You know those people who are cursed to always be with eyes partially closed in photographs? I hc Jon having the opposite problem after becoming the Archivist. In every photo he's in he's always caught looking directly at the camera, no matter where he is in the shot. Eyes wide open staring directly at the viewer. Seems normal when he is the focus but subtly unsettling the more photos of him you happen to see when he's part of the background or in the crowd. Especially since, after a while, your eyes seem to be pulled to find him to look directly back.
CONTENT WARNING: Body horror.
Spooky scary Shelley-tons!! Ok Michael Distortion fans, this one is for you.
Drawn in Storyboard Pro 20.1 with custom brushes from Rozlyn Waltz. The Magnus Archives is a podcast written by Jonathan Sims, Directed by Alexander J Newall, and distributed by Rusty Quill! This clip features voice acting by Jonathan Sims and Luke Booys!
Had a lot of fun figuring out how Michael moves! Now that I've drawn his grand entrance, maybe someday I'll draw the scene where he...uh...leaves.
Jonny sims put the tmp logo on his official website. I upped the contrast so we can see the whole thing!
This logo looks incredibly similar to the british civil service logo! The alchemy symbols are mercury (āæ) sulfur (š) and salt (š). The latin says āwe will not waver.ā
It also contains the symbol for the philosopherās stone, just rotated 180 degrees
I have added the bleed-through Kickstarter T-shirt on top of the full logo of the OIAR (Office for Incident Assessment and Response) because some of the parts are better visible because of its higher quality.
Addition to the Civil Service: With Millbank Prison and the panopticon in TMA and the latter's significance to the story it could be relevant that this part of the British government is also responsible for running prisons... Manchester also has a prison, which is still in service to this day, I think? Strangeways Prison (excellent name), which opened in 1868 and was also built in the panopticon design. * Furthermore about the symbols in the logo (the alchemy symbols have already been pointed out, I have them here again with some of its meaning):
The two symbols in the middle of the logo are the alchemical symbols for salt (1) (body) and mercury (2) (spirit/mind). Sulfur (3) (soul) is found surrounding the circle in the middle on all four corners. Those are the three primes in alchemy. Sulfur is the principle of combustibility, mercury the principle of fusibility and volatility and salt the principle of non-combustibility and non-volatility. Whatever this may mean for The Magnus Protocol...
Regarding the other elements I dove into heraldry because we know from the "The Final Dayā - Magnus Protocol Kickstarter stream, that they also looked into this. Thank you wikipediaĀ for publishing this guide!Ā
The symbol in two corners of the circle seems like the (4) chevron, though I think it is odd that it doesn't stretch across it's entire segment of the quarter circle. Maybe it would have just looked strange since one edge is round and the other a straight line. It is upwards pointing. The chevron represents the roof of a house. This signifies protection. It can also stand as a rank or length of service on badges used for police or military for example. The bent lines crossed by bent lines from the other directions is called (5) lozengy. I can't find anything on the lozengy pattern, but a lozenge, so a single parallelogram is a symbol of honesty, constancy, noble birth.Ā
Still haven't found anything on the (6 & 7) ālego bricksā Ā and the (8) things in between, though 7 and 8 may only be for decorative purposes. All symbols with their position in the logo:
Used this to try and clean up the logo, thanks!
devil works hard but tma fandom works harder, good on you guys for getting the rest of the symbols!
