I’m kinda surprised nobody here gives nicknames to celebs—we came up with so many for Ben! Maybe it’s ‘cause just using their real name feels too distant or formal, idk.
The way Matt and Ben split their roles running Artists Equity totally makes me think of a married couple managing a family. Ben, as CEO, is in charge of the day-to-day operations. He’s got to put on a suit every day, head into that office with over seventy employees, and handle all sorts of stuff from behind his desk. Matt, though, is more flexible—he takes on big movie roles outside of what AE produces. That makes sense because by starring in those blockbusters and working with top directors, he can help AE expand its connections even more.
Okay, maybe I’m the only one who sees it this way, but it’s like having a wife who keeps the household running smoothly and a husband out there networking and hustling. We might never get to see them walk down the aisle, but come on—isn’t AE basically their love child? They’re both putting so much work into nurturing it, after all.
And this "couple" even goes on family trips sometimes, like when they worked on Air or The Rip. Or maybe those are more like honeymoons? Either way, they get to spend a few sweet months together, seeing each other first thing in the morning and last thing at night. It’s like a reward for all their hard work.
Ben Affleck & Matt Damon Explain Why Their Artists Equity Is Hollywood’s Most Disruptive Company As They Release ‘Small Things Like These’
I really love how Matt and Ben have always been so close and in sync, yet they have completely different ways of approaching things.
Like, Ben would get dragged to a tattoo parlor by his friends as a teenager to "practice" on him, and he’d end up running away halfway because it hurt too much (I think it was supposed to be a spiderweb tattoo? Something like that, I don’t remember exactly). Meanwhile, Matt didn’t get his first tattoo until he was 42, and even then, it was only because his wife suggested it—just the names of his wife and kids, plus a small design he happened to see on the tattoo artist’s computer that Heath Ledger once had.
It’s wild to imagine them being so inseparable and sharing everything when they were young, but then Ben would just come home one day with a permanent new mark on his body, like they had totally different ways of engaging with the world—yet it never caused any conflict between them. It’s such a fascinating dynamic.
Oh, and when the host asked Matt if he’d ever get Ben’s name tattooed on him, Matt said, "I'd do it, I'd get his tattoo on my arm, I wouldn't care. " which could mean nothing.
are you ever about to put on a movie but you realize you don't really want to watch The Movie, you want to be eight years old on a rainy saturday, and under your favorite butterfly blanket, and mom made hot chocolate and popcorn with extra butter, and you're watching The Movie for the first time ever? what are you supposed to do then
couple different options here
