STELMARIA + the crumb of lord asriel’s fatherly instincts
his dark materials really said heaven is not real and you will return to dust upon your death so you need to make your own heaven on earth by being a good person instead of wasting your time practicing a hateful religion headed by a corrupt church
mary malone doesn’t even know they fought god. she doesn’t know what be the serpent means. she doesn’t know who lyra is. she was supposed to find out but got distracted by roller skating elephants and the narrative just let her. they said Yeah that’s fine. let the lesbian ex-nun physicist search for shiny rocks with talking anteaters for all of season 3.
I'm thinking about His Dark Materials again. Specifically the societal quirks that Lyra's world has as a result of everyone having their soul manifested outside their body in the form of dæmons. It's one of the most fascinating examples of worldbuilding I've come across tbh
Some of my most favourite tidbits:
Dæmons are named by the dæmons of the child's parents
It's taboo to touch another person's dæmon, but this is learnt, not instinctual
Children often settle arguments through their dæmons, with one accepting the dominance of the other (eg. Pan hissing at Annie's fox daemon in the first book to get her to back down)
The fact that people can tell when someone lacks a daemon even though they can be hidden out of sight (like a mouse in your pocket)
To the inhabitants of Lyra's world, looking at someone without a dæmon is like looking at someone without a head
These extra pieces of lore just make the world seem so magical but believable at the same time
truly think one of the other lowkey funniest moments in hdm is when mrs coulter says she and asriel should've kept and raised lyra. like it's such a poignant scene, and i see where she was coming from, but also she was completely wrong. oh god. if there are two people who should not be around a child it's asriel "child killer" belacqua and marisa "child torture, for science" coulter. like, mostly staying away from lyra for a lot of her childhood was in fact the best thing they could've done for her. good job team. that is not the thing to regret here
His Dark Materials is a franchise that tackles so many branches of physics and even creates a universe where the main course of study is experimental theology which is all about identifying and explaining dark matter while also adding dimensions to string theory, the multiverse theory, and the very concept of the human soul. At the same time, it aggressively calls out the problem with the state being controlled by the church, how people are condemned for being different and religious fearmongering stops the chance at growth both on an individual and a societal scale. It’s a franchise where the heroes of the story are two children who aren’t allowed to know the prophecy they’re a part of, who save the world unwittingly simply by doing what they believe to be right. Meanwhile, the person who thought he was the hero all along, the person who rallied an army from multiple universes to FIGHT. GOD. HIMSELF. is ultimately consumed by his own ego and forced to take a back seat when he realises he’s just one tiny piece of a much larger story that’s true heart is his own daugher. The child he abandoned, the child he didn’t know or care to know how to look after. It’s a franchise about finding love even when your biological family abandon you, it’s about looking evil in the eye and seeing your own mother, it’s about good and evil not being black and white but instead a complex and cruel mixture of both. It’s about the two worst people you know banding together at the last second to save their daughter with their final breaths. It’s about exploration and learning how to grow through experience, it’s about kindness being shared across the multiverse, exchanging stories with strangers and saving the whole world by doing something perfectly ordinary and receiving no reward.
Oh, and it’s also a franchise rich with fantasy, with giant talking polar bears, witches and ghosts, angels and daemons, and a mammal-like species from another world that travels exclusively on roller skates.Â
And it fucking. rocks.
the equivalent exchange of your favorite childhood book series (his dark materials and percy jackson) getting the adaptations they finally deserve but the price is that one character must be played by lin-manuel miranda
Finding out abt Uta had to be WILD for the people of Fusha Village. When Shanks came back all sad and said "don't worry Luffy Uta left the crew to become a musician" they ABSOLUTELY had to think "oh wow his daughter died and he's softening the blow for poor Luffy :( How sad :("
AND THEN her CDs start coming out and they find out he was telling the truth????? That's like your parents telling you they sent your dog to live on a farm and you accept he's gone forever and then you see him one day on a country road herding sheep. Wild.
One Piece Film Red basically:
*Shanks activates DON'T FUCK WITH ME mode*
Issho: "We should cease this fight, there are civilians around."
Momonga: "Yesthatsoundslikeagoodplanlet'sgohomenow."
Akainu: "Fuck the civilians just shoot the damn girl!"
Kizaru: "There's civilians? Oh there is - look at all those people - wow I didn't even see that shit."
Issho: "*internally* why did I pick this job again?"
Film Red spoilers(?)