The Archive
Just a Thought if, yknow, Jon had embrace his new nature instead of being Constantly Drowned In Guilt. The Anti wet-puppyfication, if you will
real quick summary of all this:
Ā - fay & fable (company competing w/ RQ) marketing person posts an article about RQ mismanagement & exploitation (https://medium.com/@newtschott/whos-afraid-of-alex-j-newall-ae3a67f3a5e1)
- the article didnāt state that the author was a marketing person at f&f until they were called out for not stating it; it was then edited in
- they cite approximately three sources in total, mostly coming back to unverifiable anonymous RQ affiliates (ex employees, people who were offered a position, etc)
- tal, not affiliated w/ f&f says this isnāt a marketing thing, was run past two editors and multiple lawyers
- thereās some truth in the article, mostly a lot of plausible but unverifiable things, and some plain misinformation / bad faith readings [i.e; article states that "thereās a very good chance that the list on Kickstarter of stretch goal guest writers may be the totality of the people in the audio fiction indie world that have still not had an experience with Rusty Quill.ā this is provably false; many of the guest writers have RQ podcasts or have interacted with RQ before
Ā - ben meredith retweeted the article w/o comment; not sure what heās agreeing with
- malevolent podcastās official twitter postedĀ āI donāt know much but I will say that if you decide to stop listening to my show; a show I work so very hard on, because of an article that presumptively and poorly attempts to speak for me, then I think youāre hurting the thing you intend to be helping.ā https://twitter.com/MalevolentCast/status/1602441871992782849?s=20&t=Z_86aECzgsdU9OgtfoiU6g
- the creator(? correct if wrong) of The Town Whispers and Tiny Terrors tweeted:Ā āWhat do I say here? I work day and night on @TheTownWhispers & @tinyterrorspod. I personally create, fund, produce, and direct my shows. What a shame to see someone speak on behalf of what I and others have built for years at our own expense dominate the conversation. No one reached out to me about āthe articleā ahead of time, no one asked me if I consented to be spoken for, I donāt appreciate people victimizing me & weaponizing it for personal gain, & I donāt appreciate that itās being passed off as a benevolent act of courage on my behalf.ā https://twitter.com/ColeWeev/status/1602447361045065728?s=20&t=aAf1T5fen0FzXuAAllevLA
- woe.begoneās official twitter tweetedĀ āThe only thing I want to say about The Article is that I am concerned that readers will believe things about my show and my relationship to my network that have not been my experience. I think this is what others mean when they describe feeling āspoken for.āā https://twitter.com/woebegonepod/status/1602453798332538881
- the cellar letters twitter tweeted āAbout the article: I am not going to attempt to invalidate anyoneās thoughts or feelings⦠but I will say that it absolutely does not speak for me or align with my relationship and experiences with the network or anyone involved at the company.
Love you all. Go create stuff.ā (https://twitter.com/CellarLetters/status/1602457106271330304)
- an ex mod of the RQ official discord tweeted āthat article skims over the whole community/discord/mods fiasco but I can tell you their attitude toward their staff was just as horrendous as to their volunteersā (https://twitter.com/brinnanza/status/1602420893669593091?s=20&t=EbapLo6-je805j0h1aX2kw)
- annie (an RQ editor) retweeted āAnyways! Disinformation is as old as news itself. Donāt believe everything you read, on the internet or otherwise - especially if you are biased (positively OR negatively) against the speaker/subject. And if you do believe it, be careful not to assume you have the whole story.ā https://twitter.com/serhawke/status/1602375132579827713?s=20&t=Q3iAjLLwsdIqYShTKinvHw - this thread also has a useful tweet further up on how to assess the utility of a source:
āPURPOSE - what was it meant to achieve? ACCURACY - can the facts be proven or disproven? CONTENT - what does it actually tell you? LIMITATIONS - what doesnāt it tell you? why? AUTHOR - biased? DATE - was its publication date āconvenientā for any reason? firsthand or hearsay?ā
This article is six parts and thousands of words, but I hope you read it. Incredibly brave creators spoke about their experience working with Rusty Quill, and their stories kept me up for nights. In my opinion, some of the actions taken by this company were unconscionable - but I invite you to read this piece and decide for yourself.
There is no ethical consumption under capitalism, but the behavior we support will be emulated by other podcast companies. It is up to us as a community to decide what that behavior should be, and take concrete action to uphold it.
As someone who has witnessed old, established fandoms get completely erased under a wave of new content, I'd like to put this request out now as early as possible:
Can we all, please, use separate tags for "The Magnus Archives" (TMA) and "The Magnus Protocol" (TMP) both here on tumblr and over on Ao3.
There will be some overlap, of course, but searching for TMA should turn up content about Jonathan Sims, the Archivist, and the old established set of characters, while searching for TMP should turn up content about our as-of-yet unnamed new civil servant protagonists and whoever shares the show with them.
