Adele ja Marras auttavat toisiaan, mutta Marras on Adele vanhempi ja kokeneempi, ja joukon johtaja. Marras oppii kuitenkin myös Adelelta paljon ja asetelma kääntyy kirjan aikana ympäri.

Talventaitossa ei ole yhtään keskeistä mieshahmoa, joten sitä ei tarvinne kommentoida. (Alati on muunsukupuolinen.)

Ihastumisopissa Leinikki käy läpi vaikeaa traumaa ja Jouka on monessa suhteessa yksinkertaisesti emotionaalisesti tasapainoisempi. Ei kaikessa, ja hänellä on heikot kohtansa ja sokeat pisteensä ja hän toimii välillä kyseenalaisesti, mutta Jouka on osin vahvemmassa asemassa yksinkertaisesti siksi, että voi henkisesti paremmin.

Mutta emt, musta naiset saa tarvita ja saada apua myös miehiltä, ja musta on kivaa kirjoittaa tunneälykkäitä ja monitahoisia mieshahmoja, koska etenkin romansseissa mieshahmot kirjoitetaan usein toksisiksi (vaikka ei munkaan hahmot puhtaita pulmusia ole). Mutta kolmen kirjan perusteella en vielä vetäisi kauheasti johtopäätöksiä näistä, etenkin kun yhdessä kirjoista ei edes ole about yhtään miestä. Mulle hahmojen sukupuolella ei myöskään oikeasti ole lähtökohtaisesti juuri yhtään väliä, joten jos lukija haluaa siihen keskittyä, se on sitten hänen asiansa. Mua ei kirjoittaessa sukupuolet kiinnosta, paitsi siinä mielessä, että tykkään rikkoa sulupuolinormeja tietoisesti aina välillä.

Mutta totean nyt tässä kohtaa, että olen tähän samaan kysymykseen sen eri muodoissa nyt täällä aika monta kertaa vastannut, ja tulen varmasti jatkossakin kirjoittamaan myös vastaavia dynamiikkoja, joten jos ne ärsyttää, varminta on lukea jonkun muun tarinoita. :) En tule kirjoittamaan pelkästään naisista, ja tulen jatkossakin kirjoittamaan välillä nais/mies-pareja, joilla on myös tällaista dynamiikkaa.

(Seuraavassa Merenkehrässä on oletettavasti femmeä toisensa pääparituksena jos Yön puutarhat tulee ennen Surun alkemiaa, mutta sekään ei ole ongelmaton dynamiikka, vaan etenkin aluksi aika toksinen (mutta korjaantuu tarinan edetessä). Ja tätäkään en nyt suoraan lupaa, koska kirjoittaminen on viime vuodet ollut tosi vaikeaa, enkä tiedä yhtään, mitä tapahtuu.)

The most interesting question you can ask about any character is not what do they want. it's what do they believe they deserve. because those two things are almost never the same and the gap between them is where your entire story lives. a person can want love completely and believe they don't deserve it and that belief will destroy every good thing that comes toward them in ways they won't even notice they're doing. write the gap. the gap is the character.