The fact that Shanks adopted little baby Uta when he was only 19 is so funny because now I can just imagine him showing up on the Moby Dick, knocking out half of Whitebeard's crew with Conquerer's Haki, looking him dead in the eye and going "Hey uh what the fuck do babies eat"
I love how in the manga/anime the zoro sanji rivalry mostly doesn’t have a reason behind it and they just started arguing one day based on bad vibes alone, but in the live action it’s because they’re both fighting over who gets to be luffy’s specialist boy. I know what you two are.
i just checked wikipedia and the 2007-2008 writer’s strike was only 99 days long. the strike that shows up in the wikipedia pages of every show from that era with a blurb on how it affected shooting and release schedules.
we’re on day 113 of the current strike, with no end in sight.
I'm making peace with all of the shows I like that are currently airing either not getting an ending at all, or having shitty next seasons. I support the writers and actors, I support the strike, and I think it's really important that we get our mindset straight now, because going by the results of the previous strike it's not going to be pretty and it's 100% the fault of the AMPTP refusing to negotiate in good faith and pay their workers properly.
Word at the studio (NBCUni) this week is that they're absolutely planning to hold out til Christmas.
WB just suspended a whole bunch of it's biggest producers.
My coworkers are being put on cut hour rotations (like they have to alternate who is getting their hours cut). The only reason I'm still working is we're in post production and reality shows and a handful of others already wrapped are able to keep editing. If I'd still been in my costumes job, I would have been let go months ago.
This isn't just affecting the writers & actors. It's the WHOLE INDUSTRY. And the PRODUCERS DON'T GIVE A SHIT.
The AMPTP hired new PR, rather than just generate the boundless good PR that would come from them paying fair wages.
This strike is necessary and WORTH IT. Because it is laying bare the depths of contempt the studios have for their own employees and every worker impacted by this industry - all our subvendors are suffering and letting people go, the restaurants and other business around the studios are suffering, everyone except the Aholes in Charge are suffering.
Because people who don't make enough to work in the cities where they have to work are demanding fair and equal pay. And the bosses who make MORE THAN ENOUGH would rather tank their own industry than pay.
The rest of us - those in Unions not currently on strike will be up for negotiation in the next year. We need the WGA & SAG-AFTRA to keep holding on and get what they deserve so that when we get our turn at the table, we have a shot.
9/8/23 ~130 days of WGA strike. 50+ for SAG-AFTRA
"it's not queer fiction unless the queerness is explicitly declared in the text according to currently accepted terminology and in a way that meets the approval of the entire audience" I mean follow your heart I guess but I trust myself as a queer person to recognise queer themes
"but doesn't this risk giving the author undue credit for queer representation" I do not care about the author
i think part of the reason why good omens takes such a hold on this website and in fannish communities in general is that (as many others before me have noted) the universal fan activity, the one thing that i think unites fans of all kinds, is called “Put Them In Situations” and because of the nature of the show’s canon—two beings that have lived on earth for six thousand years, who have hung out periodically the whole time, who can change their appearance at will, who are charged with meddling in human affairs the whole time—it really invites you to Imagine Situatuons. it shows you several and suggests the existence of more. there are just So Many Situations in which to put Them.
and to varying degrees this is also true of other Big Fandom media like dr. who, supernatural, the x-files, star trek, superheroes in general, etc., where the very nature of the story itself, whether it’s through magic or science or time travel or space travel or fantasy technology or whatever, allows for a virtually infinite number of Possible Situations. and i think fans eat that shit up
Woke up this morning angry at the Metatron and am very pleased to discover a bunch of other people on here also angry at the Metatron
I am so insane about the Job arc.
God says, "I will destroy Job's children," and Aziraphale says, "How did he wrong you?"
God says, "I will destroy Job's children," and Aziraphale says, "How will you make it right?"
God says, "I will destroy Job's children," and Aziraphale says, "Gosh, I don't doubt you know what you are doing and all, but maybe we could slow things down a little and talk about this? And it's essential to the divine plan? Are we sure?"
Crowley says, "I will destroy Job's children," and Aziraphale looks him in the eye and says, "No, you won't."
#more faith in crowley than god. that's fucking nuts actually. (@dat-eyebrows)
EXACTLY.
I want every single person becoming unhinged over this post to know that I am kissing you very gently on the forehead. This thought scrambled my neurons and I am glad you are all here to share it with me.
Think about it.
Think about how Crowley conducted that game with Job's kids once Aziraphale found out he had saved the goats. He was no longer saving face when he set the mansion on fire. It was all for Aziraphale.
"Are you sure, angel!?"
"Yes. Quite sure."
When was the last time anyone, ever, had faith in him like that? That was when Crowley knew, really knew, after only seeing Aziraphale twice - once in Eden when he disobeyed God, and once in Mesopotamia when he defended Her for causing the flood, that this was truly not just any angel, but an angel that follows Heaven as best he can.
How could he not want him to be a friend after that?
They could be alone, together.