I realize that people are going to want to keep using the TMA tags for both personal organization reasons as well as visibility, but I promise you, once content for the new show starts really picking up steam it'll be easier on all of us if we have two separate tags to keep them straight.
[If we need an overarching umbrella tag, I'd suggest "The Magnus Universe" (TMU) to cover content related to the world as a whole rather than a specific show.]
The Magnus Archives 2 title:
The Magnus Protocol
The protagonists work for the British Civil Service (apparently inspired by the video game āControlā)
Alex is excited to revisit the metaphysical lore, what the audience knows, what we think we know, what we think we donāt know, and whatās actually happening. āThe info dump is doneā and now he gets to play
Jonny is excited to revisit certain characters in new and exciting ways, also āagency related occurrencesā Alex is desperately preventing Jonny from saying more.
Sam the Composer (Sam Sam the Music Man) is on the call, aka the āspooky viola manā.
Someoneās asked if the background tracks for statements will be released in an album, a question Alex has asked before to which Sam said āwhy?ā. Chat is very enthusiastic about getting these tracks (mainly for ttrpg usage) (they have yet to answer the question with a yes or no) they moved onto another question without answering
āWhich tma character is most attractive/do you have an image of the characters in your headā the characters are blurry images in Jonnyās head, but the answer is Georgie. Alex Fancasts. The hottest character for him? Jared Hopworth. Helen says Elias is hottest because heās evil, Alex argues that heās not hot because he canāt crush metal between his thighs.
Returning to the music question, re:uploading on Spotify. Sam will consider it, the Magnus theme is already up on Spotify. He has to consider the legality because of the sampling of sounds, it has to be changed enough to not get copyrighted. Sam is talking about how he made the sounds now (with Alexās vague directions)
Theres going to be 2 protagonists, new people! There will be some returning voices, and "maybe" some returning characters in some capacity. Jonny is being forced to be cryptic.
There's going to be new music for tmp (Alex made a demo track for the title theme, everyone is threatening to make Alex release it)
A bunch of people worked on the ARGs and puzzles! A team effort for Rusty Quill. They'll be releasing a wrap up of the codes and stuff. They were drastically unprepared for their fandom solving the codes so quickly, evidently (The Statement Remains discord is blowing up, according to chat)
The ridiculous, high-money, who knows if they'll get that high stretch goal for the kickstarter: Ghost hunting show (video!) starring Alex and Jonny!
Will there be more Zombies? Can Jonny be bribed to add more? Jonny is promising nothing. Maybe! Maybe they'll be there!
Does Tim wear Hawaiian shirts? Jonny refuses to canonize it, but yeah, he wears them. Alex imagines him shirtless.
How many more Michaels? Alex is threatening Jonny not to spoil, Jonny says a lot of very important characters don't even have names yet! Schrodingers Michael, according to Alex.
Scariest Fear Entity: The Corruption! Question: How did you make it sound so awful? Jonny says he looked at trypophobia pictures before writing, and also its his own fear. Alex says he broke some audio rules, such as the treble rules (basically when frequencies higher or lower than a certain level are remove). The Worm Sounds were higher pitched so that the Worms Were In Your Ear, the Vast was the exact opposite--they boosted the bass to put it closer to your ear.
Jonny gets kicked off the call (leaving for another stream).
Restarting the stream with Alasdair Stuart on the call! Is Hozier an avatar of the Buried? Alex refuses to answer because Jonny isn't present, and if he's wrong Jonny won't let him hear the end of it. Helen thinks he is.
What would Peter would have done in the fearpocalypse had he not been killed? Alasdair's personal headcanon is that he didn't die, and quantum leaped himself to Loch Ness, sets himself up in a nice house to regret everything. He has a very large umbrella made with a message (couldn't hear what he said) on top of it to divorce Jonah one last time, he puts it up every time he goes for a walk so Jonah has to look at it.
