Did they really say spicy foods like KETCHUP????
????????
Forever in awe of American people's ability to completely miss a joke
You drop a small piece of food on the floor, and decide to kick it under the oven/couch/whatever because you can’t be bothered to pick it up. As you’re walking away, you hear a very quiet “Thank you!” from under it.
“No problem,” I say, the words passing out of my mouth on autopilot, before my brain engages and I freeze.
I turn, and look at the fridge. It seems to be the same fridge that was here when I moved in.
I mean, I’m also kind of embarrassed. I never do that, I know that’s how you get roaches, but my back hurts so bad that getting up and down is next to impossible, much less bending over. “Um, you holding up okay down there?” I ask.
There was silence.
“I know that we’re probably the only apartment in the building that doesn’t have a bug problem. That’s, well, that’s you, right?”
Again, silence. But I know I heard it.
“Listen, I can’t really bend over right now, but if you’re down there and hungry, like, there’s half a rotisserie chicken in there that’s about to go bad. I was going to throw it away, but if you could use it-”
“Yesssss. Please.”
Well. Whatever it is, it’s well-mannered, anyway.
She’s too good at this
imagine thinking this is a flex i would kill myself if this was my life
Last summer my friend’s mom discovered hundreds of teeny tiny toad tadpoles in a puddle in her driveway. It was drying up, so she asked me about moving them to a nearby pond. I told her not to, because moving amphibians unnaturally between water bodies can spread disease.
So she filled up a watering can every morning and every evening and replenished the puddle, adding dechlorinator drops she uses for her fish tank to make sure the water was safe.
The tadpoles survived and grew up into little toads who eventually hopped out of the puddle.
I think about the tenderness and compassion of this a lot.
I've been searching unsuccessfully for a job since I started uni in September last year, with no success. I was only entitled to the minimum maintenance loan (around £3300 for 12 months). I got my last installment in April, and of course it's long gone, as I still had most of the same outgoings I did when I was working. I'm struggling to get work and as a student I'm not entitled to jobseekers allowance, so I have no income until I get another maintenance loan in September/October (if it gets approved).
I'm steadily getting more and more desperate and worried. So if anyone can spare anything, it'd mean the world. £80 would cover my phone bill, bike insurance, two of my prescriptions, some petrol and dentastix for the dog for the next month.
If you can help, my paypal link is here

The met office have issues their first ever red weather warning for extreme heat in the UK. We're in for a rough couple of weeks, which means we should all prepare not only to try to keep ourselves cool and safe, but also to help others in an emergency. Heat exhaustion and heat stroke are very probable and there's lots of information online for dealing with this. The video below is a great overview, and the SJA website and NHS choices have more information about dealing with heat related illness
I know it's not beach weather, but no doubt people in this high heat will head to the coast, so if you do, know the risks and check out both heat information on the NHS and St John Ambulance websites, and staying safe in the water and at the beach on the RNLI website
Above all, stay safe and help any vulnerable friends, family, and neighbours do the same
this is without exaggeration the funniest story ive ever read in a youtube comment
“wouldn’t you rather earn something than have it just handed to you?”
Yeah when it comes to actual awards and fancy goods, but when it comes to basic needs, basic human decency, and accomodations, those things should always be handed to people. No one should have to “earn” those things.Value people as people, not base it on how much they produce.
yeah but that creates a severe dependency that could be exploited easily, and creates a slippery slope @musical-clarity
Actually studies show that people who live in places with universal income (who are given money with no strings attached just for being citizens) do far better work than those who don’t and are more enthusiastic to do work.
This is because they still want nice things and will work for those but the part of their energy that was devoted to worrying about if they have enough money to pay the rent and bills this month is now freed up to do other things.
Some people will always be lazy and take advantage of the system, but they are always a tiny percentage and it seems ridiculous to me to punish the majority and severly hamstring their abilities just because a handful of people will simply live of basic income rather than work.
It’s been tested a couple times. In Canada, in some European countries, and the results are always the same. There are two groups of people who show a statistically significant (Greater than one half of one percent, or 1 in 200) increase in Not Working and living off the guaranteed income. Parents of Children under school age, and full time students. Among ALL other groups, employment actually INCREASED. Why? Because guaranteed minimum income means that homeless people can get at least a basic low end apartment. It’s hard if not impossible to get an above board job without a permanent fixed address. Also more people were able to have and maintain a BANK ACCOUNT. It is often hard to get a decent job without an account that can accept Direct Deposit for paychecks. Also, lost work time due to illness and injury decreased across the board. It turns out if people are getting a decent amount of money each month they can A> afford to eat better, and B> obtain decent medical attention both preventative and emergency. Crazy right? So why hasn’t it caught on? Because it doesn’t directly benefit the people in power, and it increases THEIR PERSONAL taxes, their CORPORATE TAXES, and thus decreases their PERSONAL INCOME. So, because Jeff Bezos and Alan Greenspan might fall from making 100 billion dollars a year to making 99.8 billion dollars a year, it’s a hard NO and we can all fucking die.. The End.
tl;dr
TL;DR : people work better when they are living
Maslow’s hierarchy of needs applies to society as a whole,,, you need basic necessities and security in order to do your best
Capitalist bootlickers are always like “that might create a slippery slope of dependency where people could be exploited, so we should stay on our slippery slope of starvation and homelessness where people definitely are being exploited.”
I.D.: News article, with a headline reading “I Don’t Know How To Explain To You That You Should Care About Other People” and a subtitle saying “Our disagreement is not merely political, but a fundamental divide on what it means to live in a society.” /End I.D.
