Mabon Prep Suggestions and Activities for the Domestic Witch 🌙🍁🍂🍄🌰
I am very much a Fall person (shocker, I know). I was not made to endure the heat, I’m just not in a happy place during the Summer time. It’s a season that brings a lot of my inner demons to the surface, and emotionally drags me through Hell and back. So when it finally starts to feel like Fall, there’s always a small sence of release and renewal in it for me. Which is perfect, because Mabon is all about welcoming the Fall season, and letting go of what no longer serves you. And this year, I’m particularly excited.
So what does this witch do in preperation for the new season? (Not saying you have to prepare, it’s just something I like to do.)
Go on a Fall cleaning spree. Give those little nooks and crannies that normally don’t receive a lot of attention some extra love. Declutter your belongings, and donate what you’re no longer using to the thriftshop. Add some cleansing herbs to your soapy water while you’re at it, for an extra boost (I recommend sage, peppermint, or rosemary).
Treat yourself to some new (or gently used) Fall clothes, if you have the funds for it. Now is the time to invest in that new coat or those new boots. Subscribe to some new fashion channels for your body type, that inspire you to try out new things with your looks, and make you feel good about yourself.
Go foraging for wild berries and fruits, and make some homemade jam or jelly… learn how to pickle, ferment, and preserve. I know we can buy a lot of these products at the grocery store. But there’s so much more satisfaction in doing it yourself. And I discovered a great deal of “forgotten fruits” as a bonus. Which made me feel a lot more connected to nature’s cycles, my heritage, and the harvest. There’s an app called pl@ntnet, that allows you to identify plants/fruits/trees/flowers by taking photos of them. It’s been very helpful to me so far.
Make a cleansing spray, and clean, declutter, and rearrange your altars/sacred spaces. I know mine haven’t received a lot of love during the Summer, and frankly… they got rather dusty. You can use moon/sun water (or alcohol) as a base, sage, mint, rosemary, orange/lemon peel, a dash of Florida Water, lemon/bergamot essential oil… that would be my go-to recipe.
Renew and reinforce your protection wards. Those rosemary sprigs and cinnamon sticks have probably gotten rather old and brittle by now. Time to throw them out, and replace them with some fresh ones. Make a new protection powder, and sprinkle it by your doorstep and under your windowsills. We’re approaching a time of the year with significantly increased spiritual activity. There is no such thing as being overly prepaired.
What am I doing on Mabon?
Because Summer is such an emotionally difficult time for me, it really feels like I’m coming back to life when Fall rolls around. So for me personally, a Mabon ritual would definitely be a release and renew one. To shed all my burdens, so that I can welcome the new season with a clean slate, and allow for new things to grow. And since this is quite a personal ritual, I’m going to give you a simplified version. I highly recommend you to tweak it, and make it your own.
What do you need:
A few pieces of naturally shed tree bark. Just like the trees have shed these pieces, to release themselves from the burden that they are, so will we shed our own burdens. (Tip: look for American Sycamore trees in your neighbourhood.)
A marker.
A fire proof bowl.
Rosemary, for cleansing and protection.
Lemonbalm, for emotional healing.
Some tinder (wood shavings).
A lighter or matches.
How to do it:
Take your marker, and write on the pieces of bark everything that you would like to release. From negative self talk, to bad habits, and toxic thought patterns. Put the tinder in the bowl first, then the bark, followed by the herbs, and burn everything to ashes. Fire doesn’t only banish things, but it also cleanses and heals. Take the ashes, and scatter them to the wind. Let the wind free you of your worries.
I hope this has helped to inspire some of you. I know it can be hard sometimes to keep that enthusiasm going, when you’ve been practicing for a while, or you’re in a bad state of mind. And do let me know what your own plans for Mabon are (if you have any). I would love to read about them.