Advice for people writing horror? (not relevant to tma so I'm not gonna summarize this sorry)
What irl book do you think would end up in Leitner's library? (I zoned out a little sorry) House of Leaves (spiral), Haunting of Hill House (Lonely, according to Helen), Lanark: A Life in Four Books (Alex's suggestion), White is for Witching (Helen), Mother! (Extinction, Helen), American Gods (Chat), King in Yellow (Chat)
There was a question asked jarchivist vs jonny writerman and I honestly could not understand the answer. Alasdair says neither of them win
Helen and Alasdair are of the belief the Admiral is a large ginger cat. Alex thinks the admiral is the ugliest, mankiest cat ever, an absolutely fucked up cat.
so the magnus archives 2 official title is "the magnus protocol" (revealed by jonny sims on the rusty quill pre-kickstarter launch livestream)
jonny says that the video game "control" inspired him and alex to develop the magnus protocol
jonny also said that while the magnus archives focused more on the significance of your personal choices and their effects in wider systems and academia/science, the magnus protocol will focus more on the organizational/bureaucratic side of the magnus universe (which makes sense given that control was a major inspiration).
alex has confirmed they will be revisiting existing tma lore and metaphysics, but there will be things we don't know and things we "think we know"
jonny has confirmed that they will also be revisiting existing characters and the impact of their actions and choices (though how exactly was not specified)
there will be 2 protagonists and both of them are completely new characters
if they hit a certain (unspecified) stretch goal on their kickstarter there may be more tma bonus content
they're considering expanding the formats of storytelling they use in universe (i think this means things other than statements or tape recordings?) and the writing team has been expanded. they also mentioned the possibility of bringing on guest writers.
youāre laughing? a podcast company didnāt properly account for the drop in fan engagement they would experience after their star show ended and now are scrambling to create a reboot to make up for lost income, and youāre laughing?
THREE MORE SEASONS OF THE MAGNUS ARCHIVES HOLY SHIT IM SHAKING

Help Iām late to the party re: cryptic Rusty Quill Magnus Archives news and donāt know how to catch up!
You have come to the right place! Here I will summarize The Bullshitā¢ļø with time stamps where able. I will also update this post when new things come to light.
Letās go one day at a time!
10 October
Rusty Quill Twitter and Instagrams post UNPROMPTED, UNEXPLAINED eyes
On the same day, RQ patrons got a code in the weekly Patreon round up
12 October
RQ Twitter posts a tweet with an image of a cassette tape with the same code as had been given to the patrons: U3RhdGVtZW50IFJlbWFpbnMK
Using base64, the code comes out to āStatement Remainsā
The RQ insta also posted this image to their story:
Which, if you take the image as binary code, comes out to āAre you still listening?ā
A new code was also posted to RQ patrons, and will be added here if/when it is publicly released.
EDIT: There were strings of text added to the episode description of Goodbye for Now in the TMA feed, which when translated through Base32 and then Base64 read: "this one was an accident. sorry -_-"
Amazing, 11/10 work, RQ
(ty to @official-infinitea for the update on the pod description codes!)
EDIT: also on-going is like⦠every person associated with RQ being VERY MEAN and dropping hints that weāre all gonna lose our shit whenever whatever this is drops
13 October
Apparently the Patreon code from yesterday led people wildly off-course, because they gave another hint today to solve it. Again, going to keep the specifics of that off this post bc patreon.
Also, Fay Roberts, who played Daisy Tonner in TMA, tweeted
The QR code translates to: WHR'TS ECAHXJ TCLKHX U AC JV Y
It is yet unsolved.
The RQ Twitter and Instagram also posted
New episode:
Oh... Hello. | The Magnus Archives
I'll let you listen to that one on your own š
Code in the description is
7V?UOEdDb7B-9W`H>[n7AhG3$ATAo0@V?lrB6JQG+F/-BB6%F(@<=^@$<L\[@3B5q/0IH*G%G<0EbBM;6?$RHDfTD?+F/!?Aft`(H$CHLDdmBm+EhBM
Which translates via ascii to
"Statement Remains. Are you still listening?
Join us, Thirtieth October, lets talk about it."
4pm BST tweet:
Using a polybus code box, the numbers translate to:
The Magnus Archives Two
THATāS RIGHT BITCHES WE GETTIN MORE TMA
