Portrait of a Girl: *is a song about the struggles Ivy faces when society doesnāt acknowledge her as a human person with feelings, but just objectifies her as a pretty girl and nothing more. the metaphors about portraits are used to back up said problems, representing the facade of the perfect girl she keeps up for the school, forever afraid that if she does something wrong or speaks for herself, sheāll be pushed back further into the lie, and so Ivy would never be able to show the true part of herself.*
The writers of Bare The Musical: yeah okay but,,, Matt is there for like,,,, five seconds. What if we turned this into a love song sung by Matt about how pretty and perfect Ivy is? Ooh and while weāre at it, why donāt we keep the metaphors about portraits to show that we completely missed the point of the fucking song??
The point of Mattās presence in POAG is also to show that he doesnāt understand her either (as Ivy sings āwould you recognize the girl lying there,ā he sings āI know thereās love lying thereā). It is essential to establish that Matt doesnāt see her either. If he does, the whole plot of the show starts to unravel.
Ivy likes Jason because he is the one guy who is genuinely nice to her and doesnāt want to just get in her pants. If Matt āunderstandsā her, then that wouldnāt be the case; he would be an option too. The difference between Matt and Jason is that Jason actually sees Ivy as a human being (complimenting her art right before the song starts) whereas Matt thinks he does, but still idealizes and objectifies her. Since he does not understand Ivy, she rejects him, and he has no place in her life. This is why Promise is especially fucked up; Matt isnāt protecting Ivy, he is inserting himself on her behalf and worsening the situation to make himself look like the hero to her by damaging her perception of Jason (once again, not understanding who she is or what she wants or needs). In doing so, he intentionally outs her as pregnant to Peter (and accidentally outs her to the rest of the class as well), showing that his false perception of Ivy is blinding him to reality.
All this is to say that it is especially upsetting to me that they ignored all this to center POAG around him at the expense of Ivyās character.
Jason is Jesus
Just realized Jason McConnell is a Christ figure (a character whose qualities and experiences mirror that of Jesus Christ). I was a bit slow to finding this but Iām Jewish so bear with me.
I found a doc with information about how to identify a Christ figure in literature and hereās all the criteria he fits
divine or royal father (his dad is established as a very powerful person)
considered āaway from homeā (boarding school)
misunderstood by many
sensitive or sympathetic to people
sees the truth that nobody else can
possesses a dual identity (closeted)
persecuted or punished for his ideas, generally connected with love or truth
represents hope to other characters
converses with the Devil or other evil force who tries to tempt the character away from his ideals (the Priest in Cross)
betrayed by those close to him
has a ācross to bearā
dies in a way associated with his ideals
dies unjustly
reborn/returns from death either physically or emotionally (Iād argue that in No Voice he emotionally returns, but it varies based on productions and interpretations)
I think I did something here but I might just be late to the party lmao

unpopular? opinion
peter and jason werenāt a ātoxic coupleā they were genuinely in love but stuck in a toxic environment where they couldnāt agree on if it was/would ever be okay to show that love
the whole point is that they didnāt get a chance to be a real couple and every toxic aspect of their relationship was a direct result of their environment
guys will be like "i know a spot" and then take u outside of a rave to tell u ur relationship has to be a secret
if you wanna find out which love victor character you are,,,,, i might have made a quiz šš
"In the silence will he stay?" Interesting to note that, from Jason's death till No voice (so from Queen Mab to Absolution), the music is almost absent from the show, with only one instrument mimicking a white sound, as opposed to the flute, guitar and drums characteristics of the previous 1h45min
So, no, Jason didn't stay in this silence, or rather, Jason's death took the music away from the show
jasonās good actions in bare a pop opera all seem to come from the inherent kindness that is intrinsic to his personality and who he is but his bad ones all come from the terror he feels of who he is and on a totally related note iām crying
love, simon and love, victor parallels part 1 (part 2)
Is Love, Victor good? Or more moneygrabby?
Itās amazing! It gave me so many emotions and addressed a lot of the less good parts of Love, Simon. Such a good show and I love all the characters so much
I donāt understand why people are saying Benji didnāt show any interest in Victor?
I know the show is from Victorās point of view, so we got a lot more of his developing and all-encompassing attraction to Benji. But Benji was clearly subconsciously gravitating towards Victor all season.

wow love that they didnāt even try to get a fat girl to play nadia, even though she has an entire solo about how sheās fat. castingās likeĀ āwhat is fat, a size 4 in a baggy sweater?āĀ
The man we callĀ āFather Flynnā, is his name actually Father Flynn?
Of course, there is the line ofĀ āI talked to Father Flynn ā¦ā in PJFA, but that could be about another person
And in the script it just says the characterās name isĀ āPriestā.Ā
IDK this has always really bothered me.
Iāve always assumed his name is not Father Flynn.
The line is referring to Notre Dame. Itās āplease find enclosed this very thick package that came for you yesterday. I talked to Father Flynn and he told me you were in, but call anyway when you open it.ā
Why would the priest at his high school know if he got into Notre Dame?
Itās stated in the next line that Jasonās father (and maybe many other people in his family) went to Notre Dame. Most likely Father Flynn is a connection they have at Notre Dame from when Jasonās other family members, his father included went there. Itās not uncommon for some wealthy families to have a college they go to and usually in those cases theyāll know people at admissions who keep them in the loop as well as give some special treatment due to donations made to the school.
Idk I always just assumed thatās what that was. Like I said it doesnāt make sense for his High School priest to know if he got into college. Colleges donāt tell random teachers that kind of info, itās usually considered private.
this is what i always thought but for the sake of convenience iāve just called him father flynn anyway lmao
This is your friendly neighborhood reminder that both Jason McConnell and Peter Simmonds tried their HARDEST to do the right thing for each other and for everyone around them. Peter stayed closeted for Jason until he couldnāt take it, Jason put Peter first until he couldnāt. They tried their hardest and their mistakes donāt mean theyāre bad people, it just means the pressure on them was so intense that they cracked. Peter had been holding this in since he was twelve, Jason probably the same, and they had been dating since they were fourteen. Thatās a long time to have nothing but each other. They tried so goddamn hard and although they ended up hurting each other the pressure was unimaginable and Iām so proud of them both for holding on so long.
So anyway Iād die for Peter and Jason and Iām still in love with Bare Barcelona
