I understand your a high brow artist that deserves the cash but $450????????????????????????? And the lower end is $200? I love your art but that's most of a paycheck right there.

i price my commissions at the price that makes me want to actually take them 🤷‍♀️

it’s fine if you don’t want to pay that price. most people won’t! which means i can spend extra time and care on the commissions i do take.

anyway i still post plenty of things online for free for everyone to enjoy. not getting unique art commissioned from me won’t hurt you in any way.

I’ve seen it in the comments already, but I feel like it’s worth restating: artists have to charge enough to make it worth the time. So if a piece takes a week to do… yes, it’s going to cost, for most people, at least a week’s pay to commission it. And if it’s going to be a week’s pay under minimum wage, well, why even bother?

Personally I tend to think of commissions as actually losing money, since most commissioners aren’t comfortable with you selling prints or what they want done isn’t viable *to* sell as a print anyway, so commissions are a ‘single use’ picture versus an artist’s personal works. Personal stuff can be used down the line for side income as well as advertising/branding, whereas commissions are generally only good for the commissioner, and showing other commissioners you can do a good job on paid work. Which isn’t actually all that great, for a lot of reasons. I charge quite a bit for comms to account for this.

It sucks people get paid peanuts. But artists are trying to feed themselves too. It doesn’t make sense for us to charge a lower wage than what we could get flipping burgers or working retail, and it’s not fair to ask that of us.

this is really the kicker here.

as an artist, i make most of my money from being able to take a single piece of work (a pattern or other design) and applying it to products like skirts or journals or pins. the individual price of an item isn’t worth the time/etc spent to make the piece, but all added up over cumulative sales over years and years and multiple products, it is more than worth it.

anything that is single use (in this case a commission) will actually pay me back way less, but sometimes i enjoy taking them and sometimes i have the desire or need for something that pays more up front rather than long term. last year, we had an emergency and had to very suddenly move and so i needed to help offset some of those costs without taking up all my time. this year i want to take whatever money i make and use it to pay other artists that i like. 🤷‍♀️

most of the arguments i see online about paying artists accordingly comes down to the artist’s expenses and bills and always comes with this sort of innate defensiveness, as if we need to prove our hardships to show our worth. necessity is only part of the equation and by focusing all our attention on that we set ourself up for future hardship because we only justify the bare necessities.

i don’t need to take these commissions. in fact, that is why they are priced the way they are! because i am in a very fortunate position where i do not need to take commission work to survive and so i can be choosy with my clients. i charge what i feel is appropriate and i am sad that not everyone who wants one can afford one, but it’s not my responsibility to make myself affordable and doing so would hurt both my work and my desire to take future work.
