling companions!
